2008-05-18 22:44:00 I have to admit when I hear someone say he's a defensive catcher or handles a pitching staff well I really never understood what that meant. The Mets have a long history of consistency behind home plate, in fact it's been our best position over the life of the team. Coming into this season in 31 yrs of the teams 46 yr existence the Mets have had six starting catchers, all six of those catchers appeared in All-star games as a Met and one is a Hall of Famer; Grote, Streans, Hundley, Piazza, Carter and Lo Duca. All except one hit for .250 or better and Todd Hundley who was a lifetime .230 hitter was a major home run threat for a few years. The Mets have a history of good hitting catchers and while I remember getting sick of watching the league run on Piazza I never really appreciated much more then their average.....So I really didn't understand why the team was going to move it's biggest chip for a weak hitting catcher and a platooning outfielder. Both of which don't appear any closer to returning, Alou missed his MRI due to the weather and Schneider is still receiving treatment. Alou's appointment has been re-scheduled for tomorrow and if he's going to be out for any significant time, I expect Omar will acquire a power right handed bat ( we can speculate on who that will be when the results are in). If Schneider goes on the DL I expect the Mets to bring up a player to fill-in. With two catchers already on the team, it will more then likely be a right handed hitter. Fernando Tatis has 8 HRs with a .529 Slg. pct but only has a BA of .225. Michel Abreu could be Delgado's right handed caddy but his average continues to decline and has now dipped to .256. I'm beginning to get concerned with the health of Schneider who has appeared in merely three games with five at bats. If his hamstring was as minor a concern as the club says it is, then Schneider should have returned a long time ago. It's reminiscent of Alou's hammy last year, who was due back in 3-4 weeks and it turned into two months. While I don't expect to see those type of power numbers during the season whats more important is the health of the catching staff. Schneider is a day or two away from playing, while Castro who also caught today will take it slow as a precaution.On the injury front, both Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro played in the simulated game.
