Royalty screwed
2009-09-17 22:23:00
Dear music industry,Seriously? Isn't this just a little bit over the top?Gizmodo has a story about music royalty groups ASCAP and BMI asking iTunes and other online music entities to pay royalties on those short 30-second previews. Gizmodo says it best: "You know, the things that entice people to pay for music. They want to be paid for advertisements for their product."Here are my thoughts....
Our TV is Totally Partially Screwed
2009-07-21 14:30:00
Photo credit: Mitsubishi So like many houses with five guys living amidst their own filth and unrealistic expectations of how much interest women have in them, we have a television. Our television is a Mitsubishi 55" HD behemoth. It is enormous, taking up at least a quarter of the living room--a hulking black box from the late '90s that is probably rendering us all sterile with its radiation. And right now it's not working--well, it's kind of not working. It's working in that it shows a picture with sound and everything, but at random intervals the screen will go funky. Blurring blue and red shadows will appear around the edges of the image so that it looks like you're...

iTunes Tiered Pricing Goes Live, We Get Gently Screwed
2009-04-07 20:08:00
From Gizmodo: When we called the new iTunes tiered price scheme "Popular Songs Cost More Money" pricing, we had no idea how accurate that was: It's here, but I've yet to find a single $0.69 track. UPDATED. Though it may have been naive, the general expectation was that the new $
Nightly Ramble: We’re Screwed.
2009-01-09 22:05:00
Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read anywhere on the ’sphere… BitsBlog’s Nightly Ramble Disgusted, would be the word of the day. Grab your ankles, America, here it comes. Yestrday’s Obama speech. What can one say about it? (Remembering this is supposedly a mainstream venue, which blows away whatI’d like to say about it at the off.)  It was clearly a message to those of you who still hold onto the outdated, quaint and , yes, racist notions of common sense, and thereby haven’t gotten the message yet:  Big government is back, and in a big way. We’re going to spend out way to prosperity… but we can only do that, if we spend as directed by government. Ignore the concept that spending as directed by government is exactly what landed us in this soup pot in the first place, when they tried to alter housing priaces by waving a governmental magic wand. The speech of course was, as is Obama’s wont, long on panic creati...

Just How Screwed are We?
2008-10-18 17:49:00
Bruce at Q&O, yesterday notes a question at Men’s News Daily: Now that Barack Obama has received the endorsement of the Brady Campaign gun-control group, will the Supreme Court’s findings in the D.C. gun-ban “Heller” case matter? I don’t know as that was the threshold, but certainly the answer is ‘no’. Bruce points out that DC is in fact a federal district, and therefore when Democrats rule the roost, Heller, at least insofar as DC is concerned, is done. I tell him: …consider the implications this thing drags along with it, taht are WAY beyond Heller. Is there any part of the constitution they won’t ignore, given that degree of power? Consider the entire Corsi investigation/arrest/Odinga meme. Consider the Joe the Plumber deal. In each of those cases… and there’s certainly more, the level of intimidation employed takes on a Stalinist level of intensity. Butt those two situations and their implications, up against our cu...

Yep?This time it is That Good Ole, All American Company?Ford Motors? Ford Motor Company is building it?s new $3 Billion factory just outside Mexico City. They will hire 4,500 Mexicans to build it?s new ?Fiesta Model? and a new deisel engine, at considerably less money than they pay American Workers. In the meantime?Ford Motor Company is expected to announce massive lay-offs at it?s North American Operations soon? American Workers and Consumers made Ford one of the Richest corporations in World History? When reminded of that fact by reporters, Ford President, Alan Mullaly said ?Fuckem, don?t bother me with that shit, it?s lunch time. Besides, I gotta get to the bank and deposit my Profit Share Check. Now, get out of my way, before I have the Federales throw you in the clink.? So much for being ?Brand Loyal? Buy American?RIGHT !!!
He works hard to do a good job and gets screwed anyway

This week I've been coming down hard on Coffeekid to get every bit of his missing work in, get his final grades up and do a good job on his 'final projects'. He's worked hard, including being un-officially grounded from friends all week as he had to come home immediately from school and either study or do homework or read his book for a book report. Last night I insisted nothing else comes
Pops Screwed Up
2008-05-28 09:33:00
Gregg Popovich had a big decision to make. His Spurs trailed by two and the Lakers had the ball with 28 seconds left. Should he play defense and hope for a last second shot, or should he foul and attempt to trim the margin? Popovich decided to play defense. Wrong move. When you play defense, if the Lakers score the game is over. If they get an offensive rebound the game is over. If you lose the rebound out of bounds the game is over. If the Lakers draw a foul late in the possession the game is over. If there’s a long battle for the rebound your ensuing offensive possession is cut in half. And the Spurs didn’t even try to steal the ball. They just let the Lakers walk it up court. Under Popovich’s strategy the best case scenario was being left with 1-4 seconds in which to tie the game. Not so good. Fouling would have lengthened the game. The Lakers are a good foul shooting team, but only Kobe and Fisher are automatic. There’s a good chance a free ...
Book Review: 10 Books That Screwed Up the World By Benjamin Wiker PHD

NBC Sibling Rivalry
2008-05-15 13:16:00
NYP Page Six: Two of NBC's top shows are at war. "Today" executive producer Jim Bell is said to be livid at "Access Hollywood" exec producer Rob Silverstein because "Access" lifted the "Today" show interview of Angelina Jolie and aired excerpts from it last night, before "Today" could broadcast the star's confirmation that she's pregnant with twins. Sources said the Jolie interview was released to "Access" only so it could air a teaser promoting the "Today" segment, but "Access" posted a transcript of the whole interview yesterday afternoon. " 'Today' paid to fly Natalie Morales to Cannes and 'Access' screwed them," said one insider. "Jim and Rob exchanged words. Rob had to be told off, but the situation was resolved favorably." "Today" reps said the show "is always happy to share the wealth of our many exclusive interviews throughout the entire NBC Universal family." Silverstein said, via a rep, "All 5-foot-7 of me on a good day would never dare take on 6-foot-5 Jim Bell."
How I Screwed Up Shorting Cannon Exploration Inc (CNEX), Down 40% Today, Wh
2008-05-14 18:33:00
Where do I even begin on this one. Like my previous near-perfect call on fellow joke of a company pump and dump VRML, my readers made much more $ than I did. In fact, I lost a bundle shorting CNEX the other day at $6, admittedly too early/forced to due to the circumstances, covering at $7.20 yesterday, not wanting to risk a big-time gap higher/possible short squeeze today. Fortunately for me, there were shares available to short this morning so I reserved 500 and as I posted HERE, I planned on watching this one all day, shorting only when the pattern was to my liking. After a slight gap higher, the buyers were drowned by sellers???we???re talking 10k volume here folks, nothing major???so I quickly placed an order to short sell with a limit of $7 when the price was $7.25 x $7.30???3 minutes later the priced had cracked big-time below my limit and it appeared I hadn???t gotten my execution. Damnit! Having been in this spot many times before, I knew it???s tough shorting into probable ...
Here's how one screwed Miami condo investor thinks he's gonna break even on
2008-05-13 15:09:00
It's gotta suck for millions of investors around the country (and around the world) who bought debt-traps that only rent out for a fraction of what it costs to "own".Negative cash flow on a depreciating condo or house is the worst of both worlds.I liked this spreadsheet though. Oh, the optimism. Yup, the price is gonna go up, not down. Yup, rental income is going to ABSOLUTELY SOAR. And no, expenses won't increase - not at all! Amazing. And sad.Too bad this poor sap didn't do a spreadsheet BEFORE he bought his debt-trap. Too bad millions didn't bother doing a spreadsheet before they took out toxic loans or listened to realtors on commission. And too bad that just because you put numbers on a spreadsheet doesn't make them true.
Lebanon: Yet Another Foreign Policy Opportunity Screwed Up by the Bush Admi
2008-05-12 03:09:00
In February 2005, shortly after the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, the pro-Syrian Lebanese government resigned.  The day it happened, I warned against any stupid pro-American triumphalism: But whatever happens next in Lebanon, it would be a mistake to view it only through the lens of some kind of Middle Eastern “people power,” ...
Screwed By The Second Circuit Again
2008-05-06 21:46:00
The New York Times tells us here that the U.S. Court of Appeals of New York for the Second Circuit did it again last week. But first, a bit of background. As noted, the city filed suit against gun manufacturers in 2000, alleging that they had ?knowingly flooded illicit, underground markets with their weapons.? and the suit was upheld in December 2005 by Judge Jack B. Weinstein of Federal District Court in Brooklyn.Enter the Second Circuit (from here)? The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, by a 2-to-1 vote, ruled (on 5/1) that the nuisance law (the city argued that the gun makers were in violation of that law) does not count because it does not apply specifically to gun sales. That is a bad reading of the federal law. Congress said only that the state law must be ?applicable? to gun sales, and the nuisance law ? which prohibits creating a condition that endangers the safety of others ? clearly is.Congress, of course, is also very much to blame, for trying to immuni...
How I Screwed Up These Two Near-Perfect Calls To Sell Short
2008-05-03 00:22:00
Take a look at my latest two trades???shorting 1,200 shares of probable-fraud spam-happy BSHF into a morning dip at $2.55 and 1,000 shares of failing business-so-let???s-float-a-tak-eover-rumor VM into a nasty slightly negative close yesterday at $4.01???both of which tanked 15%+ within a few hours of market action of my shorting. Great calls to be sure, but I somehow managed to screwed both up–and judging from the comments, I’m glad many of you guys did better! Unfortunately, the BSHF pattern appeared the day before this new website went live and since it didn???t tank in the early morning EXACTLY like I wanted, I covered for a $75 loss since I had a million things to do to make the launch. Didn’t feel guilty about it until later in the day when it tanked 50 cents/share in a perfect representation of a spam stock falling apart! Sad sad sad, but one of those rare unavoidable situations. I have no excuse for taking quick 5 cents/share profits on VM–just my fer...

Paula Abdul's Flub On 'American Idol': She Says, 'We All Just Screwed Up';
2008-04-30 07:48:00
One fan defends Abdul's 'huge brain fart,' while another asks, 'Why even vote?'By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Fraenkel Paula Abdul on Tuesday's "American Idol" Photo: Fox It was the flub heard 'round the world. On a night when "American Idol" threw viewers yet another curveball by switching up the critique format, the only one who seemed really thrown was perennially positive judge Paula Abdul, who appeared to give Jason Castro poor marks for his second song ... before he even sang it. The painfully awkward few minutes of classic Paula confusion made for great TV, but also got some fans wondering about exactly what the gaffe meant. Literally within minutes, the blogosphere began lighting up with conspiracy theories and elaborate scenarios suggesting that the pre-tique was part of the producers' secret plans to have a David vs. David ratings-bonanza finale. Before the show was even over, "Idol" blog Rickey.org posted this comment: "I totally did n...

Housing Crash Consequence #2857: Screwed Homeowners Associations

Not quite the HOA-paid-for wine and cheese parties everyone expected, eh?Foreclosures force HOAs to cut corners on upkeep Homeowners associations strapped by unpaid assessments related to the foreclosure-ridden real-estate market are mustering volunteer work crews, cutting maintenance jobs and scrimping on landscaping to save money.Phoenix, Chandler and Avondale are among Valley cities fielding calls for help from HOAs that previously turned only ...

Savers - the most screwed class of all, hated by Ben Bernanke
2008-04-05 11:53:00
* Savings accounts, bonds and CD's paying pretty much next to nothing* The US dollar getting more and more worthless by the day* Inflation roaring (and a lot more than the government reports)* No safe alternatesBen Bernanke has pretty much told savers to go f*ck themselves, while rewarding people and businesses who racked up massive debts. I'll still take cash over debt (and steak over ramen) any day, but Bernanke is savers' public enemy #1 for sureThe US already has a negative savings rate, and with no incentive to save, I'm not sure how that will improve any time soon. But you want a solution? Congress needs to make interest earned on savings accounts and CD's 100% tax free. And they need to dramatically raise the limits on what can be saved in a Roth or IRA. Immediately. Now.But of course, they won't do that, as that would be the competent and correct thing to do. And they've got housing gamblers to bail out first. F*ck savers. F*ck under-consumers. This is America - lan...

Leafs future could get un-screwed with bold move for Stamkos
2008-03-31 22:35:00
You know, some things don't really need to be said, because, well, words should not be wasted. Yes, even in this space. But for the obvious stuff, just save your breath. Patrick and Jonathan Roy need anger counseling. That Ovechkin kid is pretty good. Ray Emery looks ready to go off the deep end. Jessica Biel is hot.Straightforward, right? Then there is Richard Peddie, who didn't exactly raise any eyebrows when addressing the current plight of the MLSE cash cow, also known as the Toronto Maple Leafs, as the Cupless clock gets set to chime out another bell."We failed."Yes, friends, this is what is known as an understatement. You see, the Leafs can't even screw up right. A recent exercise in futility in the form of a decent run has the Leafs in no-man's land when it comes to their first pick at the draft, but that can be changed with a little creativity.Whatever is needed to get that first or second pick, you do it if you are Cliff Fletcher. If it costs the Leafs their firs...

Being Screwed
2008-03-26 14:47:00
This afternoon I counted the weeks, or months, but it was all laid out for me by two friends over coffee. There were no denials on my part. I was surprised how zoned out I was. I sat, listened and agreed with everything, but I didn’t open my mouth. Everything felt smooth, at least on the outside, and within -on some level - but I noticed the frequency of lighting up. This past fortnight, I have been trying to put a list of all the possible things to raise in at a shrink session, and I’ve come up with zilch. My coffee tasted like crap, a side effect from medication, and I couldn’t taste my smoke but I kept at it. There, within the pleasant ambiance of the suburban café, it came out. “They’re screwing you.”“I know they’re screwing me,” I said. Both gaped at me, perplexed at my quietude.“And? What? You couldn’t believe how tired I am.” And I am. I have written countless letters to various places regarding the job limbo.“Then push it.”“I’ve pus...

Especially in LA, Phoenix, Vegas, Miami, Tampa and San Diego. You'll also start hearing soon about cities defaulting on their debt, and going bankrupt. We're just days away from that. You would have thought after the dot-com bubble that local and state governments would have learned their lesson and prepared for a rainy day. But this bubble bust will hurt them so much worse as they lose their sales tax revenue (so long HELOC buying binges) as well as their real estate taxes which will plummet along with the price of the taxed properties. We're still just getting started. We know the cause, now it's time to see the effects.
