World's First Hypersonic Hydrocarbon-Fueled Scramjet Closer To First F
2008-09-26 17:23:00
From Aero-News Network: Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Says Recent Ground Tests Simulated Mach 5 Conditions. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne says it is a step closer to flight testing the world's first hypersonic hydrocarbon-fueled and -cooled scramjet engine. The X-51A Scramjet Engine De
Could we just circulate the air in scramjet propulsion?
2008-03-08 17:59:00
This is an obvious idea so there must be some reason why it won't work. In scramjet propulsion a big problem is that the airstream is moving so fast it is difficult to achieve complete combustion in the short time the air is in the engine, even with the great amount of slowing used in scramjets
The Hypersonic Scramjet: NY to Tokyo in 2h
2007-12-15 03:44:00
Scramjet engines would be capable of flying from New York to Tokyo in two hours. They’ve been in development for decades and governments from around the world - USA, Australia and China - are finally making them a reality. So just how fast is a scramjet? You may need a bit of comparison: A Boeing 747 cruises ...
HyFly Mach 6 Scramjet Missile Test
2007-09-21 04:25:00
Another set of ground testing has been recently completed by the U.S. defense contractor Aerojet for the Hypersonics Flight Demonstration program (HyFly). The program, one of several ramjet/scramjet based programs supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has the ultimate goal of creating a Mach 6 cruise missile with a range of 1100km (690 mile) capable of launching from ships and submarines as well as U.S. aircraft. China Developing Scramjet Propulsion
2007-09-03 16:06:00
China is starting to ramp up its scramjet propulsion work?an initiative that will benefit high-speed missile programs while also helping the country to develop advanced aerospace materials, greater computational capabilities and a cadre of young engineers who have matured as a result of cutting-edge engine and aerodynamic challenges. Building on its ramjet experience, China is embracing ...
Scramjet hits Mach 10 over Australia
2007-06-22 17:52:00
A supersonic scramjet engine has been successfully launched from a test range in Australia. The Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) said the scramjet achieved reached 10 times the speed of sound during the test. Scramjets are supersonic combustion engines that use oxygen from the atmosphere to burn onboard fuel. By contrast, conventional rockets carry ...
Scramjet Tested at Mach 10
2007-06-15 16:13:00
Scientists and engineers from the U.S. and Australia successfully tested a supersonic combustion ramjet--or scramjet--aircraft high above the Australian outback, reaching speeds up to 11,000 km (6,835 miles) per hour, or 10 times the speed of sound. Flight data will be examined over coming weeks and compared to ground tests conducted in the United States, DARPA chief researcher Steven Walker said in a statement. Scramjets, in the shorter term, will allow more powerful military aircraft. Eventually, they will allow faster civilian air travel and cheaper satellite launches.
