next Superman film is going to need an Indian scientist for his next advent
2008-05-29 12:18:00
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has finally made it to an A-list Hollywood project with the sequel of Pink Panther. Though Mallika Sherawat is often talked about when an Indian name crops up with a foreign production, it looks like Priyanka Chopra might have just pulled off the biggest prize of them all. The buzz is that the next Superman film is going to need an Indian scientist for his next adventure and the agents for the film were casting for the role amongst the NRI actresses in the US. But when they got to know that a top league Indian actress was in their country shooting for a film, they decided to see for themselves how they could aid Superman’s quest.Apparently, just before the schedule of Karan Johar’s Dostana wrapped up in Miami, the casting agents landed on the sets and had a meeting with Priyanka and went back pretty impressed by what they saw. Needless to say they already had done enough research on her even before the meeting took place and knew what the sultry ac...

Scientist Say No Global Warming For The Next 10 Years
2008-05-01 22:16:00
April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Parts of North America and Europe may cool naturally over the next decade, as shifting ocean currents temporarily blunt the global-warming effect caused by mankind, Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences said.Average temperatures in areas such as California and France may drop over the next 10 years, influenced by colder flows in the North Atlantic, said a report today by the institution based in Kiel, Germany. Temperatures worldwide may stabilize in the period. The study was based on sea-surface temperatures of currents that move heat around the world, and vary from decade to decade. This regional cooling effect may temporarily neutralize the long- term warming phenomenon caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases building up around the earth, said Richard Wood, a research scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre, a U.K. provider of environmental and weather-related services.``Those natural climate variations could be stronger than the global-warming ...

Scientist Finds Truthiness in the 'Colbert Bump'
2008-04-21 13:14:00
With the intense competition between the two contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, pundits have mused over whether Hillary Clinton?s appearance on "The Colbert Report" last night will give the former First Lady a so-called "Colbert bump," a surge in popularity which the show?s host claims will accrue to any politician that appears on the show.Stephen Colbert first coined the eponymous term on his show after John Hall won in a close election to become a representative from New York in 2006 after an appearance on the "Report." Hall defeated incumbent Sue Kelly, who had declined to make an appearance on the show. Colbert himself commented on this after the election:"And how did he beat Kelly? According to the American Prospect, quote, 'Her refusal to appear on cable's popular "The Colbert Report" may have also proved somewhat costly,'" Colbert reported, adding, "Somewhat? All what. She could've gotten the 'Colbert bump,' instead she got the 'Colbert dump.'"Ever...
Salt Water Can "Burn," Scientist Confirms
2008-04-18 00:45:00
Salt water can indeed burn when exposed to a certain kind of radio wave, a university chemist has confirmed.Rustum Roy of Pennsylvania State University verified earlier this month that the radio waves break the water into its components, allowing the resulting freed hydrogen and oxygen to catch fire.Independent scientists said the phenomenon is credible as explained, though practical applications of the technology remain uncertain and it's unlikely to be a source of cheap energy.

What It Feels Like For a Scientist
2008-04-16 14:12:00
There's a saying that doctors often make the worst patients. Perhaps their knowledge of the human body makes them skeptical of others' work, a "back-seat driver" when being a patient instead of the healer. However, in this case the doctor used her spiral downwards as a chance to truly understand the subject of her life's research: the brain and all of its' abilities.Another TED Talk (Technology, Entertainment, Design conference), this time presented by Jill Bolte Taylor from Harvard. As she experienced the symptoms of a hemorrhagic stroke, she began to realize first-hand the immense capacity of the human brain to think, act, feel and coordinate our bodies and our lives. She brings out a real human brain and basically offers a great explanation of how the two halves of our brain make a whole person. Great information for caregivers of stroke victims, but I think this video serves as a good teaching tool for students also. For a more local-to-Fogtown look at doctors-as-patients, ch...

NOONGALLAS SCIENTIST WINS NOBEL PRIZE
2008-03-24 00:25:00
SCIENCE NEWSBy Science Correspondent Jan CarewRenowned Noongallas scientist, Professor Duke Ellington Trewavas, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Philosophical Physics for his pioneering work on the daftness of brushes. Professor Trewavas, who holds the Chair of Experimental Physics and Natural Philosophy at University College, Relubbus, is credited with finally resolving the age-old question of whether two brushes are dafter than one brush. The classic view was expounded by Aristotle in 348 B.C., when he argued that, since a single brush was infinitely daft, the combined daftness of two or more brushes could not exceed that of one alone. This view remained unchallenged for over two millenia until, in the eighteenth century, David Hume proposed the idea of a rocket ship accelerating for ever through space. Over trillions of years (the concept of "light years" was then unknown), as the ship progresses deeper and deeper into space, gradually picking up speed all the while, it approac...

Scientist have Found the 1,500 Year Climate Cycle
2008-03-08 17:52:00
The following is a list that includes more than 400 additional qualified scientists, with their home institutions, and the peer-reviewed studies they have published in professional journals, which reveal evidence of the moderate 1,500-year Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles. Together with a previous list released by Hudson on Sept. 12, 2007, this brings the total of scientific researchers who have published evidence of this natural cycle to more than 700. The lists also include dozens of authors who have published studies on the linkage of the 1,500-year cycle to variations in solar activity. The Hudson lists include researchers from many of the world?s top scientific institutions, including the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory affiliated with Columbia University, the Scripps Oceanographic Institute, various branches of the University of California, Australia?s Macquarie University, Canada?s Simon Fraser University, the Geological Survey of Denmark, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ch...
