Screenplay, Treatment, Outline, Synopsis
2008-02-27 14:00:00 In a perfect world the only document that would determine the articulation of a project into production would be the screenplay itself. Alas the world aint perfect and so the process of moving a cinematic project from concept to production involves a range of distilled writing manifestations. Treatment, Synopsis, Outline, Tag Line, Step Outline, Concept statement - this list seems endless. It's arguable that these ancillary documents have little purpose other than to serve as means for producers to comprehend the story and make decisions on it without actually reading the script. That's the cynics perspective anyway. The more positive way to look at the various documents that accompany the screenplay is to consider them as building block components of not the writing process culminating in the screenplay, but rather the production process culminating in the movie.Treatment, synopsis, outline are just tools not religious objects and writers should be free to use them as tools n...

?Internal Dynamics? in a Story versus Screenplay
2007-11-16 00:00:00 Most screenplays that I read or coach get stuck in Act 2 due to the dreaded ?internal dynamics.? And by that I mean a crucial plot development that relies totally on a ?revelation? or a ?change of heart? or a ?realization? that happens INSIDE our protagonist, and thus changes the flow of the story. You can?t have ...

Many Try To Write Screenplays
2007-11-14 00:00:00 by Zinn Jeremiah At one time novel writing was the most popular form of creative writing there was. In today’s world, however, novel writing takes a back seat to screenwriting as a popular creative writing form. Playwriting has a degree of popularity as well, certainly, but not to the level that screenwriting does. Screenwriting has become ...

The Talking Screenplay
2007-11-03 14:00:00 Times change and the process of script-reading is not exempt from evolution. iscript.com is a new online resource offering a very interesting service for screenwriters of all abilities and experience. You simply submit your screenplay and iscript have it read by professional actors, recorded as an mp3 audio file and returned to you. Of itself the process of hearing back your script as an aural experience is one that offers a distinctly different perspective: one with the potential to re-shape your project in dynamic and functional ways. Moreover it also presents as a very useful format for potential producers or collaborators to 'read' the script - stick it on your ipod or car stereo and read while drive, walk or run. Lastly you can always then offer your screenplay as a podcast or audio player from your website as a means of self promotion. The possibilities really are rather functional and diverse. At about a $1 per page its also really very reasonable. The iscript.com website ha...

Spoilers: Download Link Surfaces to 122-Page ‘Watchmen’ Screenplay By A
2007-09-11 23:57:00 If you’re interested in the upcoming Zack Snyder film “Watchmen,†Dustin Levell has pointed me to a site that appears to be its informational haven. For starters, and of course this is a spoiler, here’s an image I created from the first page of the screenplay as penned by Alex Tse.Next, we have a link to the full, 122-page script. As for the story behind what you’d read in that script, WatchmenComicMovie.com has provided this text:On June 23, 2006, Warner Bros. announced that Zack Snyder would direct “Watchmen†with Alex Tse attached to write the script.Tse drew the best elements from two of the project’s previous drafts (written by David Hayter). The script did not keep the contemporary atmosphere that Hayter created [and] instead returned to the Cold War setting of the Watchmen comic.Tse produced rap videos and worked part-time for Miramax and Disney until he sold a script called “87 Fleer†to Showtime. He [later] wrote “The Game,†which eventually became â€...

Writer’s Screenplay Made into Movie Nine Years After His Death
2007-07-28 15:44:00 Jerome Bixby was a celebrated science fiction writer for years. After his death in 1998, it appeared that his contribution to the world was over. However, a new screenplay that was finished right before his death has resurfaced into a film that was screened at this year’s Comic-Con. The film, titled “The Man From Earth†was dictated by Bixby to his son, Emerson who is also a screenwriter. After his death, Emerson sold the script for $200,000. Anchor Bay Entertainment acquired the movie for distribution on DVD in the fall, and it is already receiving flattering reviews. Bixby started out as a short story writer in the 1950s. One of his pieces, titled “It’s a Good Life,†was voted into The Science Fiction hall of Fame and was later used in an episode of “The Twilight Zone.†He wrote several episodes of “The Twilight Zone†as well as “Fantastic Voyage†and the original “Star Trek.†He also wrote It! The Terror from Beyond Space about a monster who sneaks onb...

Screenplay's End: A Warning to Screenwriters
2007-07-08 00:11:00 This Sirius screenplay project began at the end of 2006, when I contacted Robert Crossley, the Literary Executor of the Olaf Stapledon Estate. I wanted to write a screenplay based on Olaf Stapledon's novel, Odd John. Mr. Crossley informed me that the Estate didn't hold the rights to Odd John (I subsequently found out that the rights to that novel are held by the estate of George Pal, or at least they once were), but that I was welcome to buy the movie rights to any other book that was available. Sirius was my second choice. Mr. Crossley informed me that someone had the rights to Sirius, but the option was due to be renewed in January, 2007. When I checked back in January, it turned out that the other writer decided not to renew the option. I jumped at the opportunity to buy an option for Sirius. I signed the contract, which gave me exclusive rights to the movie rights to the novel, and sent payment of £300 (which is about $600 US) to John Stapledon, the authors son, in the UK. ...

My New Screenplay
2007-04-27 20:04:00 Last night I started a new screenplay for a short film. I was really, really excited. My wife read what I'd written so far and in true form, told me it was vile and disgusting. Somehow, I've managed to get my enthusiasm back up again. She's really great at kicking me in stomach about anything that makes me happy, any creative effort I make, etc. I'm hoping that will change over time. Because as much as I want to give up, I never will.
