Separation Anxiety

separation anxiety
2008-05-02 18:10:00
My children are going to my mother-in-laws to spend the night tonight. I'm having major separation anxiety today! I'm not worried about my son. He's ten years old and has spent the night away from home more times than I could ever think of counting. My daughter, on the other hand, has never been away from home overnight. I know she'll be fine, but I still can't help but feel this heartache. It's going to be too strange walking in the door tonight after work and her not being there. I won't see her again until tomorrow evening when I get off work.

Due to my baby Clarisse’s constant demand for breastmilk, I have never left her to be cared by someone else throughout her first 10 months. Even during the day, baby Clarisse needs to be nursed to sleep. I bring her along wherever I go. Now that she’ll be turning one next month, I’m glad to be ...

Separation Anxiety
2008-04-05 06:11:00
I seems like here lately in my children’s ministry we have had some of the nursery and toddler age kids having more than normal seperation anxiety issues. So I have been traveling around the internet gathering up some very resourceful information that I believe will help me put together a plan to help the parents in my church steer as far away from that long road of childhood anxiety as they can. I receive an email blast each day from a Florida based ministry called Family First and normally I skim through it and then delete it, not today though. I love how God works he’s always right on time. So can you guess what the title of the article was? That’s right “SEPARATION ANXIETY IN YOUNG CHILDREN.” WOW! How cool is that. So I thought, maybe their are some other children’s ministers out there that might like some very practical advice on how do deal with this whole anxiety thing on a Sunday morning in a ministry setting. So if you are intere...

Pet Depression and Separation Anxiety
2008-02-12 18:49:00
Pets develop emotional bonds to their human owners and when separated from them, pets may suffer from depression and separation anxiety. There are times when it becomes necessary to be separated from a pet such as when having to be hospitalized or taking a vacation. As much as we may hate being away from a beloved pet, it may actually be a more stressful experience for the animal. Most people develop comfort zones and tend to resist change because it disrupts their level of comfort even when the change is positive. Many of us don?t realize that our pets can and often do react in similar ways. They also have their own comfort zones and become closely bonded with the people within their home territory. When separation occurs and the pet deeply misses those he is closest to, depression may set in. It is not uncommon for a pet to grieve itself to death when its owner dies. Pets can withdraw, become extremely quiet or in some cases even be a bit hostile when separated from the owner. If sep...

Separation Anxiety
2007-09-28 23:14:00
Very young children (those between 8 and 14 months old) often go through a phase when they are "clingy" and afraid of unfamiliar people and places. This is normal. When this fear occurs in a child over age 6, is excessive and lasts longer than four weeks, it may indicate that the child has separation anxiety disorder. Separation anxiety disorder is a condition in which a child becomes fearful and nervous when away from home or separated from a loved one -- usually a parent or other caregiver -- to whom the child is attached. Some children also develop physical symptoms, such as headaches or stomachaches, at the thought of being separated. The fear of separation causes great distress to the child and may interfere with the child's normal activities, such as going to school or playing with other children. What Are the Symptoms of Separation Anxiety Disorder? The most common warning signs of separation anxiety disorder include:An unrealistic and lasting worry that something bad ...

Separation Anxiety Arises when Mom Goes Back to Work
2007-09-04 04:25:00
When a stay-at-home mom reenters the workforce, a child’s reality changes dramatically. Children may experience separation anxiety upon facing a parent’s new schedule. But there is help. There are several things parents can do to make the transition easier for their child: Know that your influence is, and will continue to be, important to your child’s development. Know that children are often sensitive to their parents’ moods. Often, when children are stressing out, they want to near their parents, but when parents are feeling stressed, they want to have some space from their children. If mom’s response is made in a reassuring, unexaggerated and matter-of-fact way when leaving, such as acting like she is going into another room, then her mood won't signal to her child, "Hey! Something big is happening!" Do less talking and more walking. Often, parents drag-out the leaving process, turning it into an event with talking, extra hugging and coming back and forth to see to th...

Adult Separation Anxiety
2007-05-22 22:48:00
Anxiety can be brought on by many things. One common source of anxiety is separation from home or an attachment figure. It is often thought that a diagnosis of separation anxiety disorder is solely for children. However, there is growing evidence that an adult form of separation anxiety does exist. A University of Toledo* study found that first semester college students exhibited signs of separation anxiety disorder. In these cases anxiety or panic attacks were associated with separation from attachment figures. This anxiety caused the students to stay closer to home when choosing a college. However, it did not appear to affect the student's academic performance. Why is the diagnosis important? A diagnosis of panic disorder in this case would not assist in effective treatment because the focus would be upon the physiological symptoms rather than the separation events. *Seligman, Laura D., Wuyedk, Lisa A. (2007). Correlates of Separation Anxiety Symptoms Among First-Semester College...
Separation Anxiety
2007-05-17 18:01:00
If there was one distinct message, apart from the gospel itself, that was championed from the pulpit of my childhood it was separation. How often our pastors and especially our visiting evangelists would camp on this issue and give us a list of things to avoid. I suppose I grew up learning more about what I shouldn't do than what I should do. Like any good pharisee in training my identity in Christ was more about what I didn't do than how well I knew Him. Unfortunately, I see this phenomena still occurring in many evangelical churches today.Let me make it clear that I am not a neo-evangelical or an ecumenist. I don't believe in compromising essential doctrine. I will go on record as saying that I am personally disturbed by books like Ecumenical Jihad by Peter Kreeft. In fact, I'm probably one of the few evangelicals who is willing to openly admit aversion to Kreeft's reckless call for ecumenism. That being said, I think evangelicals have practiced separation to the point of re...

The Happy Dog Home ? Dealing with Separation Anxiety
2007-04-18 02:26:00
There are many behavioral issues seen in otherwise wonderful dogs, but one of the most common has to be separation anxiety. Many otherwise well adjusted and delightful canines become nervous wrecks the minute their humans leave the house, and the resulting separation anxiety can manifest itself in a myriad of ways, from house soiling to chewing to self-injury. It is important for owners of these anxious dogs to get a handle on the problem and address the root cause of the issue. One of the simplest ways to deal with separation anxiety is to leave home often and for short periods of time. Simply leaving the dog alone for a few minutes, while you walk around the block or drive around the neighborhood, can help to ensure your canine friend that you will indeed be returning. Many dogs that suffer from separation anxiety seem to fear that their owners are never coming home, and this causes a great deal of stress. Simply returning home, armed with treats and lots of scratches behind th...
