Schizo-Affective
2009-09-06 13:42:00
Megan Fox is a gorgeous, rich Hollywood superstar. If she really does have schizo-affective disorder, a mild form of schizophrenia which is closely related to bipolar disorder, she can easily afford the psychiatrist and highly effective drug cures which are available these days. She's been on a bit of a ramble lately, and it's hurting her mercurial career. If she's really sick, I urge her to get help as soon as possible. If she's not, she should grow up; mental illness is not a joking issue. It can be a debilitating 24-7 agony caused by bad brain chemicals, and it has nothing to do with weak character, morals, criminality or bad attitude. Not to say however that are some really bitchy people out there who suffer from no obvious mental illness who display all those characteristics.Newer drugs like Geodon and Abilify have totally revolutionized the treatment of psychotic disorders. Unlike drugs like Risperdal and Zyprexia, there is no weight gain or diabetes associated with Geodon ...
Hillary's Sexual Politics
2008-05-19 16:19:00
The New York Times slides a mirror under Hillary's pants leg. She seemed uncertain how to reconcile her sex with her political persona. Though she projected an aura of authority, said Robert Shrum, a Democratic consultant unaffiliated with any candidate, she variously cast herself as a victim of male domination, a warm girlfriend type and, at the end, an indefatigable warrior. She even made contradictory statements about whether sex should be a factor in the race.
Banal Sex

NYP Adam Buckman "Sleazy Does It": "Swingtown." That's the name of a new series coming to CBS June 5 (Thursdays at 10 p.m.) that has already generated advance "buzz" (I hate that word) for its depiction of sexuality (including partial nudity, wife-swapping and sex with multiple partners) and casual drug use (pot, Quaaludes, cocaine) in 1976 suburbia. I watched the premiere episode on a DVD provided by CBS and came away thinking this has to be the sleaziest scripted show the network has ever come up with. It purports to be an examination of "the ever-shifting 'swing' of the pendulum that reflected the change in our country's collective value system - morally, politically, socially," according to a form letter to critics signed by executive producers Mike Kelley and Alan Poul. It seems, however, like an excuse for CBS to show some skin and shatter some taboos. It plays like old-school porn, with its male characters done up with mustaches and long hair in the manner of faded hairst...

Weighs Anatomy
2008-02-12 14:42:00
The FCC claims buttocks are a "sexual or excretory organ." The ABC affiliates faced with a huge fine for running that "NYPD Blue" shower scene flashing a lady's buttocks counter: [It] was a ?simple depiction of nonsexual nudity,? and that mere nudity is not indecent either as a matter of law or as a matter of community standards. B&COkay, let's go to the medical books. The (still) gold standard: "Gray's Anatomy" written in the 1800s. Nowhere are the buttocks portrayed as a "sexual or excretory organ." The buttocks cover muscles. The sphincter isn't an "organ." Let's carry the FCC's bizarre logic to absurd conclusions, shall we? If the buttocks are deemed a "sexual organ" then it stands to reason that one's mouth could be catagorized similarly. Do we ban Tee Vee from showing - gasp! - uncovered mouths? To view the "NYPD Blue" shower scene click on NYPD Blue below.

Shoe-Sizing Schizophrenia
2007-11-14 17:07:00
I tried on several pairs of shoes last night at the store. My favorites of the evening were the Erin suede peep-toe heels in the chili pepper color & the patent-leather Mary Janes in holiday red.Well, it appears that, after trying them on in the store, the Erin suede peep-toes I'd originally ordered from the catalog in size 8, (which were backordered until November 26th), are now going to be way too big. Apparently, I take a size 7 in this shoe. So I cancelled this backordered item & re-ordered the correct size. (They did have a 7 in another color, so I tried them on for sizing purposes.)Here's a picture of these shoes:This is also the case with the holiday-red, patent high-heeled Mary Janes. Here's a picture of those shoes:OK, this is really weird & frustrating. I thought I took an 8 in JCrew shoe sizes. So why do I take a 7 in their Erin peep-toes & Mary Janes? In their suede ballet flats & boots, I do take an 8. However, in some of their sandals I ta...
Cognitive functioning enhanced by cannabis use in schizophrenia
2007-11-03 01:27:00
MedWire News: Cannabis use by patients with schizophrenia is associated with enhanced cognitive functioning, with both frequency and recency of use linked to better neuropsychological performance, conclude Australian researchers. 1 November 2007[snip]"Logistic regression analysis revealed that more patients with lifetime cannabis abuse/dependence performed better on the psychomotor speed component than those without lifetime abuse/dependence. Frequency and recency of cannabis use were associated with better performance, particularly on the attention/processing speed and executive function domains. While acknowledging the issues around cannabis use in schizophrenia patients, the team concludes in the journal Schizophrenia Research: 'In essence, the findings of this study suggest that cannabinoids, via their agonistic effects on cannabinoid receptors in the forebrain, may have a potentially useful role in the treatment of high-order cognitive processes known to be impaired in schizo...
We're Schizophrenic Moral Relativists
2007-10-24 20:21:00
Listening to Danny Hodges of Calvary Chapel - St. Pete this morning on the way to work he explained the craziness in my head perfectly! It's because we as Christians are schizophrenic! Our new self is constantly in battle with the old! This was in his sermon on Judges 17 & 18. In this he also brings up the fact that Israel during this time had the same problem that is infecting the church today. "Moral Relativism". Moral relativism says that morality is determined by the culture, by society. Because society is continually changing, there is no absolute right or wrong. The Israelites had no spiritual leaders at this time and it was a "do what ever feels right to you" situation. Sound familiar? Check out Judges 17:5-6,5Now this man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and some idols and installed one of his sons as his priest. 6 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.He commits two disgressions against God in this verse:1. Creates graven images.2. Installed o...

Are Schizophrenics Better Off in Developing Countries?
2007-10-23 14:00:00
Based on on a series of cross-national studies by the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevailing view in international psychiatric circles has been that schizophrenics tend to fare better in developing countries. However, in an article in the September, 2007 issue of Schizophrenia Bulletin, a review of evidence from other research indicates that the picture is far more complex. Through literature review and tabulation of data from 23 longitudinal studies of schizophrenia outcomes in 11 low- and middle-income countries, evidence examing clinical outcomes, disability and social outcomes (marital and occupational status, in particular), and untreated samples and duration of untreated psychosis, have indicated a need to reexamine the conclusions of the original WHO studies. In particular, excess mortality and suicide need to be take into account in making broad generalizations about schizophrenia outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Click here for the abstract.

Delusional "Pseudotranssexualism" in Schizophrenia
2007-09-13 14:00:00
The Summer, 2007 issue of Psychiatry  described a case history of a 40-year old male patient with chronic schizophrenia who developed a preoccupation with changing his gender.  The authors review relevant literature and concluded that twenty percent of all schizophrenic patients experience sexual delusions at some point during the evolution of their illness (including becoming convinced that they are actually the wrong sex).  While true coexistence of schizophrenia and gender identity disorder is rare, disentangling them can be extremely tricky. Considering the irreversible consequences of gender reassignment surgery and the medical and legal implications implications, it is important that these patients be properly diagnosed. Since 1980. We are not told about the male biological clock. No will to prevent the average person from having autistic children. Those in the know do know about the paternal age effect but the political will is to have a weaker citizenry. We could have diminished the number of mentally ill, the diabetic, the autistic, the people with all kinds of genetic disorders, but instead the people who want to warn the public cannot do so.Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health 2006;60:851-853; doi:10.1136/jech.2005.045179Cop-yright © 2006 by the BMJ Publishing Group Ltd.Advanced paternal age: How old is too old? "Defining a cut-off at which the risk is significantly increased in the offspring could have an important impact on public health." A link between older fathers and neurodevelopmental disorders seen since the 1950s1: Eur Psychiatry. 2007 Jan;22(1):22-6. Epub 2006 Dec 4.LinksPaternal ages below or above 35 years old are associated with a different risk of schizophrenia in the offspring.Wohl M, Gorwood P.INSERM U675, 16 rue Henri Huchard 75018 Paris, France.BACKGROUND: A link between older age of fatherhood and an increased risk of schizophrenia was detected in 1958. Since then, 10 studies attempted to replicate this result with different methods, on samples with different origins, using different age classes. Defining a cut-off at which the risk is significantly increased in the offspring could have an important impact on public health. METHODS: A meta-analysis (Meta Win) was performed, assessing the mean effect size for each age class, taking into account the difference in age cla...

Check it out. Search the blog for the research studies. Many genetic changes that are deleterious occur in offspring of older fathers or sons of women whose fathers were older at the birth. What about fibromyalgia and paternal age? Do women with fibromyalgia have fathers who were 32 or older when they were born?Genetic Mutations Tied To Father in Most Cases By NATALIE ANGIER Published: May 17, 1994WHEN it comes to parceling out blame for birth defects and genetic disorders, women have historically shouldered most of the burden, particularly older mothers who supposedly risked their offspring's well-being by letting their eggs sit around growing progressively more stale and chromosomally unstable. By contrast, men have been seen as eternally fertile, able to father healthy children well into their dotage. But growing evidence suggests that men, rather than women, may be the source of most new genetic mutations in the population, and thus may be responsible for the majority of cong...

What is the Relationship Between Schizophrenia and Autism?
2007-09-05 20:12:00
Change the definition of autism in 1994 at Yale and create a confusion and an epidemic of a mystery disorder! Redefine early, very severe schizophrenia as autism and obfuscate the fact that as paternal age rises so does neurocognitve disorders. New definitions do change the perception of reality.
I'm gay and schizophrenic. So, WHY, am I complaining?!
2007-08-31 14:36:00
My gripe is that I'm saddled with both! I can look at my 'condition' objectively with a spiritual outlook and say seriously that I've been given an opportunity to learn, grow, evolve, become more compassionate, etc. For me, it's the only way to look at it. I try not to analyze it (anymore). I think that analyzing everything...is pointless. Probably because my perception is, sometimes, a little 'off-target'.Has "thinking" ever really been good for humanity? It's only purpose, it seems, is just to reinforce the suffering that we endure throughout our lives. Plus, I'm an air-sign - according to astrologers - and that makes me a 'thinker' (if you believe that junk/wisdom). I don't want to 'think'!! I want to feel! Does that make me sound gay?! Which leads me on to the gay thing...Most of the gay people I know (and I don't know many) claim to LOVE being gay and are so proud of their sexuality. Fair enough. Great! Except, that I 'think' that they are lying. Gay people suf...

Schizophr Bull. 2007 Aug 21; [Epub ahead of print]Aberrant Epigenetic Regulation Could Explain the Relationship of Paternal Age to Schizophrenia.Perrin MC, Brown AS, Malaspina D.2Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, New York University, New York, NY.The causal mechanism underlying the well-established relation between advancing paternal age and schizophrenia is hypothesized to involve mutational errors during spermatogenesis that occur with increasing frequency as males age. Point mutations are well known to increase with advancing paternal age while other errors such as altered copy number in repeat DNA and chromosome breakage have in some cases also been associated with advancing paternal age. Dysregulation of epigenetic processes may also be an important mechanism underlying the association between paternal age and schizophrenia. Evidence suggests that advancing age as well as environmental exposures alter epigenetic regulation. Errors in epigenetic processes, such as pa...

How is Type1 Diabetes Related to Offspring With Schizophrenia and Autism?
2007-08-08 18:35:00
This study does not answer the question as to why offspring with autism and schizophrenia have much more type 1 diabetes in parents and relatives. Both disorders increase in incidence with increasing paternal age in non-familial cases. Maybe type 1 diabetes occurs at an earlier stage of genetic mutation. I'm sure this information is of interest to those who study copy number variations in the various genomic research centers of the world.
What is the truth about autism and schizophrenia and other genetic disorder
2007-08-03 18:40:00
Dr. Dolores Malaspina and the fact Michael Wigler wants to bury."Finally, we examined if paternal age was related to the risk for autism in our cohort. We found very strong effects of advancing paternal age on the risk for autism and related pervasive developmental disorders (Reichenberg et al., in press). Compared to the offspring of fathers aged 30 years or younger, the risk was tripled for offspring of fathers in their forties and was increased fivefold when paternal age was >50 years. Together, these studies provide strong and convergent support for the hypothesis that later paternal age can influence neural functioning. The translational animal model offers the opportunity to identify candidate genes and epigenetic mechanisms that may explain the association of cognitive functioning with advancing paternal age." "Paternal age at conception is a robust risk factor for schizophrenia. Possible mechanisms include de novo point mutations or defective epigenetic regulation of paterna...

I could become schizophrenic apparently and Leftyphobia!

According to the BBC website and this article I am at greater risk of becoming schizophrenic because I am left handed. I preferred the finding that said Lefty's think quicker personally or are better in fights (though since I don't fight I hope to never find out). Just cause I use my brain differently to you righty types this means there must be a problem in there somewhere. The world is a leftyphobic place I tell you. Since everyone else complains that they are discriminated against I think I will start. All desks should have 2 computer mice so I don't have to move them when I have to sit at desks of righty's. There should always be left handed scissors available, left handed golf clubs (though I don't play golf), left handed versions of everything that has a right handed version always available and not costing more! 2007-07-19 00:35:00
In order to prevent autism one needs to pass the word to all teenagers and couples that there is a male biological clock. The mid 20s to 31 is the best age range to father babies. The media will not inform the public, the government will not inform the public (look at what the Surgeon General is allowed to say), the pharmaceutical research scientists and academic researchers won't inform the public, the psychiatrists won't inform the public, the genome institutes won't inform the public but the research is there and the evidence is overwhelming. It is not profitable to have healthy citizens. The average age of fatherhood is increasing in the US and in Western Europe. Research shows that offspring of older fathers are at increased risk for diseases and conditions (Bray et al., 2006). Some experts predict an upswing in cases of schizophrenia will accompany the increasing average paternal age. “The actual percentage of cases with paternal germ line-derived schizophrenia in a given...
John Nash: Schizophrenia Serves Evolution
2007-07-16 02:39:00
John Nash, Nobel prize winning mathematician and subject of the Oscar winning biographic movie "A Beautiful Mind", delivered a speech to the American Psychiatric Association's annual conference. He suggests that schizophrenia represents just one facet of the diversity created by evolutionary development of human beings. Mind Hacks In his talk, he suggested that mental illness may be the result of the otherwise healthy evolution of mental diversity. Applying his specialized understanding of "game theory" to an analysis of mental illness and his own experience with psychosis, the 79-year-old Nobel Laureate suggested that severe mental illness exists in nature as a consequence of the diversification of species, and that it may serve the needs of adaptation by its not infrequent association with genius.

Ideas on Treating Schizophrenia Have Come Full Circle
2007-07-07 06:13:00
Ideas about treating schizophrenia seem to be gradually coming full circle. What began as little more than blaming, shaming and confining, evolved over hundreds years into a state policy of institutional care with "humane treatment". Over the next hundred years treatment has evolved into primarily a highly professionalized medication regime with an inconsistently available community based supports. [Updated] Now there is evidence that early intervention in the course of schizophrenia with psychotherapy, medication, and consistently applied community based supports may sometimes prevent the usual long-term permanent disability. Medication alone is not sufficient treatment. What has always been assumed as a manifestation of the illness, may in fact be a by-product of a paternalistic and de-humanizing treatment by the community and service agencies as well as isolation due to the pervasive experience of stigma and discrimination by the individual. In this article, I will review som...
