The Problem With Saving
2009-09-21 10:14:00
As many taxi drivers will tell you, the problem with the economy is we got ourselves into too much debt. - Too much personal debt, too much corporate debt and too much government debt.So since debt is such an intrinsic part of the current crisis, it is perhaps counter intuitive to explain why debt is not always bad and a rise in savings may create problems as well as benefits.Source: B of E quarterly report 2009 (web link)As this graph shows, saving ratios fell since 1995. Even adjusted for inflation, the saving ratio fell to record levels in 2008. The graph also shows the decline in personal wealth - mostly linked to falling house prices and to a lesser extent falling stock markets. However, the factors that caused a fall in the savings ratio have been reversed and the savings ratio is likely to rise sharply over the next few months / years. These factors include:Greater uncertainty over unemployment. Fear of unemployment encourages people to save as a precautionary measureLower asse...

I got these tips from Quicken and thought I should share these with you.If you?re planning on spending some of your well-deserved vacation time around the house this summer, check out these five simple ways to make the most of your days off. Inexpensive projects like these can add a whole lot of value and efficiency to your most important asset ? your home. Give Your Plugs A Tug. Here?s something you probably didn?t know: Plugged in toasters, coffee-makers, TVs and other electronic devices in your home actually use a small amount of electricity even when they?re not in use! By unplugging them when you?re not using these devices, you can save electricity and lower your utility bills.Go With The Right Light. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are an easy way to make your home more environmentally (and economically) friendly. Although they?re a bit pricier up front, CFL bulbs last a lot longer than traditional bulbs and can save you about $30 each in energy over their lifetime.No...
Should Interest on Tax Saving Term Deposit Be Shown on Receipt or Accrual B
2009-07-26 11:01:00
I am a salaried employee. I have made a 5 year tax-saving FD for Rs.30000 and a 3 year FD for Rs.10000 in the financial year 2008-09. I am not any income other than salary and interest. I have following two questions: 1) In respect of FD of 3 years, can I pay tax on interest income in the 3rd year (i.e. cash basis) instead of paying it every year on interest accrued ? 2) In respect of tax-saving FD of 5 yrs, can it be taxed like NSC i.e. interest earned be treated as being reinvested and eligible as deduction u/s 80C ? If not, can this also be taxed on cash basis in the year of receipt of interest income? Please help...Sumit Kumar The income of interest can be shown on the basis of cash ( receipt  ) or mercantile i.e due basis. But once you selected a particular system of accounting , you can not change . Therefore, it is perfectly alright if for you to pay the tax on the interest on FD for 3 years on maturity only. But if you follow that rule, you can not choose ...

By: Aleks Chan Summer television is all about the girl. Correction: all about the cable girls. Yes, cable has found itself a reliable refuge for film actresses to find work that is ostensibly of the caliber they are used to – thus Holly Hunter as a spry, hedonistic Oklahoma City detective, Kyra Sedgwick as a master interrogator, and Mary-Louise Parker as a suburban pot dealing widow. This month Edie Falco – whose film career is outsized by the grandeur of her work on THE SOPRANOS – and Jada Pinkett Smith – wife of Will and of The Matrix trilogy – join the throes as nurses predisposed to be snappy and impassioned to help their patients. Our attention is first turned to simply suthun’ Kyra Sedgwick on THE CLOSER (returns tonight at 9 pm est on TNT), where she plays “Depewty Cheef Brendalee Johnson,” of the LAPD. If hadn’t already been implied, her character is from the south, which somehow demands such a drawl that half of what she says can hardly be taken seriously....

Who is Saving Who From the Pitchforks?
2009-04-10 19:54:00
My new Pajamas Media  article is up over there.  Here’s a taste:   But imagine what would have happened  if one or more of the bankers in that meeting with Mr. Obama had had the courage to stand up and remind him of of the facts: “No, Mr. President. The only thing between the Democrats and the pitchforks is us, the bankers, and that’s the way it always has been. You Democrats used us to buy votes with home loans, requiring us to lend money to people who could not pay it back. You left us holding the bag, Mr. President — you and the rest of the Democrats then in Congress. And you need our cooperation to save your political hide from the people with the pitchforks.” Go and read… and lend your voice in the comments. Ok, I'll Try Smarty Pig

I'm very fond of ING. It will remain my primary savings account. Its very easy to use and the savings options are flexible. Historically the rate has been very competitive. But as HS from Our Debt Blog points out, there are other options. Its been a while since I shopped around for good interest rates - like I said I'm happy with ING. So thanks, HS, for pointing out a few good options:ING has always been among the lower rates, try they still offer offers 3.25% APY and has a checking account with 5.25% apy on the first 25,000.I have heard good things about Smarty Pig from the blogosphere, so I decided to read up. Its a very unique banking concept. Its all about saving for specific goals. You tell them your goal and timeline. They suggest a monthly savings contribution. You can accept that or adjust to get started. They have all kinds of options for how to redeem your savings and interest. You can get a debit card, ...

Little Motivation Games
2009-02-24 13:02:00
While getting out of debt I liked to play little motivation games. Well maybe not games in the classical sense, but I created habits that gave me a little boost when I made progress. Like updating my debt reduction spreadsheets or sidebar charts. Like being extra careful to spend wisely when a credit card is almost paid in full just so that I could say it was done. Or similarly to reach the next $1000 mark or 10% mark. Little things like that that made represented some kind of mental milestone for me.What do I do now that I'm all paid up on the cards? I have to admit that I started slipping a little this month. I made several impulse purchases "because my credit cards are paid off, I deserve it".Ok sure, a small spending spree is forgivable, but I don't want to lose my good habits. I decided to stick with the monthly challenge just changing the title to savings snowflake challenge. I still have a side bar for emergency funds. I still update my Networth IQ. But somehow t...

Saving energy: Plays on a new New Deal

"President Obama has stated that he’s been studying Roosevelt’s first 100 days and the way out of the current economic mess will look a lot like the New Deal," says David Fessler ( advisory panelist for The Oxford Club ( explains, "I think we will now see President Obama get the ball rolling on his version of the New Deal, focused on energy and infrastructure." Here, he looks at stocks poised to benefit."Saving energy will be one of his first initiatives. It’s what will give us the quickest bang for our buck."Better insulation in homes, programmable thermostats, fluorescent bulbs, more fuel-efficient cars, energy management systems for use in larger-scale commercial buildings and beefed-up public transportation are just a few of the ways to save energy."The government will likely offer attractive tax incentives to rally support.
