Ubuntu Getting Rid of Menus for HUD? Screw That!
2012-01-25 09:00:00
I have been a long time Ubuntu user. I have used it since at least version 5.04. It has seriously been the base for all things I have ever learned in Linux. Like most people I started out on the Linux desktop with Ubuntu and moved up to servers when I started getting more familiar with the terminal and it's commands. Things have been changing on Ubuntu a lot over the last few releases, and I'm now rather over the awesomeness that Ubuntu once was.I just read today that the upcoming release of Ubuntu, version 12.04, is doing another drastic change. The last big one was forcing Unity down everyone's throats. Some people like it I guesss, but I'm a Gnome man and I like to keep my UI's the way they are. I am familiar with them, and I know where everything is. When Ubuntu made Unity the default I started to get a little ticked at them. With the news I learned about today that they are going to ditch their menus for a HUD or Head's Up Display, they are replacing menus from all the ap...

"Screw" The Lockout, Some Bear Players Continue Their Workouts...
2011-04-02 04:21:00
Sun-Times writer Sean Jensen, ink's another great article which discloses that several players (namely Johnny Knox & Matt Toeaina) continue their workouts despite being "locked-Out" of Halas Hall (see article). Now for anyone who doubts that all the players want is to get-back-to-work, think again!  Several Bears players have been coordinating workout with other players in order to stay in "game-ready" shape despite being "lockout" by the owners.  This is "definitely" a step in the right direction, and proof that the players are serious about getting back to work ASAP.First it was Bears WR Rashied Davis who began to forward the idea to get as many players involved in regular workouts even during this current labor dispute with the owners (see...
Screw caution, I'm optimistic about Jake Peavy
2011-03-15 08:05:00
Part of becoming a blogger for a team is getting beaten over the head with the daily narrative. You watch every game (thanks to your friend/enemy, the DVR), read the press, and the blogs, and a lot sooner than you realize, you gain perspective. Perspective is nice, as it's a great guard against saying crazy nonsense that will never be true, but also inhibits your ability to get too excited about...well...anything. The slow creep to becoming a sourpuss starts, and the only way to combat it is with bold, conscious attempts to be boldly positive. Well, consider this a reckless attempt to do just that.

Weekly Vitriol: Screw Navy
2010-10-21 18:15:00
Every year, like terrible, horrifying clockwork, the story repeats itself. "Navy is soooooo awesome? Do you know what Navy did for us once, way back during WWII?" Yeah, I got it. I got it the first thousand times somebody told me about it too. In the Notre Dame world, that story is hard to avoid. But you know what we gave them in return for that? Profitability. Navy gets to play us every year for as long as they want. And they sure as hell turn that into some profit. Sure, Notre Dame enjoys playing in the Meadowlands, and I'm sure as hell making the trip over there to Ireland, but you know who's making bank off of those games? The Navy is. They're turning their football players into small piles of dollar signs just like all the rest of the FBS schools in the world, and their game against Notre Dame every year is a major factor in them being in the black.

What to make of Bobby Jenks after most recent screw-up
2010-08-06 09:35:00
I don't particularly like Bobby Jenks. It was always going to take a lot to make the big, enormous, hillbilly guy from Idaho with a blonde methlab chin beard relateable to me, even if he hadn't chosen P.O.D. as his walk-out song. He's dismissive to all criticism, constantly refers to his six years of service as if they contained more than a single-season of dominance, and can't understand why fans don't trust him in a way similar to an owner being perplexed why the dog he beats with a french dictionary runs away at the sight of him. If given the choice to swap out Jenks for another MLB closer, I would take it. I haven't made up my mind yet who it would be, but it wouldn't be Mariano Rivera (too old), Matt Capps (too Twinsy), and it certainly wouldn't be Carlos Marmol (walks are annoying). So with that stated; I don't think Bobby's latest flare up is a cause for concern. I write so many anti-Jenks articles that I basically have a template I could work from, so it's ...

Natural Cork, Synthetic Cork, or Screw Cap?
2010-05-26 05:13:00
Today, Dr. Vino discussed wine closures - natural corks, synthetic corks, and screw caps.  He cites a Wall Street Journal article that states that synthetic corks have a larger market share than screw caps.  I, like Dr. Vino, was surprised to discover this fact. Is one type of closure better than the others?  Do you prefer the traditional, natural cork, or are screw caps the way to go?  What about plastic corks?  Leave some comments below, and let us know what you think. One quick programming note:  Tonight we had a chance to visit Fine Wine Brokers in Lincoln Square.  Look for our first wine shop review this Thursday!...
Stu Jackson getting prepared to screw the Bulls over?
2010-04-23 20:13:00
We'll see.   I've not been a fan of Stu Jackson ever since he completely screwed the Bulls last playoffs when they determined that Rondo's foul on Miller was not a flagrant, nor was his throwing Kirk Hinrich into the scorers table off the ball worthy of a suspension.  Here's this from Sam Smith though: Though after the game I wondered if the Bulls were getting a raw deal as I saw league vice president Stu Jackson, who supervises officials and games, in private conversations with Cavs GM Danny Ferry and then with coach Mike Brown. It didn't seem right the Cavs could do that much private lobbying after the game with the league official who potentially can have...

The Inequality of March Madness: How the mid-majors are still getting screw
2010-03-15 23:29:00
2,842,197 words will be written in the next 72 hours in regards to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament (I have done my fair share, here). Many experts will pick out a team and point to how they were unfairly seeded. Others will point to a certain conference and argue that it was overvalued or under appreciated. Each region will be dissected in a multitude of ways. Almost all of this will be anecdotal and pure opinion. With my background in finance and accounting, I feel like the only way to tackle this type of discussion would be to look at the hard facts. The best way to find problems and underlying inequality in the NCAA Tournament would be to compare the...

Ricketts Family Brings Fresh Ideas on How To Screw Cubs Fans to the North S
2010-02-13 18:09:00
All Your Money Are Belong To Us  If you thought Trib Co was bad for scalping Cubs tickets to fans, wait until you get a load of the Ricketts' "presale" idea: The Cubs will offer fans an opportunity to purchase individual game tickets before they go on sale to the public on Feb. 19. But the catch is that you'll be paying 20 percent more than the face value of the ticket The team's Web site has announced the inaugural "MasterCard First Chance Pre-Sale," which begins on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. All home games, including Opening Day, will be made available through Cubs.com by paying a 20 percent premium on each ticket. Fans can save five percent off that price if...
Chicago to O'Hare airlines: Screw you
2010-02-10 05:20:00
O'Hare Airport. Lot's of room for expansion, right? The Daley administration always insisted that funding the O'Hare Airport expansion wouldn't be a problem. Despite repeated warnings by expansion opponents that the funding would be illusive, if not impossible, the city always said, "trust us." The guarantees that the funding would "be there" even after United and American airlines repeatedly said they could not pay for the expansion's second phase, the most important part of the $15-billion-plus O'Hare Modernization Program.Meanwhile, the city kept negotiating, hoping that a deal for more airline financial support could be worked out. Not, the Tribune reported that the two airlines are at loggerheads with the city:An elusive deal on funding the final new runways at O'Hare International Airport...
Rusty, old CTA screw symbolizes need for federal capital funds
2009-12-17 13:00:00
At a House committee hearing earlier this month, Federal Transit Administration chief Peter Rogoff held up a rusty, 65-year-old CTA screw to point out how badly the CTA and other transit agencies need more federal capital funding to bring the systems into a state of good repair. It's unclear whether CTA President Richard Rodriguez gave Rogoff that screw. But Rodriguez told the CTA board that story last week in discussing his own efforts to lobby for funds in Washington. According to Rodriguez' board report: "The FTA has recommended that the reauthorization include funding that would help large, older transit systems such as the CTA get closer to a state of good repair."Other news of notes from the president's report:Last weekend should...

Politics is Like Trying to Screw a Cat in the Ass (Part 2)
2009-11-18 18:39:00
by Jeriah HildwinePolitical art is at home in Chicago, but this is sometimes a risky proposition.  Consider Frederick Holland's painfully didactic American Blend, from last year's Consuming War at the Hyde Park Art Center.  "American Blend"Some of the work in that show was quite good; I suspect that the phenomenon of ham-handed propaganda interspersed with other, more subtle works is something of a trend in group shows of political art....

My Favorite Science Screw-ups In The Star Trek Universe
2009-05-17 06:48:00
With the new 2009 Star Trek movie out, science fiction geeks the world over can once again begin their ritual of dissecting, analyzing, and arguing about Star Trek. And, wow, has it really been eleven movies already? How hip! So here’s my favorite “WTF?” moments which I experience whenever I ponder my favorite show about wearing tight uniforms to trespass all over the galaxy: Mr. Spock: Besides the anomalies like how he always has to stand up and peer into a garbage chute, there’s the mere existence of the pointy-eared one himself. He’s a half-human, half-Vulcan. As Clifford A. Pickover, my favorite mad scientist, points out in this article on the unrealistic science in SF, it shouldn’t be possible for an alien from another planet to impregnate a human. Think how difficult it is to get two Earthling species to cross-breed, even two species of ape. While we’re discussing the problems of breeding aliens and humans, I’d better link La...
