Scottish income: Royal preferreds
2009-06-19 06:00:00
In her top-ranked Global Investing advisory, Vivian Lewis looks at a lesser-known area of the income market -- non-cumulative preferreds -- explaining these vehicles and offering some favorites."Over 20 years ago, Barclays Bank, which is British, invented a new vehicle for raising money in the U.S. market to enhance its capital ratios and finance its growing dollar business. "They were called non-cumulative preferred shares and were issued at $25/share to pay dividends four times a year just as normal U.S. stocks do. The clear target for these vehicles was U.S. retail investors. "Some British banks use a different term, non-cumulative preference shares; they mean the same thing."At the time, Barclays was able to enhance the amount it was paying in dividends by using a feature of the British tax code called Advance Corporate Taxes. This no longer applies. "So the yield on preferred shares now is actually being paid as a cost of capital by the Britis...

Team GB? More like Team England with a Scottish manager.
2008-07-20 18:39:00
One of the most interesting headlines to come out of today?s newspapers was the story that head of the London 2012 committee Sebastian Coe has offered the job Team Great Britain?s football coach to Sir Alex Ferguson. Now the idea of having a Great British football team has long been suggested but the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish Football Associations feel the idea would threaten their independence within Fifa. I think what they are really afraid is having none of their players chosen for the squad. As you may know the tournament is for mainly U23 players but each side can include three senior players of their choosing. Now in my eyes I couldn?t think of any U23 Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish that would do better than the English players you can get. As for the senior players well in the past many would have said Ryan Giggs but now he has retired from international football you can discount the Welsh Wizard. Now I know that in four years time things could be very differen...

Scottish Cup Final: Queen of the South v Rangers - Betting Preview
2008-05-24 13:33:00
I’ve often wished I could borrow Dr. Emett L. Brown’s De Lorean and travel through time. If I could, today’s game at Hampden Park could just be one of those games that I’d go back to 2007 for to have a wee punt. You see back in August Queen of the South were 750/1 to ...

Really funny jokes-Scottish soldier
2008-05-15 09:06:00
A Scottish soldier in full military dress marches into a pharmacy to speak to the chemist. The Scot opens his sporran and pulls out a neatly folded cotton bandanna, unfolds it to reveal a smaller silk square which he also unfolds to reveal a condom. The condom has a number of patches on it. He holds it up, and eyes it critically.'How much to repair it?' the Scot asks the pharmacist.'Six pence,' says the pharmacist. How much for a new one?''Ten pence,' says the pharmacist. The Scot folds the condom into the silk square and the cotton bandanna, places it in his sporran and marches out the door of the pharmacy, kilt swinging. A moment or two later the pharmacist hears a great shout go up, followed by an even greater shout. The Scot walks back into the pharmacy, and again speaks to the pharmacist.'The regiment has taken a vote,' the Scot says. 'We'll have a new one.'

The Scottish Rockettes: The UK?s Hottest Dance Team!

If It Isn’t Scottish…
2008-05-08 07:21:00
So, I was thinking of highroads and lowroads today for some reason. That lead me to that song Loch Lomond. You know the rest; “and I’ll get to Scotland before ye.” What a coincidence too that I’ve recently found that I have Scotch blood in me! While researching the seemingly jaunty song, I found this great NPR program called What’s In A Song. If this illo is kinda creepy, listen to the 5 minute exploration of the song’s origins. Interesting!

Great Scottish Castles (1)
2008-04-19 21:13:00
Scotland's turbulent history has left an enduring mark on the landscape in shape of the many castles, fortresses and tower houses that pepper the countryside. Some - such as Edinburgh or Stirling - rank amongst Europe's most impressive structures while other less grand examples provide a stark insight into darker times. The first time I landed in Scotland, one of my goals was to visit every single castle. That until I found a book that lists them all. There are thousands castles scattered in Scotland! Even to visit all castles in Aberdeen and Grampian area will take years, unless if I do it every day. Maybe. In the mean time, I set my goal to be a simpler one: visit all famous castles first. Here are 5 of them: Edinburgh Castle, EdinburghScotland's most important and famous castle. I can't remember how many times I have been there, maybe 4 times, and counting. It is officially suggested to allocate 2-3 hours to wander around the complex. Each century has seen changes and additio...

Scottish Cultural Lessons: Humour
2008-04-18 11:55:00
Although these were compiled by Mike Smith of Auld Reekie Rants, I feel that they are sufficiently in the public domain that they are fair game to republish. For those without a Scottish cultural background, I have to say sorry. Detailed explanations available in comments given sufficient groveling or large quantities of unmarked virtual bills.A Glasgow woman goes to the dentist and settles down in the chair. 'Comfy?' asks the dentist. 'Govan,' she replies. What did the Siamese twins from Glasgow call their autobiography? Oor Wullie. A guy walks into an antiques shop and says: 'How much for the set of antlers?' 'Two hundred quid,' says the bloke behind the counter. 'That's affa deer,' says the guy. Did you hear about the fella who liked eating bricks and cement? He's awa' noo. After announcing he's getting married, a boy tells his pal he'll be wearing the kilt. 'And what's the tartan?' asks his mate. 'Oh, she'll be wearing a white dress,' he replies. What do you ...

Scottish Politicians Huff and Puff Patriotically
2008-03-31 23:53:00
Scottish politicians in Scotland have forced an enormous back down by their Scottish colleagues in Westminster.Public buildings in Scotland will be allowed to fly the Saltire year-round following a government climbdown in response to pressure from nationalists.UK ministers will this week announce the lifting of restrictions on flag flying that have been in force since 1924. The rules stipulate that the Union Jack must must take precedence over all national flags on 18 days each year.Scottish government buildings with only one flagpole must take down the Saltire and replace it with the Union Jack on specified national days including the Queen's birthday, Remembrance Day and Commonwealth Day. The decision to give the Saltire equal status has been welcomed by the Scottish National party. ?It's a recognition that we are in charge of our flag flying arrangements,? said a senior Scottish government source.Wow! Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, will use his Easter Sunday Homily to launch an attack on the Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. The BBC has published an extnded extract of the sermon:"At this time, as well as thinking of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we are asked to consider again what I have described as the 'essential aspect of a Christian vocation - namely to be a missionary people'.I think that there is a greater need than ever before for each and every Christian to be aware of that call at this present time.So many people are worried about the future - the possibility of banks failing; the increased cost of living with regard to food, petrol and many of those things which we find essential; our concerns about climate change and global warming; our increasing worries about the dangers of nuclear disaster. But I think that a fundamental concern of all of our people at this present time, and one w...
