2008-04-01 15:35:00 We're back again folks!As promised, in this installment we're going to sculpt a face. An anime face. Again, I didn't take many in-progress shot. But hopefully this few pictures can better explain how I approach sculpting an anime face.Here we go!At first I only have a ball shaped like a reverse tear drop to define the head. Then I add the nose and sculpt it into a pointy button shape. Most anime noses are like this. I then add a ball and blend it to make the forehead.With the forehead added and dried, I then start defining the shape of the face. I draw guide lines where the major facial feature will be placed (eyes, mouth, etc.). I didn't drew in the ears since they're going to be covered by hair anyway. I also drawn in the shape of the chin and jaw to get that 'anime' look. Using a hobby knife, I then carve the contour of the face. I cant really explain, go grab an anime figure and study the face. This time the subjects are the land of Oz and Narnia.My entry this time is Wicked Witch of the West, at least my rendition of her. Like most of my sculpt she is made from soft oil clay. I'm still brewing my home made clay... still no luck. No armature (unless you count a single q-tip stick as armature), and standing 4,5" tall. This is also a chance for me to study up on sculpting clothes and drapery.As always enjoy, and thanks for visiting!

Costume and prop making! Yes folks, I've stepped into the cosplay arena. Just a few months back I got the chance to design and make a saint-seiya insipired costume for a friend of mine. More on that in the next post (I promise!). That aside, it's time for another figure post.I've sculpted this for a dear friend of mine. There are as many way to sculpt a face as there is sculptors. This is my way. It might not be the best way for you, but I hope you can learn and develop your own way to sculpt faces. Like always, have some reference handy. We'll be aiming for likeness, and those references are needed for that. I can't stress this enough.Okay, let's sculpt some face!Start by making a ball of clay roughly the size of the head. Use your reference as a guide. You can also stick it on the body to get an estimate of the size and proportion of the ball.I then flatten the ball and score some guide lines. Using this guide lines, I cut away parts of the squished ball to make the chin and jaw.
