Student Inventors Keep Seagulls Off Their Boat

The above picture is from the Port of Pascagoula when an unusually large number of Seagulls were foraging around in the wake of the ship. Its usual to see these trailing behind trawlers as they scoure the waters, but seeing them swooping around our stern was a welcome change. -.

In the 1930s, the giant pier and pavilion (later destroyed by fire) rose to fame for billing such big-name acts as Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, the Ink Spots, and Guy Lombardo. Gershwin fans may be interested to know that George and Ira composed "Porgy and Bess" while staying on the beach. Although fire wiped out most of the beach's historical structures, the area is still a popular draw for surfers, picnickers, anglers, and sunbathers, and it offers a pleasant retreat from harried site-seeing for the brain-tired traveler. I think my dislike stems right from my cadetship, when I would spotlessly clean or paint the deck & a seagull would come swooping down from the heavens, crap on the deck & nonchalantly fly away to another part ofthe deck to repeat its handiwork. As I progressed along the ranks, I grew slowly possessive of the ships under me & the behaviour of the Seagulls was simply unacceptable. In most parts of the world, these chaps are excellent fliers & often glide in place for up to fifteen minuteswithout moving a wing. Actually that would be neat in itself, but what happens is that they keep pace with the moving ship & maintain their position without flapping a wing.
