Cheap and Cheerful Sauvignon Blanc
2008-06-03 12:48:00
The time of year has come where humidity has descended on the District and we have retreated into the air conditioning. When we do venture out, it's rarely without a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Thus I made one of my trips to Total Wine to scoop up a couple cases of cheap Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa. One of those bottles (all of which came in under $9 a bottle) was a 2007 Arakena Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. It clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume and had a plastic closure. On the nose I found lemon grass, grass, citrus, and lychee. I swear I almost thought I found the cat pee that you see in some Sancerre, but it disappeared so quickly that I think perhaps I imagined it. In the mouth I got peach, lemon, and grass. The wine was tart and a little bitter on the back of the palate. The wine was tasty, but not as refreshing as others I've had.

It looks like summer is here to stay. We skipped straight from cold rainy days in the 30s-50s to sunny and 80...which is lovely, but sadly, won't last long and is just a tease before the 90+ full humidity days settle in perhaps 3 weeks from now.The wine for the evening was a 2007 Brutocao Sauvignon Blanc from Feliz Vineyard. We picked it up on our most recent Sonoma trip at the winery. It had a plastic cork closure, clocked in at 13.7% alcohol by volume and cost around $14 (last year's vintage price). On the nose I found lemon, melon, honeydew, pear, and a slightly floral aroma. In the mouth the flavors were citrus, lemon, and pear. I really wish the melon had carried through to the palate. The wine was crisp, tart, and quite acidic. Definitely a refreshing bottle of wine and certainly an easy one to drink on a hot spring/summer night.I served the wine with baked stuffed scrod, rice pilaf, and corn on the cob. It worked really well with the meal since the stuffing in the scr...
Sauvignon Blanc Now With Yeast
2008-04-16 13:58:00
The wine for the night was a 2006 Quivira Sauvignon Blanc Complete. I believe they call it complete because it was left on it's native yeast lees for 7 months. Quivira is a Biodynamic certified winery, as of a couple of years ago, and I believe all of their wines are now Biodynamic. The wine had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.2% alcohol by volume (a little high for a Sauvignon Blanc), and arrived in a club shipment. I don't know what it cost because the mailing didn't break it down and I haven't seen the bottle available on the website. I would really appreciate it if the wineries would include a breakdown of the cost of each bottle in the shipment (especially for reordering purposes). I know I've ranted about this before, but is it that hard to shove in a card that says: Sauvignon Blanc, $xx.xx?Anywho, on the nose of the wine I found lemon, pineapple, cream, slight cedar with a bit of oak, and star fruit. In the mouth the wine was full of tropical fruit, lemon, star ...

Finally, it seems, winter has loosened its grip on us. Or, to be more accurate, we’ve finally been treated to something resembling springtime weather: Yes, this past week, we experienced not one but two sunny, warm days. And, in fact, as yesterday was the first truly springlike day of the year so far, I marked ...
Tin Roof Cellars 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon California

Not as complex as its cousin, the Syrah-Cabernet Sauvignon blend and not as good either. You might want to try that one first. It?s a wine better suited for dinner than perhaps drinking on its own. read more

Good Cheap Cabernet Sauvignon - 27 Reviewed
2008-03-04 00:00:00
It seems as though I've been reviewing Cabernet Sauvignon for ages.  But to tell the truth, I really don't mind.  Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my favorite varietals.  It's considered the King of wines for a reason.  Strong-bodied and elegant with complexity and intensity.  Who could not love Cabernet? All together, ...
Alice White Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-27 00:00:00
G'day!  Today's wine takes us down under to South Eastern Australia as we check out the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Alice White.  We're also getting down under $7 in price, which is always tricky.  Now and then I'll find an incredible bottle of wine for about $5, but that doesn't ...
Carmen Cabernet Sauvignon

Surprise, surprise... I'm off to Chile again to try another Cabernet Sauvignon.  This one from the Maipo Valley region in Central Chile, just south of Santiago.  The Maipo Valley appellation is rather small in size but well regarded as a wine growing region, particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon.  Due to its ...
McManis Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-25 00:00:00
If you're a regular reader you may recall my review of McManis Petite Sirah a couple months ago.  I was so thrilled with it that I had to try another varietal from them and I wasn't disappointed. Since I already gave a little background on McManis in my previous post, I'll ...
2004 MADDALENA CABERNET SAUVIGNON
2008-02-19 01:57:00
There's only been one other time that I've rated two different varietals from the same winery as high as my last two ratings. As you may recall from my last post, if you didn't read it please look below, #1 and I absolutely loved the Sauvignon Blanc from Maddalena Vineyards. Not expecting near as much out of the 2004 Maddalena Cabernet Sauvignon, we opened this and let it breathe for thirty minutes or so. I poured a small tasting amount into my glass and swirled for a few seconds. Not the dark, ruby red you see in some Cabernets but more of a medium red color. As I took a nice, full amount of aroma into my nostrils, I was greeted with vanilla, plum and spices. On the palate I picked up raspberry, spiced cherries, a little bit of caramel and maybe just a little oak. Tannins were almost non-existent and this wine had a silky finish that made me want more. Lots more! Having enjoyed this bottle as much as their Sauvignon, I had to find out more. These grapes are sourced from the Cass...

Ramey 2005 Larkmead Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-16 03:40:00
The Ramey Jericho Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been a favorite of mine for years, and for Valentine's dinner it was time to try the Larkmead Vineyard. The Ramey 2005 Larkmead Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petite Verdot, and 1% Malbec. It has a beautiful dark red/purple garnet color in the glass. The nose shows dark fruit and berries, spice, oak, and toasted brioche. On the palate cherry, plum, black currant, and oak, with earthy mushrooms and elegant fruit on the finish. The tannins are well integrated, but still has that tart edge that you would expect for its youth. We really enjoyed this fruity, earthy cab with good spice and oak, showing of its elegant side on the finish. Jericho Canyon Vineyard is still a noch up for me but this one was truly great as well. For a few less dollars I would say they both match their quality with price point. I paired this wine with a Stilton topped filet mignon, served with a red wine r...
Veramonte Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2005
2008-02-12 00:00:00
Yet again a Chilean Cabernet found its way home with me.  I'm tempted to do an overview of all the Chilean Cabs I tried... and I may yet do that. This one is from Veramonte.  You may recall that Veramonte Chardonnay was one of my top picks when I did a ...
Big Dark Cabernet Sauvignon
2008-02-11 12:55:00
Even though this bottle of wine clocked in at 14.1% alcohol (which in my opinion, for a CA Cabernet Sauvignon is actually low) it was still a BIG wine. Kind of sad when I feel that 14.1% alcohol is low, but given that I have seen over 16% alcohol for some bottles, I would gather my perspective is a bit skewed, but that is a discussion for another day.The wine in question was a 2004 Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander Valley. It had a real cork closure and was purchased by my dad, so I don't know what he paid, but it looks to be available online for about $20. A word of caution, this wine needs more time in the bottle or a good decanting before you drink it.On the nose of the wine I found black cherry, blackberry, leather, and plums. In the mouth there were cherries and dark berries. The wine was tannic and the mouth didn't open up while I was drinking it, and I really only got the one glass since 6 of us were sharing the bottle!

2006 MADDALENA SAUVIGNON BLANC from SAN ANTONIO WINERY
2008-02-07 04:21:00
"That wine you got is great!", were the exact words #1 greeted me with tonight as I walked into the house from a hard days work. Or at least a days work! With that kind of endorsement behind it I couldn't wait to try it myself. From the San Antonio Winery located where? You guessed it, Los Angeles, California. Don't let the name of the winery, or its location in Los Angeles, California, dissuade you from trying their wines. If the rest of their offerings are as good as this one, I can't wait to get my hands on more. This 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, from their Maddalena Vineyards, is made of grapes sourced from the Steinbeck Vineyard in Paso Robles. On the nose we got loads of clean, fresh citrus and a touch of "grassiness" as the vineyard puts it. I think that's a good way to sum up the clean, refreshing nose on this wine. On the palate more of the "non-sour" citrus as I like to refer to it. No grapefruit here, just lots of melon, green apple, maybe some kiwi? A nice, semi-dry ...

Sauvignon Blanc Again!
2008-02-05 12:48:00
So there you have it. I drink what I want, when I want, regardless of the weather :) We drank quite a bit of Sauvignon Blanc over the last month or so, and particularly over the holiday season. The particular bottle for this night was a Nederburg 2005 Sauvignon Blanc from the Westeer Cape of South Africa. The wine clocked in at 13% alcohol by volume and cost me $11.95 at MV Wine and Spirit. On the nose I found kiwi, gooseberries, tropical fruit, and flowers. I really liked the nose on this wine. In the mouth the wine showed gooseberry, citrus-particularly lemon and lime, and a hint of tropical fruit. The wine was crisp overall, and tart, but not mouth-puckering like some New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, and softer than some of the bottles I've been drinking from Chile. I thought this bottle was a good value and one I wouldn't hesitate to pick up again.
Red Diamond Cabernet Sauvignon

Babich Sauvignon Blanc
2008-02-03 17:08:00
I picked up this bottle of 2006 Babich Sauvignon from Marlborough, New Zealand at MV Wine and Spirit in Madison, CT for $8.95. It had a screw cap closure and clocked in at 13.5% alcohol. On the nose I found gooseberries, citrus, and tropical fruit. The wine smelled crisp. In the mouth the wine was dry, crisp, and acidic. It showed gooseberries and citrus. The profile was typical for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but it didn't seem right. The flavors were forced and it tasted processed.
Cousiño Macul Cabernet Sauvignon

My exploration of inexpensive cabernet sauvignon has given me an affinity for Chilean wine.  I've found a number of good, affordable bottles of cabernet from Chile, and this review reveals yet another example. Amador Foothill Winery 2005 Shenandoah Valley Sauvignon Blanc
2008-01-10 05:15:00
Another half bottle from my local grocery store that I had to try... The 375 ml bottles are convenient and perfect when you just want a glass of wine and don't want to pop open a whole, 750 ml, bottle. The Amador Foothill Winery 2005 Shenandoah Valley Sauvignon Blanc is made from 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. It has a golden, light, straw color in the glass, and the nose shows prominently apple, but also citrus and green pear. The wine has a round mouth feel with apple, citrus, slight spice, and touch of minerals. The finish is long and carries good acidity. The very round mouth feel made this wine feel slightly to rich for my preference, considering it is a Sauvignon Blanc. I prefer a more lighter and crisper style. However if this is not the case for you I would deem this to be a good wine at a great value, available at Wine-Searcher.com from $9.60.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

SAUVIGNON BLANC
2007-12-19 18:18:00
Robert Craig 2002 Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-18 05:45:00
I went over to my neighbors last night to give them some homemade Christmas treats and I got a treat right back in form of a glass of Robert Craig 2002 Mt. Veeder Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.I have had the Robert Craig Affinity (their Bordeaux blend) at several occasions before and always enjoyed it, but this wine was definitely a notch up.The color in the glass is a deep red garnet color. Big ripe berries, black cherry and black currant meets you at the nose with oak and vanilla notes. The palate is equally lush with dark berries, black currant, and a long finish with violet candy, black liquorice notes, and supple, well integrated tannins with matching acidity. This was a really good glass of wine and as soon as I finished my glass I wished I had a bottle waiting at home. The quality of the wine very much matches the price tag; available from $60 at Wine-Searcher.com. I would happily spend my money on this wine any day.Vote for my blog here and help me reach top 10 on The Blog Top!

Valhalla Cellars 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-14 03:14:00
I could not resist picking up a bottle of Valhalla Cellars 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon when I saw it on the shelf in the local grocery store. Being from Sweden with our heritage of Norse Gods and Valhalla I just had to try this wine that I had never heard of before. I just loved the label with the viking ship!Valhalla Cellars was founded in 2001 by Todd Martin and Madeleine Beeler Warner, both of Scandinavian decent. Therefore the name of their label. They are small producers that buy grapes from top vineyards in areas that produce the best quality grapes for the wine they intend to produce. This wine was fermented in open top fermenters with the cap punched down 3 times daily. It was then aged for 21 months in 60% new and 40% two year old French Oak. Only 70 cases produced. The wine has a very dark dense ruby color in the glass with slight cloudiness. Red cherry, dark red currant, liquorice and vanilla meets you on the nose. It is relatively smooth on the palate with red frui...

Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-07 00:00:00
Before reviewing the Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon, I’d never heard about the Wrattonbully wine region. So before opening the bottle did a little research and I found that the relatively unknown Wrattonbully wine region is located in South Australian between the Padthaway and Coonawarra wine regions. Apparently according to Wine Australia, there is very little variation in the wines across the three regions. The Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon is a full bodied wine with distinct berry and blackcurrant notes and oak flavour. The grapes are nurtured by renowned Coonawarra district viticulturist, Greg Koch and made by ex-Wynns Coonawarra/Southcorp legend, Rob Moody. Greg and Rob first became involved in the production of Picarus with the highly acclaimed 2005 wines. Picarus recommend that the 2006 Picarus Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon is ready to drink now, but will be in its prime in 5-7 years. The Picarus brand is Winetrust Estate’s premium wi...
Vino Volo and Caymus Vineyards 2005 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-06 02:39:00
Going to Las Vegas last weekend our flight out of Sacramento was delayed for 4 hours, which gave us plenty of time to kill in the airport's wine bar, Vino Volo. Vino Volo is a chain of airport wine bars with five current locations; Seattle, Sacramento, Washington DC, Baltimore and New York, and with plans to expand and open many more locations in the upcoming year.Having the option to visit Vino Volo made me very excited as airport food and drinks, in general, gives me the shivers... Vino Volo adds a touch of sophistication with good quality wine by flight, glass or bottle. Small plates are also served. We tried the cheese plate, chicken panini and the New York skewers with mashed potatoes and peas. All a step above all other airport food I have ever had. I started of with the Pinot Noir wine flight featuring a California pinot from the Molnar Family 2005 Poseidon's Vineyard, from France the Louis Latour 2002 VOLNAY, and from New Zealand the Nevis Bluff 2003 Pinot Noir. A nice fli...
