White Sox get rid of Scott Linebrink, and an angel gets its wings
2010-12-04 23:00:00
There's a temptation when your least favorite player of the past few years is traded away--in a trade that seems to be made purely for the sake of getting rid of him--to kinda...go nuts. And I did. You know, the whole bit...screaming, crying, hugging people I don't know...which is really bad because I work in a hospital and there are codes. Linebrink threw 159 2/3 innings in three seasons at a 4.29 ERA, and the Sox traded him for a nothing prospect in the form of Kyle Cofield while picking up $3.5 million of the tab for the final year of Scott's contract, so from an outside perspective, it's really hard to imagine what I'm so happy about except that the return for Linebrink could have been a 70lb bag of moldy broccoli and it would still be an awesome trade.
Hooray! Scott Linebrink and the White Sox Have Parted Ways
2010-12-03 22:32:00
The Chicago White Sox jettisoned relief pitcher Scott Linebrink today to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Kyle Cofield. The 34-year-old Linebrink went 3-2 with a 4.40 ERA for the White Sox last season. He recorded 52 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. However, his numbers seemed a lot worse than that? Maybe it's because he was limited mostly to mop-up duty perhaps? Opposing hitters batted .262 against Linebrink in 2010....
White Sox player wrap-ups - Scott Linebrink & Carlos Torres
2010-10-14 08:32:00
In fairness to Scott Linebrink's 2010 season, I expected the very worst. I expected at some point during a July-Linebrink outing for U.S. Cellular Field to fold over on top of itself like a scene in Inception, maybe even with Leonardo Dicaprio screaming on the sidelines for good measure.....and that did not happen--and still up to this moment hasn't. "[Linebrink] became incredibly invested in a quest to throw a perfectly straight fastball and gave up 70 hits in 56 innings in the process in '09. Now he's keeping the hits down in the Spring but has become a walkaholic. Useless in either regard. 6 run leads are not safe with this man."
Can the White Sox can salvage Scott Linebrink?

But they sure as hell are going to try. Surprisingly, despite losing the trust of Ozzie Guillen as early as ever this season, Scott Linebrink has set his White Sox career-high for innings pitched with 56.1. But this is of course misleading. Linebrink has been in less high-leverage appearances this season than Brent Lillibridge, and as much as I hate to use the completely absurd "holds" statistic, Linebrink had 19 in 2008, 7 in '09, and is down to 4 this season. I could go at length about this in no way assesses the quality of a reliever, but it does show that Linebrink hasn't been trusted to be used in protecting leads. Three of the holds have come in the past 5 weeks, and the other one came in the 4th game in the season. Between that was a vast desert of garbage time.
Chris Sale could be promoted to White Sox this season--Man, Scott Linebrink
2010-07-21 02:31:00
I'm not the biggest prospect guy around, and why would I be? There's a minor league blog on ChicagoNow called Future Sox that is way more in-depth than I would even want to be. But I read up on 2010 White Sox 1st round draft pick Chris Sale. He was a college pitcher who was absolutely lights-out against not-quite-that-great competition in the Atlantic Sun Conference, but was still projected as a top-five guy in the draft. For no apparent reason, Chris plummeted to the 13th slot into the giddy hands of the Sox, and now we have an elite prospect. Sounded great. Awesome, even.
White Sox 2009: Scott Linebrink

Rule #1 in off-season free-agency signings: when it comes to relievers, tread lightly. Hopefully White Sox GM Kenny Williams will follow this rule in the future, thanks to Scott Linebrink....
New White Sox reliever Scott Linebrink looks to rebound from rough 2007 (AP
2007-11-30 00:23:00
Now that he’s settled in Chicago, new White Sox reliever Scott Linebrink plans to rebound from a rough 2007. Traded from San Diego to Milwaukee in late July, the right-hander finished 5-6 overall with a 3.71 ERA — his highest in five years. Still, he got a $19 million, four-year contract from the White Sox ...
White Sox Sign Scott Linebrink
2007-11-22 15:32:00
First reported by Bruce Levine of ESPN Sports Radio 1000 out of Chicago - the White Sox have signed free agent Scott Linebrink to a four-year, $19MM contract.  The Brewers have to be a bit disappointed, as Chicago's 8th overall pick in next June's draft is protected.  Instead they'll get a second round pick from the Sox as compensation for the Type A reliever. Four years is a long time to lock in the 31 year-old Linebrink.  He's never pitched in the American League, and you have to think he'll struggle.  This seems like a poor signing to me. showad();
Brewers Targeting Herges, Hawkins, Mahay
2007-11-14 17:50:00
Tom Haudricourt checks in with some names among the eight or nine free agent relievers on Brewers GM Doug Melvin's radar.  And to think, they cut this part out of Haudricourt's newspaper article. Melvin is currently interested in righties Matt Herges and LaTroy Hawkins, as well as southpaw Ron Mahay.  The Rockies have one-year offers on the table for Herges and Hawkins in the $1.5-2MM range.  Any team guaranteeing two years can probably have Herges or Hawkins.  Mahay's in the three-year, $12MM class.  Haudricourt suggests David Riske, another 3/12 type, might also be a consideration. The Brewers have an offer out to Francisco Cordero, and haven't decided whether to make a proposal to Scott Linebrink.  Both are Type A free agents, so at least the Brewers should offer them arbitration.  I say let 'em both walk and reap the draft picks. showad();
Brewers Hope To Keep Cordero, Linebrink
2007-10-04 18:52:00
A couple of high-priced pieces of Milwaukee's bullpen have reached free agency - Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink.  According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers will make an aggressive offer to Cordero and hope to retain Linebrink as well. My hunch is that both players leave for greener pastures.  Cordero seems likely to earn at least a four-year, $40MM deal.  That's elite closer territory.  Linebrink should be compensated in the three years, $15-18MM range.  While backloading is possible, the Brewers would be looking at adding $15MM per year on average to keep this pair. My back of the napkin math says the Crew has around $60MM committed for '08.  Only Ben Sheets will make more than $10MM.  The Brewers' Opening Day '07 payroll was about $71MM, so there is room in the budget for both Cordero and Linebrink.  The team's core players are very good and very cheap.  The time to strike in free agency is...
Brewers activate Scott Linebrink, designate veteran Elmer Dessens (AP)
2007-08-05 02:35:00
The Brewers activated newly acquired reliever Scott Linebrink from the bereavement list before Saturday night’s game with the Philadelphia Phillies. To make room on the roster for Linebrink, Milwaukee designated veteran Elmer Dessens for assignment. The right-handed Linebrink pitched in two games for the Brewers since being acquired in a July 25 trade with the ...

Rosenthal's Latest: Lohse, Hunter, Contreras
2007-07-16 23:00:00
The latest trade and signing rumors from Ken Rosenthal: Rosenthal believes Alex Rodriguez's ability to play shortstop could increase the number of suitors.  Take a look at the free agents - there may not be a single viable option at short this winter.  Still, the number of suitors for Rodriguez is severely limited by his massive contract requirement.  Not too many clubs aside from the Yankees and Red Sox can get in on $240MM over eight years or whatever.  The lack of available, reasonably priced shortstops could compel the Braves and Orioles to aggressively shop Edgar Renteria and Miguel Tejada. As a 29 year-old free agent starter with decent stuff, Scott Boras could sell Kyle Lohse as the next Gil Meche this winter.  Meche's work in the season's first three months would only aid the wishcasting.  I put up a little Lohse history here, writing that his deal will likely fall somewhere between Jason Marquis and Meche.  Other free agent starters who...
Linebrink Long Shot For Phillies
2007-04-25 20:15:00
What's the deal with Scott Linebrink?  Is he in line for a contract extension, or is he a top trading chip for the Padres?  MLBTradeRumors helps you sort it out.  A history of rumormongering: 7/31/06: Gordon Edes writes of a three team deal where the Red Sox would've gotten Linebrink and Julio Lugo while giving up Mike Lowell and prospects.  This was a wild day though...even Alfonso Soriano to Boston surfaced at one point. 1/26/07:  Buster Olney first brings up the possible Aaron Rowand for Linebrink deal. 2/24/07: Tom Krasovic mentions past and present interested parties in the Phillies, Red Sox, and Mets.  He quotes Kevin Towers, who indicated that since a trade hadn't happened yet it probably wouldn't. 4/21/07: Ken Rosenthal says the contract extension talks are on hold, as the Padres may consider Liney their best trading chip. 4/23/07: Rosenthal says the Phils and Padres may revisit the Rowand/Linebrink idea, and that Linebrink is probably avai...
