Muslim sects trade threats in Indonesia
2008-06-02 12:41:00
An Islamic hard-liner in Indonesia urged his followers Monday to prepare for war against a minority Muslim sect and said he would not hand over supporters involved in a bloody attack on the group.Habib Rizhiq's remarks raised the threat of more violence in the country and set the stage for a showdown with Indonesia's secular president, who has called on police to crack down on Rizhiq's followers."We are not prepared for even one of our members to be arrested. We will resist to our last drop of blood," he said.Detective chief Lieutenant General Bambang Hendarso Danuri told reporters that officers had identified five suspects in the attack, and that "hopefully" they would be arrested later Monday.President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono - who has been under fire for failing to speak up against the intimidation campaign by hard-liners ? criticised Sunday's attack and urged police to arrest the perpetrators."The violence had sullied our country's reputation," Yudhoyono said at a news con...

Sects And Violence In Iraq
2008-04-09 20:46:00
(You knew I was overdue for a really bad pun, didn't you?)...White House flak Tony Fratto in the Monday press briefing (from here)?Q Also, how does this latest violence in Iraq and the latest uncertainty about what's going on color the Petraeus-Crocker testimony this time around? It obviously has changed the equation. I mean, weeks ago it looked like the surge was -- you know, had this pretty rosy cast, and now with all this renewed violence, I think it has changed the dynamics. So how has this changed the equation?MR. FRATTO: Well, I think we've thrown out all of the rose-colored glasses in how we look at Iraq, and try to look at it through clear lenses as to what is actually going on in the country. And what is happening there, I think what we are all seeing is that the Iraqi political leadership is trying to take hold of the security for their country. They took a very bold, aggressive action in Basra. It wasn't a overall success, but it -- but we learned a lot about what the...

Russian unorthodox: Alternative sects face discrimination in a post-Soviet
2008-02-09 13:37:00
The Latter-Day Saints, like a raft of other non-Orthodox faiths, including Jehovah's Witnesses, have been labelled "totalitarian sects" by the Russian Orthodox Church, whose criticism is frequently tinged with nationalism. In the past decade, the Russian government has severely restricted the activities of these churches, whose followers routinely face harassment, discrimination and even detention.
Did Insects Kill the Dinosaurs?
2008-01-13 07:33:00
By now, scientists have a pretty good idea of what conditions were like in the Cretaceous period, which started about 135 million years ago, and came to a sudden end 70 million years later, with the death of the dinosaurs. Or rather, they think they do ? but two new sets of research results suggest there's a lot more to learn. The first has to do with the period's cataclysmic close. In lots of people's minds, the mystery of what killed the dinosaurs and other species ? paving the way for the rise of mammals ? was solved a couple of decades ago: a giant asteroid or comet slamming into the Earth, resulting in a dust cloud that shrouded the sun, cooled the planet dramatically and killed off plants and animals wholesale. It's a compelling story, but plenty of scientists never completely bought it. The dinos died pretty quickly, they admit, but not quite abruptly enough to be explained this way. So alternate theories ? the dinosaurs succumbed to allergies, from the rise of flowering p...
Dinosaurs exterminated by insects?
2008-01-10 23:58:00
ScienceDaily- (Jan. 4, 2008) — Asteroid impacts or massive volcanic flows might have occurred around the time dinosaurs became extinct, but a new arguemet is that the mightiest creatures the world has ever known may have been brought down by a tiny, much less dramatic force — biting, disease-carrying insects. An important contributor to the demise of the dinosaurs, experts say, could have been the rise and evolution of insects, especially the slow-but-overwhelming threat posed by new disease carriers. And the evidence for this emerging threat has been captured in almost lifelike-detail — many types of insects preserved in amber that date to the time when dinosaurs disappeared. “There are serious problems with the sudden impact theories of dinosaur extinction, not the least of which is that dinosaurs declined and disappeared over a period of hundreds of thousands, or even millions of years,” said George Poinar Jr., a courtesy professor o...

Why Are Muslims Devided Into Sects / Different Schools Of Thoughts ?
2007-12-02 20:24:00
Question:When all the Muslim follow one and the same Qur?an then why are there so many sects and different schools of thoughts among Muslims?Answer By Dr Zakir Naik:1. Muslims Should be UnitedIt is a fact that Muslims today, are divided amongst themselves. The tragedy is that such divisions are not endorsed by Islam at all. Islam believes in fostering unity amongst its followers. The Glorious Qur?an says:"And hold fast,All together, by the ropeWhich Allah (stretches out for you),and be not divided among yourselves;"[Al-Qur?an 3:103]Which is the rope of Allah that is being referred to in this verse? It is the Glorious Qur?an. The Glorious Qur?an is the rope of Allah which all Muslims should hold fast together. There is double emphasis in this verse. Besides saying ?hold fast all together? it also says, ?be not divided?.Qur?an further says,"Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger"[Al-Qur?an 4:59]All the Muslim should follow the Qur?an and authentic Ahadith and be not divided among themselve...
Do insects feel pain? [Neurophilosophy]
2007-12-02 03:33:00
Using sophisticated techniques to silence or activate specific neurons, researchers from Stanford University have established that a simple behaviour used by fruit fly larvae to evade attack from parasitic wasps is triggered by a type of sensory neuron that is similar to the neurons which respond to painful stimuli in mammals. RELIGIOUS SECTS, CAVEMEN and NEW FRIENDS
2007-11-08 15:24:00
It's been a crazy two days for Childress county. The tired folks that did all the counting came up with three different final numbers three different times. Finally yesterday afternoon they officially said going wet passed by seven votes. Tuesday night it was 47 votes then early Wednesday morning it was 2 votes, now it's 7. Everyone has been saying that it's like we're living the Miami-Dade 2000 presidential elections all over again. Remember the story of hanging chads and not knowing who the president was going to be for weeks?I'm already tired of talking about last Tuesday's vote. Had I not promised you yesterday that I'd tell you about getting called a name, I would have skipped this altogether. I found the following quote in the "comments" section of this story about the Childress wet verses dry issue. Here's the quote about those who were against going wet."When you have a group of people in a community that do not allow it to grow the town will die. Alcohol is not the ...
New sects Islam teachings
2007-11-04 10:54:00
The existence of the new Islamic “false” sects can not be tolerated by the Indonesian Muslims, but only if it does not attribute whose name or the teaching of Islam or any other religion, “said the Muslim leader in Indonesia on Saturday. Director of the Institute for Research and Studies on Islam (FPPA) Amin Djamaludin spoke of a new Islamic sect in Indonesia, “Al Qiyadah Al Islamiyah used screws and distort the teachings of Islam and it here is the problem. ” “This is a bad sect (Islamic),” he said during a debate on the emergence of new sects in Indonesia here Saturday. “It would be different if it (Al Qiyadah guide and trailers), which is belonging to another religion as Islam or other religions.” National Awakening Party Executive Muslim Abdurachman said: “false” sects have long existed in the country and had often led to social unrest. “Rapid changes in social protection systems have led people (confused), ...

Getting rid of insects
2007-10-20 19:10:00
My banyan bonsai tree seems to be doing fine now. I found another yellow leaf today but that was the first one since Monday so I don?t think there?s anything to worry about. The advice I got from the various internet forums helped to put my mind at ease on the subject. I followed the advice given me about removing the moss. I took most of it away. There?s still a bit left. As I was removing the moss I became more concerned about the insect situation when I found a massive grub or larvae curled up at the base of the tree. It was about half to three quarters of an inch long and white. It was the most disgusting thing I?ve seen for ages.I have a fairly bad insect phobia and it took a lot of effort for me to scoop it onto a spoon and flush it down the toilet! To deal with the insects I first of all considered dunking the pot in an insecticide solution but before that I decided to try a less drastic remedy. I dunked it instead in a soapy water solution and left it soaking for about ten ...

Bugs and Insects
2007-10-11 06:05:00
On the ‘net, bugs have been really good to me. I had an insect article at Neatorama this week that garnered over a thousand Diggs. I’ve done two on insects at mental_floss. In real life, they are driving me crazy! When I get rid of one type of infestation, another takes its place. I got rid of the fleas. I got rid of the ants. I got rid of the houseflies. Then the fruit flies drove me bananas. I got rid of them. Now, the cement pond seems to have sprung a leak or something -anyway, all the fish died. It didn’t take long for what water is left to become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae. I can’t buy more fish til I find the leak and fix it, so all I can do is haul the water out of the bottom of the pond. Oh well, at least all these bugs give me something to write about. Oshiri Kajiri Mushi, the Japanese Butt Biting Bug There’s sort of an explanation here. There are no giant bugs under your bed, and here is why....
Robotic Spy Insects - Coming to a Town Near You?
2007-10-11 02:07:00
Little flying bug-shaped robots? It may sound like a theme from a science fiction movie, but they may become commonplace very soon. The development of such a device, in the form of a dragonfly, began 30 years ago as a project sponsored by the CIA. What held it back from full development then was its inability to handle crosswinds. Now, it would seem that we would have the technology in place to create a much better solution; and that is in fact the case. Recent developments in our knowledge of insects’ bio-mechanical flight mechanisms have assisted roboticists in developing tiny robotic insects. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have made a “microbat ornithopter” that flies freely and fits in the palm of one’s hand. A Vanderbilt University team has made a similar device. With their sail-like wings, neither of those would be mistaken for insects. In July, however, a Harvard University team got a truly fly-like robot airborne, its synthe...

And I thought, I would have a large relationship. Is however nix against those my mosquito. Those rushed but also still not only its stinging Baggage from revenge on me its cousins 4. Degree, the Mehlmotten, on me rushed. And this time really impudently.I wanted to bake fast bread from a baking mixture, because I was simply too putrid to go still to the baker. Child number 2 looks forward already to kneading, I makes the firmly locked bag up looks at me the flour more by routine and sees that there larvae are put down. The bag was too. Completely too. Which it means that the mosquito must have said their buddy of whole, completely far answer, so that in the bag hides itself, which I buy then. I do not seize it! Insects That Are Drawn To A Tropical Tree
2007-08-31 07:38:00
What does one imagines when the two words tropical tree are in conjunction with each other? A tropical tree is a beautiful remembrance of paradise. Tropical trees litter the shorelines of beaches near and far. The tropical tree is a symbol of Southern California, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and other tropical islands. One can not gaze at a brochure promising paradise without coming across one or two tropical trees.A tropical tree adds a hint of exotic charm to its external environment. Many tropical trees are the center of attention and will therefore compete with other plants. This is especially true in reference to palm trees. AS tropical tree is not only found on a tropical island or in a tropical area but also in a rainforest. A rainforest is known as a tropical rainforest. The tropical rainforest is home to hundreds of species of tropical trees and plants. Unfortunately, there are a number of insects that can harm a tropical tree. One insect that has many different types of speci...

2007-08-09 22:59:00
Himbos and Bimbos and Aussies, Oh My! By now, you know what to expect from the granddaddy of reality series, MTV’s THE REAL WORLD. And so far, the 19th season, which is set in Sydney, Australia, and kicked off last week, has delivered in spades. There’s the inevitable culture clash, this time around courtesy of 21-year-old Iranian Muslim Parisa, who comes off as something of a school marm when compared to such housemates as KellyAnne, a 20-year-old Texan whose audition tape features her warning, “When I want something, I’ll do it. It doesn’t matter what it is, and I don’t think about the consequences.” These two girls are the human equivalent of a bird and a worm… we know someone’s gonna get eaten. And things only get more complicated thanks to hunka-hunka-burnin’ himbo Dunbar, a 22-year-old Mississippi native who has both a girlfriend and a healthy ego. “Throughout my life a lot of people have been attracted to me,” he admits. Chateau Montsegur And Insects
2007-07-30 11:18:00
The region of Languedoc Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas in France. It borders the Mediterranean sea to the east and the Pyrenees mountains to the south. It benefits from an exceptional climate and is rich in wildlife,(which has pleased me no end). There are many historical ancient towns together with cathedrals , chateaux and castles notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar Castles.Chateau Montsegur is one of these mountain fortresses and as you can see from the picture it is in an amazing location and it is difficult to imagine how the materials to build it would have been taken up. The Chateau is also famous as being the site in 1244 where several hundred Cathars were burned alive. People still leave flowers there. I took the picture from the road that passes by the chateau and whilst doing so I noticed a pink flower that looked interesting next to a large log in a meadow. I went over to have a look. On this log were all sorts of insects, cr...

Insects and Bugs
2007-07-27 06:09:00
Every summer, I have to deal with vermin. Ants come in every year, and I know exactly how to deal with them. Fruit flies, too. But this year, for the first time, I had a flea infestation. See, there are mice in the basement. The neighborhood cats come in after the mice. My kids thought it would be nice for our cats to take thehm out for walks, which brought the fleas inside. I was the last to know, since the cats sleep with the kids. Its taken three rounds of treatments, each more expensive than the last, to get rid of them. Take my advice- if you ever have fleas, start with the most expensive treatment you can get. Ask a veterinarian. We used a combination of pills for the cats, drops for the cats’ skin, and fog bombs for all nine rooms. Knock on wood, it seems to have worked this time. I hate fleas.   Flies Mamacita is going low-tech to battle flies. The Nag on the Lake is very attractive to mosquitos. The Color and Des...
Female insects that need no males
2007-07-26 05:40:00
No rose grower need be told about the phenomenal rate of aphid reproduction. It may however surprise them that this is largely accomplished without male aphid intervention.During the summer months, without benefit of mating, female aphids produce vast quantities of unfertilised eggs. These develop within the mother, who each day gives birth to 20-odd exact replicas of herself, each with their own eggs already maturing inside them. And each of these is the mother of a further generation of females. In this way aphid populations expand rapidly. There are no males to take up food and space, and the females need not spend time mating. Every aphid reproduces and only cold weather, a predator such as a ladybird or a food short-age - or an insecticide - can stop them. Within days, the descendants of a single aphid can smother a rose bush.In autumn, the pattern changes, and both male and female offspring are produced. This generation mates, laying fertilised eggs that spend the winter in cre...

Speaking Of Insects
2007-06-19 22:24:00
Look at this little creature, or should I say rather large insect in the realm of insects. They emerged here in southern Wisconsin about three weeks ago after spending 17 years as a larvae underground eating roots. There's masses in the Chicago area and I don't have any here but just about 7 miles straight south in Lake Geneva there's tons. The 17 year cicada. Annoying but harmless and from what I understand rather tasty. Kind of almond like. Eeewwww! They make an erie sound and in unison too. They're cool looking in their own right with red beady eyes. I guess they're an Eastern thing. I find them fascinating. And when I say masses, I'm talking every square inch. They're about done now. They'll mate and lay their eggs and the larvae will stay underground for another 17 years. Why ? They must have been around for more than centuries. I wonder if there's any cicada fossils. Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.co-m/index.html for more horse stories, information and resou...
