Powerful State School Board Association Support Casinos on the Ballot
2008-02-25 19:16:00 This could be the shot in the arm this legislation needs to make it to the ballot. The Kentucky School Board Association in backing legislation that would allow Kentuckians the right to vote if they want or do not want casinos. This is the single most important part of the casino question; do we want or do we not want casinos in Kentucky? This is not an endorsement for casino gaming, this is an endorsement for our right to vote on the issue. Does this change things in the Kentucky General Assembly? You bet it SHOULD and hopefully the factions within the Democratic controlled house can come together and get this legislation passed.

Shedding Some Light on the Mentality of the Toronto District School Board
2008-02-07 16:44:00 Today’s Globe and Mail has a story that illustrates the culture of secrecy of the Toronto District School Board and apparent consequences for breaching that secrecy. The bolded parts are sections I found of particular interest.Demoted vice-principal sues school boardJAMES BRADSHAW From Thursday's Globe and MailFebruary 7, 2008 at 4:21 AM ESTA former vice-principal of a Toronto elementary school is going to court today seeking remedy for what he claims were failures by the school board and Ontario College of Teachers to act on alleged threats and aggressive behaviour by the school's former principal.Gary Pieters, now vice-principal at Carleton Village Public School, also states in court documents that he was demoted and penalized for reporting his allegations. The documents filed with the court detail alleged misconduct between June, 2005, and February, 2006, by Gordon Kingsmill, then principal of the Shoreham Public School in the Jane-Finch area. Mr. Kingsmill's lawyer, Sarah C...

Student Sticks it to Ottawa School Board Trustee
2007-12-07 15:30:00 This is a short blur to talk to you about a young girl featured in the Ottawa Sun earlier this week. Madison McSweeney.A school board trustee has been polling the parents of Ottawa area schools to see if public schools should wear uniforms! GASP and SHUDDER! Uniforms in school boards. What a novel idea, this coming from a volunteer elected school board trustee, who spends tax payers money on trips to Vegas, Newfoundland and even San Diego...I wonder if he got the idea for the uniform from Las Vegas...remember Mr. Brockington what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! Now am I for or against uniforms...either way you cut it, both sides do have valid arguments, create a standard uniform, cuts down on potential gang attacks for those $200.00 shoes mom and dad bought (who's fault is that - mom and dad look in the mirror). Really what growing child needs expensive shoes...$20.00 sneakers should be good enough. And let us not forget about all those studies that say school marks are boosted by c...

Sex Offender Struggles in School Board Race
2007-11-15 15:01:00 This is a contemporary American story if ever there was one; if only because it’s hard to imagine it occuring at any other time in American history. Galveston School Board threatens to sue parent for speaking out against cra
2007-10-31 02:45:00 Things are heating up in Galveston, Texas.Sandra Tetley put together a website, the Galveston Alliance for Neighborhood Schools where she and other concerned parents and members of the community post their opinions about things going on in the Galveston School District. The School Board is not happy and has threatened to sue her.According to this story in the Galveston County Times, the district's attorney David Feldman states that there are at least 16 libelous postings half of which were posted by Sandra Tetley and the other half by anonymous users. The district claims the postings on the site are legally offensive.According to Sandra Tetley's research of the books, which are available to the public, the school paid the law firm of Henslee, Fowler and Hepworth $30,613.19 in one lump sum (check number 251656) for the work done so far which includes time spent monitoring the website.I agree with the concerned parents who stated that the $30,000 could have been better used for edu...
That Gosh Darn North Carolina School Board
2007-09-20 07:30:00 Sorry North Carolina high school athletes—the party is over. You’re no longer going to be able to express your feelings about what’s happening on the field. Charlie Adams, executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, said he plans to push a zero tolerance policy for profanity to the NCHSAA Board of Directors to vote on at their winter meetings. If it passes, Adams said he expects to levy fines next fall against schools whose athletes violate the language policy. Many states already have rules against profanity that call for fines ranging from $100 to $250. Adams says that for now no players will be punished with suspensions. Call me old fashioned, but when a player misses a big shot or gives up a home run he should be allowed to yell “fuck” in frustration. This rule can’t help but make me think of Amare Stoudemire getting suspended for taking two steps toward Robert Horry after Horry body checked Steve Nash. You just can&rsq...

Cherokee County School Board Nixes Charter Proposal
2007-09-13 04:33:00 According the the Cherokee Ledger.…The Cherokee County Board of Education voted unanimously Sept. 6 to deny a charter school planned for Woodstock, but organizers of the effort say board members left the door open for them to try again. Imagine Schools Non-Profit (ISNP) sponsored the private business venture to offer a taxpayer-supported alternative K-8 school to Cherokee students that claimed it would offer bilingual education and an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. Horsley said, however, that Imagine will wait to see whether HB 881, introduced last year by Rep. Jan Jones (R-Alpharetta) which would establish an independent Georgia Charter Schools Commission that would approve charter school petitions, passes this year’s legislature. She said asking a school board of education to approve a charter effort was almost like asking them to discredit what it offers. “It’s like going to McDonald’s and asking them to endorse Burger King...
South Carolina School Board Considers Banning Spanking and Paddling of Stud
2007-09-05 21:30:00 Is this barbaric practice STILL being implemented in United States educational facilities?! Amazingly so, according to this recent survey results: An Elon University poll taken this spring found 54 percent of North Carolina residents surveyed supported corporal punishment in schools. Forty percent opposed it. I'm filled with rage at the mere thought that ANY parent would condone such a form of discipline against their own child both at home OR in a school environment, and if you are a government official who happens to be reading this little cyberpost of mine, I strongly urge you to end this violence in every school across our USA!!!!!!!!! READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.

Al Gore, Institutional Behaviour, and School Boards
2007-07-12 14:43:00 I’m currently reading Al Gore’s excellent book, The Assault on Reason. Although I am only on chapter two, there is much in it thus far reinforcing the vital role that reason and education must play in a civilized society. As well, there is much in it detailing the abuse that institutions are capable of. It is the latter that I would like to offer a few comments on.Gore examines the behaviour of two bodies, the CIA and the FBI, to show how those at the top often subvert the integrity of their operatives. For example, in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, CIA analysts who disputed the link being forged between Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein were under tremendous pressure to keep their own counsel. The cost of displeasing their superiors was too high -lost opportunities for promotions and salary increases. Similarly, in an earlier era, for an FBI agent to challenge J. Edgar Hoover’s belief that Martin Luther King was closely aligned with the Communist Party could have meant dis...
Maryland state school board upholds pro-homosexual curriculum
2007-07-07 16:43:00 I do not hate homosexuals. I do believe, however, that their lifestyle should remain in the bedroom just like a heterosexual relationship should. Having said that I would be remiss not to admit here that I have strong religious convictions regarding the matter of homosexuality aside from the fact that I believe sex ...
UPDATE: Montgomery County MD School Board Passes New Curriculum
2007-06-13 16:09:00 In a report today from the Washington Post, the Montgomery County School Board did approve the unnecessarily controversial addition to middle and high school health curriculum. The article did take a bit of a swipe at the school board..."Much of the nation is moving toward an "abstinence-only" approach to sexeducation, which emphasizes the advantages of confining sex to marriage. Butschool systems in liberal communities are heading in the opposite direction, teaching more about sexual orientation, as well as contraception and abstinence,in what is termed "comprehensive" sex education."I suppose the generally conservative staff of the Post sees the mere mention of the fact that people have varying sexual orientations is enough to earn the board the label of "liberal." Personally, I think the board acted responsibly in adopting this curriculum. Congratulations, Montgomery County...you've made a huge step in the right direction.

School Board Swindles Global Warming Education
2007-05-15 09:25:00 As Conscious Earth readers read last month, free copies of An Inconvenient Truth were made available to every high school in British Columbia thanks to the charitable contribution of the Tides Canada Foundation. Now, Surrey school trustee Heather Stilwell wants the widely discredited mockumentary The Great Global Warming Swindle to be shown alongside Al Gore's global warming documentary."I am not sure. I mean I see evidence. I think there is climate change, there's no question about that. Whether what Al Gore says about it is the truth, I have questions."There are also a lot of people with questions about Ms. Stilwell. For those unfamiliar with local BC politics, she was previously known for her involvement in having books that depict same sex marriage banned from Surrey's public schools - a policy that was eventually struck down by the Supreme Court of Canada.Heather Stilwell is also a former leader of the Christian Heritage Party of Canada, and her political views are so far ...
Arrest warrant for P.G. school board member
2007-05-05 10:46:00 ----An arrest warrant has been issued for a Prince George's School Board member. Nathaniel Thomas is wanted for the alleged third degree sexual assault of an underage male student, while Thomas was a teacher at Forestville Military Academy. The case is apparently unrelated to the incident in which Thomas took an 18-year-old to San Francisco without parental permission. That particular incident is still under school board investigation got Thomas banned from school property, an ironic punishment for a school board member.Thomas is one of four elected at-large members of the school board and resides in Forestville, Md. though his current whereabouts are unknown to authorities. Does it even need to be said that Thomas should be bounced out of office for misconduct?----Relevant links: WTTG/5, WRC/4, Washington Post

Angry at your school board? Hey, here's some grapes...
2007-04-06 00:07:00 So-called activists disrupted the school board as it voted to balance its budget by closing schools to keep its costs in line with its declining student population. One audience member threw grapes, hitting a board member in the chest and getting arrested.Detroit is so mired in the past - the way the auto industry works, the way the state legislature doesn?t, the way race relations stymie our progress ? that it is possible that some activists still believe that it?s 1968.But the type of antics that occur at most board meetings accomplish nothing ? except to provide entertainment for news-watchers across America.Agnes Hitchcock, the Grape-Thrower, could have offered the board suggestions on how to continue to serve steak on a hamburger budget. School Board Requires Student Prayers to Allah; Christian Prayer Group Susp
2007-03-08 02:35:00 March 7, 2007 - Yes, the headline reads correctly, and if it were referring to a school board in Teheran, Gaza City, Riyadh or, shamefully enough, the very birthplace of our Savior, then such news would fail to garner a second thought. However, if you were seeking to find a society that targets Christianity for extinction, whilst simultaneously propping up Islam as a religion of which we should maximize our understanding, you apparently need to look no further than the west coast of the United States of America.Last week, 12 members of a Christian, student-prayer group at Heritage High School, in Washington state, were suspended for engaging in prayer activity in the lunchroom area, before school. Some of the suspensions were of the ten-day variety. It was determined, by school administrators, that the 10-15 minute, informal prayer sessions being held in the lunchroom area were "distruptive" to the successful flow of traffic in a school with 2,200 students. Apparently, the school of...

We were doing just fine before you came here and thought you could push U.S. around.
