More Money, Less Talent for Junior?
2008-05-15 01:32:00
It appears that the Seattle Mariners have no problem taking on Ken Griffey’s salary or next year’s option, meaning Cincinnati wouldn’t be on the hook for any of it.  To me, this is a good thing.  If Seattle required Cincinnati to eat some of his contract, then high caliber prospects would have to be offered up ...
4 K + 1 HR = L
2008-05-13 06:56:00
Monday was an absolute roller coaster of a game in which Seattle loses 13-12.  Brandon Morrow picks up the loss after surrendering a walk-off blast to former Mariner Ramon Vazquez. I’ve written several times about Morrow and how he doesn’t have what it takes to be a consistently successful reliever in the major leagues.  The main ...
Cinci About to Make a Move
2008-05-12 23:54:00
This is total speculation, but interesting nonetheless.  Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker told the media that super prospect Jay Bruce would be recalled soon.  If Bruce is called up to the big club then someone must be on their way out.  This could mean that Cinci is about to trade one of their outfielders (most likely ...
M?s Watching Griffey [UPDATED]
2008-05-12 19:26:00
No more speculation; the Seattle Mariners indeed have their eye on Ken Griffey Jr.  Seattle is the worst team in the American League right now, so it will be interesting to see this unfold.  I’m not so sure that Griffey would accept a trade to Seattle at this point, but we’ll see.  I wrote about the Griffey-to-Seattle scenario ...

All-Stars?
2008-05-10 17:05:00
Did anyone else have a chuckle when they saw this?  Vote for Ichiro.  Vote for Rauuuul.  Maybe send a couple write-in votes for Bad Wlad, and maybe Beltre and Lopez as well.  The rest don’t deserve much recognition.  I wonder if King Felix or the Cranky Canuck have a shot at the All-Star team.
Sexson Charges The Mound
2008-05-09 06:51:00
After Seattle Mariners starter Felix Hernandez hit two Texas Rangers hitters, former Boston Red Sox prospect and current Ranger Kason Gabbard did what any normal pitcher would do. He buzzed one of the other team’s stars. I do have to say the pitch wasn’t close to hitting him but obviously Sexson thought it was. IE users ...

Triunfel snaps out of slump, Peguero and Halman impressing. Hello, Mariners Fans. Game Report: Seattle Mariners vs. New York Yankees
2008-05-05 18:21:00
It was your classic west vs. east matchup Sunday afternoon as the Mariners tried to avoid a sweep against the Yankees. Unfortunately, the Bronx Bombers came to play despite starting the day a tad slow. After scoring only seven runs in their previous four games, the Mariners gave starter Carlos Silva a 2-0 lead after ...
Putz Problemo
2008-05-02 05:38:00
I think I just developed a stomach ulcer.  J.J. Putz fails to slam the door, yet again, and memories of Seattle winning almost every game once leading after eight seem distant. So what’s wrong with Putz? Here is one of his walks from tonight:   And here is a strikeout from last year: What is the first thing you notice?  ...
Any More Moves for the M?s?
2008-05-02 03:56:00
It was certainly refreshing to see Seattle’s willingness to admit a mistake even before the conclusion of the season’s first month.  Rich Aurillia stuck around until July 9th in 2004, Bret Boone until July 2nd in 2005, Carl Everett until July 25th in 2006, and Scott Spiezio somehow made it through 141 games over two seasons ...
Clement, Balentien Called Up
2008-04-30 22:31:00
I just mentioned that Brad Wilkerson was on his way out, and now John Hickey of the Seattle P-I is reporting that Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien will indeed be joining the Seattle Mariners in Cleveland for Wednesday’s ballgame.  As I type Geoff Baker updates his blog that both Wilkerson and Greg Norton have been designated for ...
Got Wilk? Not Anymore
2008-04-30 22:10:00
Brad Wilkerson’s 3-for-3 effort last night wasn’t enough to save him job.  Ryan Divish of the News Tribune is reporting that Wilkerson’s locker has been cleaned out, name plate and all. It’s unknown at this point whether he has been given his unconditional release or if he was designated for assignment.  No word yet on the ...
Silva-Sized Win for the M?s
2008-04-30 04:49:00
Sunday night: King Felix Hernandez dominates the Oakland Athletics for 7 innings, keeping them scoreless and striking out 10 while walking just 2.  He returns for the 8th inning and walks the first batter.  Then surrenders a double.  Then walks another batter.  Then surrenders a single that drives in a pair.  Tied ballgame.  Felix is ...
Clement and Wlad to be Called Up [Updated]
2008-04-30 00:57:00
Manager John McLaren told reporters pre-game that top prospects Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien will be called up to the big leagues “sooner than later.”  This was obviously expected considering the struggles of the Seattle Mariner offense.  This also seems to fit in well with the discovery that Clement’s free agent eligibilitycan be pushed back one ...
Clement in AAA for a Reason [Updated]
2008-04-29 06:51:00
GM Bill Bavasi may have had us all fooled.  We’ve all been sitting around debating why the hell Jeff Clement hadn’t been called up, but Bavasi might have been just doing his job.  How this slipped past everyone I will never know, but a Seattle based radio program was reporting that by leaving Clement in the minor leagues until May 8th it ...

Photo Gallery: Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles, April 6th; Balto., Md - Oriole Park at Camden YardsToday was a wonderful day at the Yard, as Luis Hernandez (yes, him), had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom-of-the-ninth inning to send Baltimore to victory as they beat the Mariners, 3-2.Basically, the Orioles had their backs to the wall, as they were shut-out by young phenom, Felix Hernandez for eight innings, until the M's bullpen took over and things went haywire.With J.J. Putz out on the DL, the Mariners turned things to Eric O'Flaherty. Let's just say he was awful.The O's rally in the ninth would start off with Nick Markakis doubling to left; thereafter, Kevin Millar grounded out to move Markakis to third; the next batter, Aubrey Huff grounded out as well to drive him in.Luke Scott came up after Huff, with two outs, and singled to right getting the ball past Seattle's Jose Vidro. Seattle manager John McLaren pulled the book on O'Flaherty and Mark Lowe came into the...
Luke Scott has perfect night and Baltimore Orioles beat Seattle Mariners 6-
2008-04-06 04:22:00
Luke Scott went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and the Baltimore Orioles received solid contributions from several other newcomers Saturday night in a 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Matt Albers (1-0) pitched 1 2-3 innings of one-hit relief and George Sherrill worked the ninth for his third save in three tries. Read the full story.

The New Seattle Mariners Closer Is....
2008-04-03 14:14:00
Wow.  What a first few days of the fantasy baseball season!.  First, Victor Martinez hurts his hamstring in the first game.  Then, Pedro martinez strains his and will miss 4-6 weeks.  Then, Seattle Mariners' close JJ Putz is placed on the DL with a ribcage injury. While the VMart injury has caused just minor heart palpitations as he is reportedly going to miss just a few games and, by his own account, can pinch-hit now, the Pedro Martinez injury will cause all those fantasy owners who believed he could have a successful return to the mound slap their foreheads in acceptance that the belief was self-delusion.  It is the Putz injury that causes the most fantasy activity. JJ Putz was one of the 1st closers drafted this year (ADP 50) and will solidfy the dogma that fantasy owners should not draft a closer early.  The opportunity cost is too easy to assess.  Some of the players taken right after Putz - Orioles' OF Nick Markakis, Yankees' 2B Robinson ...
30 Years of Seattle Mariners Trademarks
2008-04-02 06:05:00
As I write this, the Seattle Mariners are 1-0 in the 2008 season. At this rate, they’ll not only make the playoffs for the first time in seven years — they’ll win the World Series with an undefeated record. Ah, the optimism a new season brings. In recognition of this special time, I thought it would be fun to look at my ball team’s registered trademarks over the years. Turns out they have had 18 total applications and registrations, with eight currently listed as “live.” Only three real logos of note, which roughly divide my years as a kid, teenager, and lawyer. Let’s hope the current one brings them luck this year.
MLB Predictions: American League
2008-03-31 05:01:00
East1. Boston Red Sox 2. New York Yankees3. Toronto Blue Jays4. Tampa Bay Devil Rays5. Baltimore OriolesThe Red Sox should be one of the top teams in the MLB. They still have a dominant line up with David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Mike Lowell, plus Jacoby Ellsbury will be a great leadoff man. The starting pitching rotation is solid with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester leading the way and the bullpen remains one of the best with Jon Papelbon and Hideki Okajima. The Yankees will obviously fight for the top of the division but their pitching staff isn't that strong. Also, watch out for the Blue Jays they may finally get into the playoffs if they stay healthy.Central1. Detroit Tigers2. Cleveland Indians3. Chicago White Sox4. Minnesota Twins5. Kansas City RoyalsThe Tigers have a very potent offense with Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, and Miguel Cabrera. They should have no problem putting up runs. The pitching staff is even better now with the addition of Dontrelle Willis. I don't know how m...

Seattle Mariners starter Carlos Silva looked ready for the regular season. His counterpart, the Chicago Cubs’ Ted Lilly, did not. With the wind blowing out, Silva gave up a run and three hits in five innings and the Mariners beat the Cubs 10-2 in a game that featured seven homers, six by the Mariners. Read the ...

Catch Me If You Can: Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners - American League
2008-03-19 10:22:00
Of all the divisional races in Major League Baseball, none is being written off as already over like the American League West where the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are seen as near-locks to make the playoffs. The Seattle Mariners beg to differ. In 2007, the Mariners managed to offer the Angels some ...
Ask the Experts: Seattle Mariners
2008-03-07 13:52:00
Our friends over at RotoProfessor had the opportunity to grill John Hickey, the Mariners beat writer for the Seattle Post Intelligence (see his coverage by clicking here). He gives an interesting look into the upcoming season, so let?s get down to what he had to say.Question 1: How do you see Erik Bedard performing in his first year in Seattle?John Hickey: He?s already had good success in the American League, and it should be more of the same. The Mariners have half of a great infield defense (the left half) and a decent offense, both of which should help make him a winner.Question 2: Which player do you see having the better offensive season, Raul Ibanez, Adrian Beltre or Richie Sexson and why?John Hickey: I?m looking for Ibanez to have the best offensive season of the three because he?s left-handed in a left-handed hitter?s park and because he?s in the last year of his contract. That being said, much more has to be forthcoming from Sexson after the worst year of his career.Questio...

Previous Team Analyses: TB TOR BOS BAL NYY CHC HOU STL PIT CIN MIL LAA OAK TEX2007 marked a season of disappointment for fantasy owners regarding the Seattle Mariners. The Felix Hernandez bandwagon never really got going, as he was good but far from great. Richie Sexson was awful. Raul Ibanez took a step back. Baseball-wise, they did win 88 games, and fantasy-wise, things weren't really as bad as they seemed. Now, with the addition of Erik Bedard, the Mariners look like a team poised for success. Seattle Mariners 2008 Top Ten Prospects
2008-02-13 03:55:00
Luckily for the M's, the aquisition of Erik Bedard only cost them one prospect off their top ten list, and may also have guaranteed the American League Western Division title without mortgaging their future. One that from a minor league standpoint doesn't necessarily shine brightly.   1) Jeff
The Mariner?s Sign Bedard!

Erik Bedard’s trade to the Seattle Mariners seems to have finally been completed. This deal has been in talks for a couple of months now and has been announced as on & off several times. Kuroda Remains Undecided
2007-12-15 04:50:00
After all the ruckus about Hiroki Kuroda earlier this week, his agent said today that he still has not reached a decision.  The decision is "very close," and may come by the end of the weekend.  The Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals have offers out. No word yet on whether the D'Backs will pull their offer after snagging Dan Haren.  I know they're going with the three-year payroll plan, so they can probably still fit Kuroda in. showad();
Mariners Leading For Kuroda?
2007-12-11 15:46:00
John Hickey has an update on Hiroki Kuroda this morning.  It seems the Mariners, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks are competing for his services.  Kuroda only wants a three-year deal, giving himself a chance to go back to Japan for the 2011 season if he chooses.  According to Hickey, "Kuroda's final decision will be between the Dodgers and the Mariners." Mariners: Hickey thinks they're in the lead with a three-year offer in the $33-36MM range.  The rumors of a four-year offer were false. Dodgers: They're at 3/30 and are considered the Mariners' biggest competition. Diamondbacks: Hickey says they're also close to 3/30 but on the fringes, which might imply his source was not aware of their recently improved offer. It seems Kuroda will make a decision within a week or so.  Maybe by then the starting pitching market will start moving. showad();

Johan Santana Rumors: Wednesday
2007-12-06 02:51:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 7:50pm: Tim Brown says the Red Sox had a moment of doubt, but they remain the frontrunner for Santana.  The previously mentioned packages apply. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 6:21pm: LENIII checks in on the interest level of the six teams involved. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:05pm: Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, indicated that the Mets are in the running for Santana. showad(); UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 2:48pm: BP's John Perrotto talked to a Twins official, and it definitely looks like the Meetings will end without a Johan deal.  Perrotto says he's still likely to be dealt before Spring Training. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 2:18pm: Ken Rosenthal believes the door is open for more teams to jump in, especially the Mariners. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 12:43pm: Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are trying to work their way back into the mix.  They're still viewed as a longshot without Jose Reyes in the offer, but at least the Twins are listening. Hiroki Kuroda Rumors: Wednesday
2007-12-06 00:59:00
UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 5:59pm: Per Scott Lauber, the Phils are out on Kuroda. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 10:46am: Todd Zolecki says Kuroda will visit the D'Backs, Mariners, and Dodgers next week, so it's fair to assume those are three of the four finalists. FROM 12-5-07 at 9:41am: Yesterday morning it was reported that the Mets had reached "Round 2" of the bidding for free agent Hiroki Kuroda.  At that time 8-10 teams were in on him. Now, the Kuroda derby is down to four finalists and the Mets aren't one of them. David Lennon agrees, saying the Mets were "drifting to the back of the pack" for Kuroda. My guess on the four finalists: Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Royals. showad();
Kuroda Wants Four Years
2007-12-04 20:26:00
Previous reports floating about had the Mariners offering four years, $44MM to Hiroki Kuroda.  Not so, according to MLB.com's Jim Street.  Street says the Mariners, Dodgers, and D'Backs have all made offers in the three-year, $30MM range.  None of the three clubs wants to go to four years on soon-to-be 33 year-old pitcher with no MLB experience. Kuroda may make his decision early next week, after his agents meet with the interested parties. Street adds that the Ms plan to meet with the Orioles today to discuss Erik Bedard possibilities.  Also, he mentions the rumor that the Mariners inquired on Ben Sheets.  Maybe it was both the Dodgers and Mariners. showad();
Odds and Ends: Cliff Lee, Edwin Jackson
2007-12-04 17:52:00
You know the drill... Nick Piecoro checks in on his blog.  Apparently the D'Backs discussed swapping Carlos Quentin for Cliff Lee before sending him to Chicago.  As much as he might've liked to it seems like Josh Byrnes couldn't get a starter for Quentin. Geoff Baker links the Mariners to Lee,  Ben Sheets, Mark Prior, and Edwin Jackson based on yesterday's buzz.  The Sheets one has since been questioned, since the Dodgers were identified as the West Coast team that inquired.  Prior could be part of a Raul Ibanez trade, but the Cubs are first focusing on Fukudome.  As for Jackson, the Rays would want more than just Ben Broussard. John Fay believes the Reds will have to part with Jay Bruce or Homer Bailey to get a frontline starter. showad();

Rangers Rumors: Rogers, Gagne, Hunter
2007-11-14 04:41:00
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has some new info regarding the Rangers' plans this offseason. Kenny Rogers has already had three separate stints with the Rangers, the last one ending with the cameraman incident. The Rangers would like to bring him back for a fourth tour, if the price is right.  One emailer speculated that the team also wouldn't mind an apology to management for the incident, also.  Sullivan says the Mariners, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets may also have Rogers on the radar.  Seems like Ned Colletti is letting bygones be bygones with Scott Boras.  UPDATE: Boras reiterated tonight that the Tigers are Rogers' priority.  He seemingly wants one year and $10MM. The Rangers have interest in another Boras client, Eric Gagne.  I think I read this in ESPN Magazine recently - how about re-signing him and flipping him all over again at the '08 deadline? Owner Tom Hicks and GM Jon Daniels had dinner with Torii Hunter tonight.  I heard they had the r...
Mariners Listening On Sexson
2007-11-10 17:03:00
Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson hit a painful .205/.295/.399 last year.  He's got one more year on his contract at $14MM, and most feel that he can't help but be better in 2008.  Mariners GM Bill Bavasi recently acknowledged that some teams have inquired about Sexson. According to the link above, one option could be swapping Sexson for another supposed bad contract, Vicente Padilla.  Padilla makes $11MM in '08, $12MM in '09, and has a $12MM club option for 2010 with a $1.75MM buyout.  So he has $24.75MM guaranteed left on his contract.  Padilla had an injury-plagued year but at least came on strong in September.  He's fairly risky in general, but the fact that he's crazy is an added burden.  Still, I imagine he's looking interesting to several teams. Another place to send Sexson could be Kansas City.  The Royals don't have a bad contract to swap, so the Ms would have to eat money.  I'm guessing the Royals would take a chance...

Rangers Rumors: DeJesus, Lamb, Millar
2007-11-04 04:42:00
Evan Grant writes for the Dallas Morning News, but he posted this column at night.  Go figure.  He's got some new info regarding the Rangers. As you know, the Rangers have had difficulty finding a long-term center fielder.  That's the main focus of this offseason.  The team has already shown interest in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, the top center fielders available.  Other free agents such as Andruw Jones and Mike Cameron appear to be in play as well.  Grant's trade candidates: Coco Crisp, David DeJesus, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Beltran.  We've speculated on DeJesus to Atlanta in the past.  With DeJesus signed cheaply through 2011 and the market at the position robust this winter, it might make sense for Dayton Moore to wait a year to shop him aggressively. Grant adds that Jon Daniels is considering some affordable options for first base.  They've already talked to Mike Lamb's agent and like Kevin Millar as well.  Lamb came up...
What Will the Off-Season Hold for Seattle? [Snave]
2007-10-26 19:52:00
When you are a Seattle Mariners fan lately, it never seems too early to be thinking about the off-season. Considering the many holes in their roster, the Mariners had a surprisingly good season in 2007, finishing at 88-74. That was good enough for second place behind the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the American League West. During the Hot Stove League of 2007-2008, Seattle?s General Manager Bill Bavasi will face the daunting task of finding better pitching, among many other things.For better or for worse, the ballclub continued Bavasi?s job for next year. They also decided to give interim field manager John McLaren the job of manager. McLaren named his coaching staff this week, keeping only the M?s hitting coach Jeff Pentland from the 2007 staff. New additions include pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, former major-league manager Jim Riggleman as bench coach, and ex-Red and Mariner reliever Norm Charlton as bullpen coach. Eddie Rodriguez will coach at first base, and Larry Bowa wi...
