Mathematical LEGO Sculptures
2008-03-31 06:05:00
I'm not quite sure how it first occurred to me to build a Möbius band out of LEGO bricks, but the thought was irresistible. There is a large and active adult LEGO community on the internet. Like many others among its members, I had played with LEGO as a child and forgotten about it. Decades later, and with children of my own, it slowly dawned on me that first, the little Danish bricks are still fun to play around with, and second, I could afford to buy a lot more of them than I ever had before.

Ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were multi coloured
2008-02-04 11:52:00
A new research has revealed that many ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were painted in a variety of colours other than white.   The research, conducted by Dr Vinzenz Brinkmann of the Liebighaus museum in Frankfurt using strong raking light sources and beams of ultraviolet light, has shown that many Classical statues were gaudily painted in a plethora of colours.   Though sculptures made during the period of renaissance consisted of only white marble, new research has confirmed that much older figurines were multi-coloured.   When ancient sculptures began to be unearthed early in the 19th century, such as those from the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina, excavated in 1811, significant traces of paint were visible.   For research regarding this unusual finding, Brinkmann took the help of strong raking light, which can show finely drawn incised sketches to guide the painter.   Sculptures, which were studied using this process, were a lion’s head on the should...

Modern Outlook in Bronze Sculptures
2008-01-31 11:04:00
Bronze is a metal that is used for crafting sculptures, weapons and house hold items. It has been in use for more than 5,000 years and archeology has yielded artifacts and weapons made from this metal. First used in Iran, Iraq and Turkey during the 3,500 BC, while Indian subcontinent has a rich cache of archeological bronze artifacts. The basic alloy of bronze contains tin and aluminum while traces of silicon and phosphorous can be detected. Bronze expands on cooling and melts easily making it the ideal metal for sculptures. The first instance of life like sculptures was seen during the Greek period which started out with bronze sheet welded and crafted into objects. It was later that the refined bronze statues were made by making clay models and lining them with a layer of wax. Braced with iron nails and molten wax was poured in melting the wax and gave bronze the required space to fill in. After chipping away the clay, bronze statue was revealed that showed a hollow statue with re...

Artist's Amazing Wombs View Foetus Sculptures
2008-01-24 15:35:00
Marc Quinn last amazed the public by placing a giant pregnant disabled woman on the Fourth Plinth of Trafalgar Square. Now he is looking at pregnancy from the inside with nine large sculptures depicting the development of a foetus from 22 days to just before birth. They have been carved in a pink marble whose mottling conveys the fine veins below the growing child's skin.Great expectations: the huge foetus sculptures in the White Cube gallery by Marc Quinn are carved out of marble with pink veining that makes them look more realistic. The sculptures will be sold under the title EvolutionThey go on display at the White Cube Mason's Yard gallery, St James's, tomorrow in Quinn's first exhibition in the capital since 2005.Quinn was inspired partly by Slaves, sculptures by the Renaissance master Michelangelo, in which bodies almost fight their way out of rough-hewn rock. But the five-ton sculptures, made of marble quarried from the Spanish-Portuguese border, were also prompted by witnes...

Sculpture in perforated steel with sections upholstered in feltDesigners came up with a landscape of concept furniture derived from the statue-like forms of people sitting, standing or leaning against walls engaged in playing the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The result is "sculptural and machine-like". Each piece contains a PSP unit and users are encouraged to step inside these structures to play, the idea being to create an individual gaming experience while allowing for interaction with other gamers in other pieces using the PSP’s wi-fi capabilities.Inspired by gaming, after the Nintendo Wii, the Wii-fit is coming.
