Words fail me - Screenwriters' Strike
2007-11-28 23:54:00
by Ed Naha With stories of war, governmental avarice and global calamities hitting the news cycles hourly, sometimes a story slips by that, while important, doesn’t have the immediate sting of a catastrophic event. One such story is the ongoing strike by the screen and television writers of America. Go ahead, snort and roll your eyes. Get it out of your system. According to a lot of media reports, these writers are greedy Hollywood types; you know: lazy, over-paid, latte swilling, no-talents who aren’t content with having two Porsches in their driveways and a yearly paycheck of $200,000! Heck, even I wouldn’t have sympathy for those pinheads… and I am one! Having been a member of the Writers Guild of America for twenty (fairly) odd years, I’m amazed at how the reporting of this strike resembles something concocted by Lewis Carroll on acid. When the strike began, a month ago, ABC ran the following headline on its Internetz site: “Inside the WGA – Even at $400...

Home prices will be effected by a Screenwriters Guild strike
2007-11-05 04:35:00
Home prices will be effected by a Screenwriters Guild strike More than any other group the unemployed tend to loss their homes. Thus, the impact of a strike by Writers Guild of America effecting the entertainment industry, a major source of income for those in Los Angeles county, is very noteworthy. The impact of a strike is likely to be widespread. First effecting those directly employed by those in the industry and other business used in the day to business of producing entertainment, such as caters and security. A strike of 2 months or more will effect places business further down the spending chain such as art galleries and coffee shops. The areas likely effected by a strike will be areas not seriously effected by the sub prime woes. Hollywood, West Hollywood and most of the west side are likely to be the hardest hit. If a prolonged strikes occurs, foreclosures will put significant pressure on prices. I think it is interesting that the...
Superman Screenwriters Will Not Return For Sequel
2007-10-22 18:20:00
It has been reported that Superman Returns screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris have bowed out from penning a sequel. Does this mark the end for Superman? How long will it be before Bryan Singer jumps ship? I?ve got a feeling it won?t be long before he does. Warner Bros is now taking story pitches for ...

It’s not often I go to festivals like this - in fact I don’t think I have ever been to one. For the UK film industry it did seem to attract some big names well worth listening to. There were people such as screenwriters Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix); William ...
Screenplay's End: A Warning to Screenwriters
2007-07-08 00:11:00
This Sirius screenplay project began at the end of 2006, when I contacted Robert Crossley, the Literary Executor of the Olaf Stapledon Estate. I wanted to write a screenplay based on Olaf Stapledon's novel, Odd John. Mr. Crossley informed me that the Estate didn't hold the rights to Odd John (I subsequently found out that the rights to that novel are held by the estate of George Pal, or at least they once were), but that I was welcome to buy the movie rights to any other book that was available. Sirius was my second choice. Mr. Crossley informed me that someone had the rights to Sirius, but the option was due to be renewed in January, 2007. When I checked back in January, it turned out that the other writer decided not to renew the option. I jumped at the opportunity to buy an option for Sirius. I signed the contract, which gave me exclusive rights to the movie rights to the novel, and sent payment of £300 (which is about $600 US) to John Stapledon, the authors son, in the UK. ...
