Greater Seminole Heights Vision Plan--Oct 29th
2008-10-27 16:38:00 This is the product from the "form based zoning" discussions to revitalize the commercial corridors in Seminole Heights (all of Seminole Heights: southeast, south, and old). It is important for neighbors to turnout. It is important for the leaders of ALL three neighborhood groups to be there. If our leaders aren't there and neighbors also don't show up we have no voice in the city's decision making. ****Please join us for a Stakeholder Review and Open House which is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, 2008, 6:30 - 8:30pm (presentation at 7:30pm) at City Hall, 315 East Kennedy Boulevard, to review the draft Vision Plan and provide input on the Vision Planning exercises for this project. City staff will be presenting findings and documenting public comments. For additional information regarding the Greater Seminole Heights Form-Based Code project, you can visit our web site at: www.tampagov.net/ldc or contact us at (813) 274-8405.Thanks,Samantha FengerUrban Planner IILand Developme...
The Urban Puzzle
2008-10-13 05:10:00 (Illustration/Christophe Vorlet Graphic) The above graphic accompanied an interesting article in the Boston Globe regarding neighborhoods and gentrification. Click on the image to link to the article. I think it is relevant to so many of the issues that face our urban core neighborhoods. In reading it you can hear some of the same challenges we face in Seminole Heights. Commercial redevelopment. Blight and renovation. Economic stratification and who was here first. Preserving what first attracted us to the area yet trying to move forward without changing that character. Bridging the diversity that too often seems to be a bridge to no where. The generational divides between those who have lived here for decades and are not so sure what to make of change. Throw into the mix that the bursting of the real estate bubble seems to have taken us backward rather than forward. Those that thought we had moved past the urban pioneer stage may find this set back more than they bargai...
Publix robbed
2008-09-27 01:03:00 Police are searching for two armed men who robbed a Publix supermarket late Thursday night.According to the Tampa Tribune the suspects entered the store through a rear loading door at 10:20 p.m. The men ordered employees to get on the ground and forced the store's assistant manager and cashier to hand over money from the safe according to Lt. William Ferguson of the Tampa Police Department. In an update e-mail about the robbery to Christie Hess, OSHNA Crime Awareness committee:Major Bennett asked that I send you an email, for you to disperse among your Seminole Heights email tree as far as it can go. Major Bennett wanted to assure the residents of Seminole Heights that every available lead is being followed, and the TPD Robbery Squad is working diligently to locate the suspects. I'm including their descriptions in this email. Major Bennett personally went to the scene and met with management this morning - as he considers our "Publix" one of the sacred spots in the Seminole hei...
Bungalow Bistro Offers OSHNA Forum
2008-09-24 19:02:00 The owners of Bungalow Bistro have very graciously offered to host a candidate forum for the upcoming Old Seminole Heights (OSHNA) board elections. The following letter was sent only to the current board since the Graham's did not have e-mail contact for all of the candidates and has since been circulated to all of the candidates. The date and time have not been determined. My understanding is that there would be an effort to have a moderator not connected to OSHNA to maintain neutrality.Personally, I think it is great that a business owner is taking such positive interest in the residential community. It looks like a win-win both for their business and our neighborhood. The Graham's had moved from the neighborhood but still own and operate two businesses in Seminole Heights. Both are attractive additions to our commercial district.Thank you Elizabeth and Michael for your continued interest in residential areas of our community.

Giddens Park in the Big Picture
2008-09-14 22:34:00 Long long time ago...kind of reminds me of a certain Don McClean song. The City of Tampa launched the Greenprinting Initiative. A partnership of the city, the Mayor's Beautification Program and the F.E. Lykes Foundation to target 10 city parks for upgrades at the rate of 1 per year. The project was to be seeded with funds from the foundation which offered $75,000 for each park. The first up was supposed to be Southeast Seminole Heights' Giddens Park. As the program draws to the end. The first hasn't been finished. The second in Tampa Heights was to center on Lake Robles and Robles Park but it is still in the design stage. Third is Curtis Hixon Park, a downtown Riverfront park. Now the city of Tampa has likely spent over the last 20 years more money on that piece of land than all the other urban core parks combined. And the plans of Mayor Iorio will make it so if it isn't already."It's functional," Debra Evenson, the beautification program's executive director, said of the foun...
A correction
2008-08-30 18:05:00 In my July posting on the Hampton Terrace debate, I took issue with the the Creative Loafing article about the HTPRO spokespeople residing in the neighborhood (see the link). This morning at Starbucks Gail confront me and challenged my assertions and challenged me to make a retraction. I will gladly accept that challenge, if what I post is shown to be inaccurate I have no problem retracting anything. So I again went looking in regard to the property owned by Gail Davis. For whatever reason the property appraiser's site does not pull it up under her name but when I search Mohawk I did find the homestead under her and her husband's name.Gail consider this my retraction.
"His heart, home are in Seminole Heights"
2008-08-21 15:34:00 There is a great article in the St. Pete Times about Greg Barnhill."Seeing Greg Barnhill, professional looking in khakis and a button-down dress shirt, it's hard to imagine him as a country boy on a farm outside West Union, Ohio. That's exactly what Barnhill was, though, and he still has great regard for the small-town way of life. It's evident in his passion for the older homes and sense of community in Seminole Heights, where he helped organize the neighborhood's first home tour and has been integral in restoring its garden center building." Save the Whaleys (for Seminole Heights)
2008-08-11 15:01:00 The Official Unoffical Seminole Heights blog has a campaign for Whaleys to come to Seminole Heights, which New Heights Magazine fully supports: http://seminoleheights.blog.com-/3496517/#cmtsIn our search we realized that Whaley's has let go of their web domain (www.whaleysmarket.com). We have purchased it to save it from competitors' clutches and will give it to them free when they reopen (anywhere), BUT will include a FREE website AND FREE advertising if they move their location to Seminole Heights. We are still in search of a phone number for Todd Whaley, but have written him suggesting several locations in Seminole Heights, including Sem-Hi Center and the Van Gogh signs location currently up for sale. There is also a great "grocery store-looking" location across from Bali Bay that's for lease (although it's bigger than what they are probably looking for). Please help spread the word to Whaleys that they'll have a lifelong partner with Seminole Heights residents and New Heights ...

Seminole Heights to get New Library
2008-07-30 15:14:00 According to the Trib:""I'm very happy to tell you that in our capital fund budget, we have marked $7.3 million to replace the current library," he said. While the county commission's 2009 budget must survive two more public hearings in September before it is fully approved, he said he didn't expect anything to change. "We've worked really hard on this," he said, adding that it is possible to be building by late 2011 or early 2012 if the budgeted funds are approved.
Digging Up Seminole Heights
2008-07-16 03:15:00 12th Street will be dug up to replace the wastewater pipe.City Begins Replacing 12th Street Wastewater Pipeline July 11, 2008 - Crews have begun video surveying and mobilizing construction equipment for a new wastewater pipeline that will improve service and reliability for Tampa customers. The new five-mile pipeline will replace the aging 12th Street wastewater pipeline and carry about one-fourth of the City?s wastewater from the Sulphur Springs Pumping Station to the 26th Street interceptor sewer. The original 12th Street wastewater pipeline was placed in service in 1980. This pipeline has failed twice since 2004, causing highly disruptive and expensive repairs. Replacing the pipeline will help ensure reliable wastewater service for Tampa.Construction for the new 12th Street Wastewater Force Main will start in mid-August and is scheduled to be completed in July 2009. To minimize public impact and expedite construction, multiple crews will work simultaneously ...
Bring Serge Storms to Seminole Heights
2008-07-14 01:41:00 One of my favorite series of books is the ones written by Tampa author, Tim Dorsey, which features this great whacky lovable serial killer, Serge Storms. Serge loves Florida history and Florida kitsch. "All aspects of the history of Florida, whether political, ecological, or sociological, are of intense interest to Serge. He is often seized with a sudden urge to visit landmarks, although their significance is frequently personal or related to popular culture, (from the Wikipedia entry) In the novels he travels all over Florida undergoing these interesting adventures. The last book, Atomic Lobster, which I just finished reading, had a big focus on Davis Islands. It be cool to have Serge Storms visit Seminole Heights in a big way. But why would he do so? What history would he want to see and what activities would he encounter?Hillsborough High School - the oldest high school in Hillsborough County and one of the oldest in the SouthNicko's Diner - the booth where Elvis ate whe...
Will Seminole Heights Starbucks Close?
2008-07-02 03:00:00 Will the Seminole Heights Starbucks close? News is out that Starbucks will close 600 stores nationwide."Seventy percent of the stores to be shut are less than three years old, the company said." . . . . "Most of the 600 stores to be closed were opened in late 2005 and 2006". . . . "During that time, more than 50 percent of the new stores had drive-through service". . . ."Florida and California are among the largest states affected" . . . ."estimated the stores were taking 25 percent to 30 percent of sales from nearby locations".The Seminole Heights store fits the profile. However I wonder if its proximity to I-275 (drivers gonmg to work and easy visibility) and heavy neighborhood use will keep it open? Will there need to be a letter writing/email campaign to save the Starbucks?
Outdoor cats in Seminole Heights
2008-07-01 02:40:00 From an email:My name is Megan, and I have lived in South Seminole Heights for about a year and a half. As I walk or drive around this area and other parts of Seminole Heights, I notice a large number of cats roaming yards and streets. Many of them seem to be friendly, healthy and content with being outside, and are not bothering anything. The concern I have is making sure these cats are spayed or neutered. If they are roaming the neighborhood and are not fixed, there is a very good chance they are reproducing and having babies that are often unwanted.Spay/neuter has many benefits for animals, owners and the community:Good for your pet:- Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives (spayed or neutered pets live an average of 2 - 3 years longer than those who are not)- Eliminates or reduces the risk of a number of health problems that are difficult or expensive to treat, including several different kinds of cancerGood for you:- Makes pets less aggressive, more affectionate compan...

Problems with Noise in Seminole Heights?
2008-05-20 21:23:00 I am working on a story about the city and county's noise ordinances, looking at what agencies enforce what, who to call when you have a noisy neighbor, whether commercial or residential. I'd like to talk to some people who have had problems with noise. It would even be better if they had to call police or some other agency so they could describe their experiences. Thanks Mike Salinero County
Alessi Clears Property In Seminole Heights
2008-05-17 14:37:00 By KATHY STEELEThe Tampa TribuneSEMINOLE HEIGHTS - A boarded-up store at Nebraska and Louisiana avenues came tumbling down in about three hours Tuesday. But the plot of dirt isn't being developed right away."The building was unsafe," said owner and restaurateur Phil Alessi Jr. "A car hit it about six months ago."Property records show the building, which Alessi sometimes used for storage, was built in 1928.Alessi said he is exploring possible development projects at the site but has no immediate plans."It's just something in discussion," he said.In 2006, Alessi listed the property for sale at about $1.2 million. The real estate includes three parcels stretching along Nebraska between Louisiana and New Orleans Avenue.Initial discussions focused on a range of developments including shops, a restaurant and apartments. The Alessi family owns Alessi's Bakery in West Tampa, and Alessi Jr. and his father opened Alessi Woodstone Oven on North Dale Mabry Highway in 2006.
Seminole Heights Crime Watch Alert
2008-05-17 00:27:00 The crime rate in our area is continuing to climb. Everyone needs to do their part to bring the crime rate back down. The immediate cause is due to random ‘kick-in burglaries’ that are occurring during daylight hours. These thieves target homes regardless of an alarm system. The alarm system only minimizes the amount of property stolen. The police believe that the thieves are scouting for homes

Please chime in if you know more:-----------------------I wanted to get something out there on the blog. Has anyone seen the big yellow sign on the side of the Verizon building at the corner of Hillsborough and Florida Ave? I have tried to read it driving by and it says something about an application to build an ?air pollution source?. Seminole Heights Documentary Sold Out!
2008-04-19 18:12:00 From the Times:Seminole Heights: An Intimate Look at the Early Years sold out. More than 100 people lingered on the sidewalk, without tickets.Suzanne Prieur, who spearheaded the project, came outside to tell the crowd there would be no second showing that night. No way she or resident filmmakers Gene and Krissy Howes could've anticipated the interest in Seminole Heights history."Stunned is how I'm feeling," she said. "Completely stunned."and"Among those who didn't get in was 84-year-old Anne Ramsey, who lived in the neighborhood in the 1930s."That's my grandma! So how was it? Any reviews? Opinions? Thoughtful critiques?
Seminole Heights Documentay is a Hit
2008-04-18 11:35:00 Last night the Seminole Heights documentary was shown to an audience of over 1,400 people. Unfortunately the showing at the Tampa Theatre was sold out and many who came from across Florida were turned away. Efforts were made to accommodate a second showing but it was not possible. The film was a wonderful story of life during Seminole Heights' formative years. The film rekindled memories and
Tommy in Old Seminole Heights, One Year Later
2008-04-16 13:13:00 The blog has survived it's first year. I started writing on 15 April last year, the same day I committed to buying a home in Seminole Heights (first post). That's right, I haven't even lived in the neighborhood for a year. Surprisingly I've published over 480 posts and more than 12,000 different IP addresses have visited the blog. Thanks to everyone that continues to read my musings and updates.
Seminole Heights Publix Update
2008-04-15 03:01:00 The following was posted at the request of Chuck, the Publix manager and a Seminole Heights neighbor, to share news about our neighborhood Publix.Just wanted to drop a Publix note letting you know that this March we began our fourteenth year with the new store. We had forty years with the old store, so fifty five years of Publix in Seminole Heights!I am very honored to be your neighborhood manager and continue to strive to make you proud of our little store. Some updates of things that have recently happened and are coming up:1) The big yellow generator outside is large enough to run the entire store in the event of an emergency(hurricanes!). This will be very helpful to everyone if TECO has a major outage, plus good for Publix. We threw away $65 million in Groceries when the storms hit a few years back. This should be a win/win for everyone.2) The locking wheel carts are helping make sure you always have a cart available when you come shopping, plus they don't end up in your yard. ...

I'm scouring Seminole Heights for some volunteers. I've got the game plan, but I'll need some assistance. No, you won't need to quit your job in order to volunteer, but I do need some committed (preferably not in a hospital) Seminole Heights folks to put this festival together. Seminole Heights Bicycle Club
2008-01-15 00:02:00 During the next few weeks, I would like to gauge the level of interest in forming a Seminole Heights Bicycle Club. The goals would be to have scheduled rides on the streets in Seminole Heights; start bike rides from inside Seminole Heights of about 15-30 miles to other locations; to generally promote bicycling in Seminole Heights and Tampa; and to hold occasional bicycle events and festivals in Seminole Heights to enhance community spirit. A local Seminole Heights Bicycle Club would NOT duplicate any efforts of other bike clubs such as the Tampa Bay Freewheelers, which does a great job at sponsoring rides in the area. Seminole Heights resident Mike Limerick contacted me about the concept of a bicycle club, so we decided to put the word out on the street to see the extent to which people here in Seminole Heights would like to form a club. I have held several local bike rides in Seminole Heights and 15-30 people have participated in these local neighborhood bike rides. We have some of ...
Lost Baby Cat in Seminole Heights
2008-01-09 17:32:00 From an S.H. neighbor:I have recently lost a wonderful and loving cat. He escaped through my screen window on Christmas Eve night. His name is Baby because that's just what he is to my family. He's very loving and sweet and vocal...he calls me EL.I know that may sound funny, but if you've ever owned a vocal cat they call in their own sort of diction of cat language. He was born in my home almost two years ago. He was a sweet little thing and even though males are territorial he never wanted to fight with the other males. He has a few battle scars around the back of his neck due to his resistence to fight with other males. He would sit with me for hours rubbing his tummy and his chin. He is the most loving cat that I have ever owned in my life. When you lose a special animal I can't tell you of how you feel with frustration and hurt. They become part of the family and part of your life. I miss him terribly. It's so sad to think that Baby will not come back to his home.I am trying ...
City tests new zoning in Seminole Heights
2007-12-26 16:44:00 TAMPA -- Elizabeth Graham, incoming president of the Business Guild of Seminole Heights, recalled that when she decided to open Forever Beautiful, a day spa and salon at 5135 N. Florida Ave., "my vision was to have a cute, quaint business district where you are supported and loved by your community."So far, it's been a mixed bag.New businesses in the three neighborhoods that comprise Seminole Heights -- Old Seminole Heights, South Seminole Heights and Southeast Seminole Heights -- tend to be cherished by the residents. But onerous building regulations and speeding cars have made it difficult to develop the kind of business district Graham envisions. That might be changing as the city of Tampa tests out a new type of zoning, called form-based code, that relies on neighborhood input for decision making. Starting next year, the city will hold a series of meetings in Seminole Heights, asking, "What do you want your community to look like," said Cynthia Miller, director of growth managem...

Snel, a former Tampa Tribune reporter, is coordinator for South West Florida Bicycle United Dealers, a group of retail bicycle stores. The slow-paced ride started on East Powhatan Avenue, with a route that included North 12th Street, Park Circle, Central Avenue and a victory lap around Lake Roberta. Participants showed up with required helmets and an array of bikes, from a tandem to mountain and road bikes. The rides are designed to highlight areas of Seminole Heights and promote bike riding in the Tampa Bay area. The next ride is set for 8:15 a.m. Oct. 13. Snel said he's considering an 8- to 10-mile ride, possibly heading west of Interstate 275.For information, go to www.al...

Bigger Seminole Heights
2007-05-04 13:56:00 Seminole Heights is a bigger than life neighborhood. it's like one of the guys or gals in a room everyone talks about but that person always has something going on.This reputation also means Seminole Heights gets a larger footprint than it really has. Often times I will read a story that will indicate something occur in Seminole Heights or that Seminole Heights residents were involved in civic fight. For example: In the recent issue about the crematorium that wanted to move in to Florida Ave south of MLK Blvd, often times in news stories and blog article or comments people would say the facility would be located in Seminole Heights or that Seminole Heights people were fighting it. We were not. this faciity was located in Arlington Heights/Tampa Heights.Today in the times was another story described as being in Seminole Heights. It is a very touching story. Lessons in comfort - A student learns that for the dying, listening can be the best medicine."But when Robben pulled up to...
Carlton Skewers Seminole Heights
2007-04-25 13:54:00 Sue Carlton of Times wrote a column today that skewers Seminole Heights based on the Alex Zayas article. It's unfortunate that Carlton used as her source only the article and not the various blog articles and comments, so she would have had a more accurate picture of the issue. This is the neighborhood with the Taco Bus. We take pride in the Taco Bus.What we want is food. Good food. Good service. Good atmosphere. Okay, Actually we'd settle for adequate food, service and atmosphere. All in the same restaurant. We'd settle for adequate since a lot of times we get get poor. We'd like places wer ca nfeel comfortable. And we'd like some variety. If this neighborhood had an influx of English pubs serving bangers and mash, replacing most of the restaurants, we'd complain. Another thing is that Seminole Heights is a neighborhood of tensions, where there are many different things pulling different ways. It is a neighborhood in transitions. many transitions. Often a microcosm ... |
