Oy Vey! My Son is Gay!!Evgeny Afineevsky (USA, 2009, 91 min.) Shirley Hirsch wants what every Jewish mother wants: her son, Nelson, to settle down with a nice, Jewish girl. Over and over, Shirley (My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Lainie Kazan) invites a new potential wife to Shabbat dinner. Tired of uncomfortable meals, Nelson informs his mother and his father that the matchmaking can stop, as he's already serious about someone. But when he shows up at a family wedding with his rainbow yarmulke-wearing boyfriend instead of a woman, all hell breaks loose. With an all-star cast that includes Bruce Vilanch and Vincent Pastore from The Sopranos, Oy Vey! explores the boundaries of unconditional family love.   Check the...

Beyond the Down Low Being African American and gay has very often been diminished to the overused cliché of "being on the down low."  But from the rich history of homosexual contributions during the Harlem Renaissance to the modern fear of being outed within close-knit organizations such as the black Greek system, this shorts program presents different facets of a culture within a culture. Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson takes viewers on an exhilarating journey through love, hate, and understanding in rural America. All in a matter of days, two people--Paula and Diff--come into his life and turn it inside out. Paula, a striking photographer, is running from a violent ex-husband who killed her female lover. Diff, a street guitarist who saves Henry from an assault, is sexy and all-out crazy...which, somehow, makes him even sexier. As Henry's relationship with Paula progresses, his homoerotic friendship with Diff becomes increasingly risky and propels the three into a dark, sultry triangle of lies and intrigue. Training RulesDee Mosbacher & Fawn Yacker (USA, 2009, 61 min.) Long considered one of the last bastions of homophobia and discrimination against gays and lesbians, collegiate sports has maintained its own quiet, don't-ask-don't-tell policy. For decades, being out was either not an option, or was frowned upon as damaging to the team dynamic. Pennsylvania State University head women's basketball coach, Rene Portland, enforced strict policies of conduct under the guise that such rules made for great players: no drinking, no drugs...and no lesbians. Through fear and intimidation, Portland systematically wrecked the careers of talented female basketball players, with the victims left powerless to fight back...until now. Also showing, Claiming the Title: Gay Olympics on Trial (Jonathan Joiner & Robert H....

Reel Skin These very different documentaries all dig into the euphorically transformative properties of skin and the way you adorn it--be it with animal hides, the sweetly painful vibrancy of ink, or even changing your gender representation to be comfortable in your own body. In XXWHY (Manjula Bharati, India, 2008), an FTM from India navigates life in a world where it seems there's no one else--publicly--like him. A gay man with full-body flower tattoos plans on preserving his skin through human taxidermy in Skin (Rhys Graham, Australia, 2008). And The Rise of Leathermen (Kim Munro, Australia, 2008) looks at the elaborate leather daddy subculture. Total: 85 min. Flirting with Danger Danger lurks as the male characters in this shorts...

Faithfully re-producing the genre with a modern, tongue-in-cheek twist, expect all the hallmarks of a classic prison movie complete with a wrongly accused heroine, hard boiled dames, diabolical alliances, forbidden love, cat-fighting cuties, a sadistic warden, and corrupt prison guards. Starring Mink Stole and Karen Black. Boy Crazy This program features some of the festival's best shorts about boys, boys, and more boys! Goodwood Revival 2009 event schedule
2009-09-23 18:48:00
The Goodwood Revival ? which takes place in just 10 days time, from 18-20 September, will be a weekend of celebration, as it marks two important 50th anniversaries. It?s half a century since Goodwood staged arguably its single most famous race, the 1959 Tourist Trophy, in which Aston Martin won the World Sportscar Championship; and it?s also 50 years since the launch of probably the UK?s most iconic passenger car, the Mini. Both anniversaries will be marked in unique Goodwood Revival style. The Revival is set to build on its record-breaking success last year, offering visitors of all ages a chance to revel in the romance and glamour of motor racing as it used to be. It is the only sporting event in the world set entirely to a period theme and, every year, spectators and competitors take a magical step back in time by getting into the effervescent Goodwood spirit. The majority of visitors dress in appropriate clothing from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, considering it all part of t...

Northwestern schedule designed for NCAA berth
2009-09-15 02:56:00
Northwestern announced its 2009-10 mens basketball schedule on Monday. It's a schedule designed to get the Wildcats into the NCAA Tournament. There is great potential here for the victories needed to get Northwestern to the Big Dance. There are 13 non-conference games on the schedule. There is one game that - against Butler at Welsh-Ryan Arena - that is likely a loss, but all of the other games should be close or solid victories for the Wildcats. Games against Notre Dame and Stanford give Northwestern chances for victories against "name" opponents. (A victory against the Bulldogs would be icing on the cake.) A win at N.C. State would give the Wildcats a decent road victory.Northern Illinois, Tennessee State, Liberty, North Carolina...

Are Your Priorities Aligned With Your Schedule?

Sometimes we can get so caught up in whirlpool of day to day living that we lose sight of those things that matter to us, the most. (If you naturally start nodding to that sentence, keep reading!) In his book, First Things First Steven Covey describes a lecture he attended on the topic of time. The lecturer took a large glass jar and set it down on a table with some small rocks beside it. He placed the rocks in the jar and asked the audience whether they thought the jar was full. Everybody laughed and replied that yes, it was full. Then the lecturer reached under the table and pulled out a container of gravel. He poured in the gravel and shook the jar so that the gravel filled the spaces that had been left by the rocks. Again he asked the audience if the jar was full. By this time they had cottoned on, and replied no. ?Good? he replied. And he reached under the table and repeated the process, only thing time with sand, which went into the spaces left by the rocks and the gravel. ...

MCA Stage Series: videos and fall schedule
2009-09-03 22:06:00
Text by Monica LaBelle Videos captured and embedded by Kathryn Born The Museum of Contemporary Art unveiled its upcoming stage season Wednesday, presenting a mélange of performances from theater to dance to film. Those expecting much programming of the straight-up performance art variety might be disappointed. But fear not! The programming of the season is still young, and Director of Performance Programs Peter Taub acknowledged that, as in previous seasons, additional artists will be scheduled throughout the season.  MCA administrators emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of the upcoming season as part...
Need To Stay Right On Schedule
2009-08-30 20:06:00
You can't help but look at the schedule right now and hope the Cubs find a way to get back into things. They have played well all season against sub-.500 teams and have to continue that. The ten-game trip in September certainly catches your eye as the team goes to St. Louis right off the bat, then Milwaukee is always fired up to play the Cubs and the Giants are in the wild card mix. There are some head-to-head battles coming up to watch as well. We need games to fall the right way as teams above the Cubs play each other, mostly splits to cancel each other out while the Cubs hopefully keep winning. That would be the formula to get...

DePaul's non-challenging non-conference schedule
2009-08-11 20:42:00
The schedule will make Allstate Arena a happy home for DePaul this season. When you have a young college basketball team you can take one of two paths in your non-conference scheduling. You can either 1) Try to gain confidence (and victories) by playing an easy schedule or 2) Play a difficult schedule and prepare yourself for a rigorous conference season. If you play in the Big East you probably want to do the latter, of course DePaul - as their recently released schedule shows - has picked the former. The Blue Demons will probably play three teams that were ranked in the Top 85 in the Pomeroy Ratings last season. Those games against Northern Iowa (in the Paradise Jam Tournament), Vanderbilt...

UIC sets up challenging non-conference schedule
2009-07-10 05:57:00
UIC released nine non-conference contests on Wednesday. The games are a nice mix of power conference and mid-major schools and a good balance of home and away contests. Even though the schedule might look pretty easy, there are certainly some games that could sneak up on the Flames. Also, if opponents are paying attention, UIC might be able to get wins against members of the Pac-10, Big East and Big Ten.The schedule is very light on travel. All of the games will take place in Illinois, Ohio or Wisconsin. The big "get" is Oregon State. The Beavers will be traveling to Chicago to take on the Flames at the UIC Pavilion.Jimmy Collins (left) and the Flames will have some work to...

'30 Rock' gets late start on NBC's fall premeire schedule
2009-06-26 03:58:00
It's Jay Leno overload on NBC this fall. I guess I know what network I won't be watching during the 9 p.m. hour. Having Leno on five nights a week means NBC has fewer shows to work with, so the big highlight for me here is that "30 Rock" returns, but later than the rest of the show. Liz Lemon and the gang won't be back until Oct. 15....
Lolla 'aftershow' schedule
2009-06-24 00:42:00
Heads up! Lolla released its official "afterparty" schedule today, listing where some of its best bands are playing in Chicago post-festival--and in some cases before Lollapalooza even kicks off. Here's a peek at a few: Beastie Boys (Aug. 6, Congress Theater), The Decemberists (Aug. 6, Metro), TV on the Radio (Aug. 7, Double Door), Band of Horses (Aug. 7, House of Blues), Fleet Foxes (Aug. 8, Metro), Deerhunter (Aug. 9, Logan Square Auditorium). It's one heck of a way to see your fave Lolla bands more intimately and a sweet alternative to sweating it out in Grant Park's blazing sun. Tickets for most shows go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday; Beastie Boys tix are on sale to the public...
Schedule Strangeness / Stat Of The Day
2009-06-22 18:07:00
One of the real beautiful things about baseball is the millions of random occurrences that take place over the course of a season. These are things that can't be "predicted" (regardless of what the stat-geeks at places like Baseball Prospectus will say)...things like injuries, slumps, bizarre circumstances, odd plays, bad weather (something the Sox know a lot about this year!) and the schedule.Take a look at this oddity from the White Sox 2009 home portion of it.* On April 24th the Blue Jays came to Chicago for their only appearance of the season. It was a three game series...the Blue Jays were in first place in their division at that time.* On April 27th the Mariners came to Chicago for their...
Pitchfork update: Schedule announced, Sunday sold out
2009-06-19 18:14:00
With the Pitchfork Music Festival only a month away, we're finally nearing the end of the line as far as news goes. The bands are set. The schedule is now set. And Sunday tickets are sold out (along with 2-day and 3-day passes), leaving only individual tickets for Friday and Saturday available. I gotta go with Saturday as the better bet; it may not have veteran acts like The Jesus Lizard, but it's got a full day of solid bands, from Cymbals Eat Guitars to Yeasayer to The National.Do you have Pitchfork tickets yet? What day do you think has the best lineup?...

The CW Unveils Their Fall 2009 Schedule
2009-05-21 15:04:00
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman… moving to Friday! Which pretty much sums up the big shocker from this morning’s just announced CW Fall sked. SMALLVILLE will air what will likely be its ninth and final season on Friday night, followed by a repeat of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL. Turns out that spending money on actual programming is the CW’s kryptonite equivalent. With PRIVILEGED getting the ax, alongside THE GAME, EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS, potential pilots BODY POLITIC and LILY (The GOSSIP GIRL spinoff) and their entire Sunday night lineup. Also joining the CW this fall is the network’s not-so-subtle-attempt to jump on the Vampire bandwagon with their TWILIGHT-inspired VAMPIRE DIARIES starring DEGRASSI alum Nina Dobrev, their Ashton Kutcher produced Mischa Barton AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL companion THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE and the much-buzzed about re-boot of MELROSE PLACE, which will air following their equally hyped uber-disappoi...

CBS, the network that has yet to meet a procedural it couldn’t turn into a ratings smash continued to play to their strength this morning by announcing the addition of three new ones to their 2009 Fall schedule. Joining THE MENTALIST (which is moving to Thursday at 10PM), CRIMINAL MINDS, COLD CASE and their 37 CSI spin-offs is the NCIS spinoff titled LOS ANGELES, the Juliana Margulies legal drama THE GOOD WIFE and THREE RIVERS — a medical drama starring some guy [Alex O'Loughlin] who fans may remember from that Vampire show MOON-something-or-other (Now, will you stop emailing us to Save MOONLIGHT!?) On the comedy front comes the much buzzed about Jenna Elfman laugher ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE and a shuffling of the deck chairs on Monday night with HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER moving to 8PM and THE BIG BANG THEORY being awarded CBS’ most coveted time-slot, the big 9:30PM slot following TWO AND A HALF MEN. No news is good news.
