2008-06-07 14:26:00

Although the bill — sponsored by Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John W. Warner (R-Va.) — enjoyed bipartisan support, the ...

Senate Watch: News & Notes
2008-06-03 20:04:00
Let's take a look at the latest news from Senate races around the country. Click here for our latest Senate rankings (updated: 5/20/08).AlabamaThough the party is expanding the playing field across the country, Democrats have gained little traction in their efforts to unseat Republican Senator Jeff Sessions (pictured). Sessions continues to hold a huge lead over Democratic challenger Vivian Figures in his bid for a third term. The Republican leads 62%-29% according to the Rasmussen poll, with 72% of the electorate holding a favorable view of the incumbent. Nearly a quarter of the voters surveyed were unsure about Figures, which suggests much of the state is still unfamiliar with her. After a close win in his first election in 1996, Sessions won easily in 2002 and appears to be cruising to another victory this cycle. Alabama is not expect to be closely contested on the presidential level and with Sessions holding a nearly 300:1 cash advantage, the chances look increasingly slim f...
Jim Gilmore wins Virginia Republican nomination for Senate
2008-06-03 17:29:00
Jim Gilmore won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate from Virginia, taking the nod with only 50.3% of his party's delegate vote over state delegate Bob Marshall. Gilmore likely actually had a minority of the delegates at the weekend party convention but a weighting process for vote counts allowed him to eek out the win.The former governor had helped engineer a convention process for the nomination vote, essentially forcing the moderate Rep. Tom Davis out of the race before he could get into it. The path to a party coronation went awry though as instead of Davis taking on Gilmore from the center, Gilmore was severely hurt by a Marshall challenge from the far right. The end result is the best of all worlds from likely Democratic challenger Mark Warner. A former governor himself, Warner left office with far greater popularity than his Republican counterpart and will enter this race with vastly superior financial resources and a more unified party apparatus. The operative question m...

Race for the Senate: A Change of Heart in The Lone Star State?

2008-05-22 22:26:00
Let's take a look at the latest news from Senate races around the country. Click here for our latest Senate rankings (updated: 5/20/08).ColoradoDemocratic Congressman Mark Udall (pictured) has opened a statistically significant lead for the first time according to a new Rasmussen poll. Udall leads former Republican Congressman Bob Schaffer 47%-41% in the race to replace retiring Republican Wayne Allard. The poll finds Udall besting Schaffer by 12 points among unaffiliated voters, a crucial group to watch in a state where Republicans still outnumber Democrats. The poll also finds Democrats leading at the presidential level, with Barack Obama ahead of John McCain 48%-42% and leading among unaffiliated voters by 21 points. Though it has gone to the Democrats just once in the past 40 years, Colorado is certainly a state Obama will target in the fall. Democrats have had success in the state in recent years and if Obama can boost turnout and attract independent voters, that could tr...

Senate Watch: Rankings
2008-05-21 01:47:00
It's for another supersized edition of our 2008 Senate rankings, as we look at the latest news, polling, and fundraising numbers from all 35 races across the country. As has been the case all year, our latest rankings look good for the Democrats. The party is currently poised to pick up 3-6 seats in 2008. Meanwhile, the cycle has been near disastrous for the GOP, who continue to battle an anti-Republican mood among the electorate. To make matters worse, the party failed to recruit top tier challengers to a number of races that could have been competitive this year. With limited opportunities to play offense and a growing number of seats in danger, Republicans will be looking at an increasing Democratic majority in the 111th Congress. How would you rank 'em? Share your thoughts in our comment section.1. Virginia (Open-R) [1]: What more can be said about the Virginia Senate race? Democrat Mark Warner (pictured) is as close to a sure thing as any non-incumbent could possibly be,...

Senate votes again against domestic oil production. WHY!!!?!??!?!??
2008-05-17 22:49:00
Look, I think Wayne Allard is a putz… an admittedly quick assessment based on limited info. But he got this one right: May 1st, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) joined New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici, the Republican leader of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and other Republican Senators to announce the introduction of the American Energy Production Act of 2008. The bill will address America’s soaring gas prices by focusing on common sense measures that will increase production of oil and gas in America. Allard specifically addressed the critical issue regarding the needed development of oil shale in Colorado as an important piece of addressing the energy supply shortages facing the country. “North America’s 3.7 trillion barrel resource of unconventional fuels exceeds by nearly 40% the entire world’s known remaining conventional oil supplies,” said Allard. “U.S. oil shale resources alone exceed 2 trillion barrels of pot...
