Serotonin linked to religiosity
2008-07-16 21:51:00
In a recent study, researchers have found that people with higher concentrations of serotonin receptors were more likely to be religious or the nebulous "spiritual." This is interesting because it would explain the connection between transcendent experiences and the use of psychotropic drugs and also the inverse correlation between religiosity and depression. Check it out for yourself:Quote:Of Serotonin and Spirituality Scientists see a biological underpinning for religiosity, and it is related to the neurotransmitter serotonin.  By: PT StaffSerotonin, the brain chemical crucial to mood and motivation, also shapes personality to make you susceptible to spiritual experiences. A team of Swedish researchers has found that the presence of a receptor that regulates general serotonin activity in the brain correlates with people's capacity for transcendence, the ability to apprehend phenomena that cannot be explained objectively. Scientists ...
Serotonin may affect our sense of fairness
2008-06-07 00:57:00
UCLA release - The neurotransmitter serotonin, which acts as a chemical messenger between nerve cells, plays a critical role in regulating emotions such as aggression during social decision-making, new research by scientists at England’s University of Cambridge and UCLA suggests. Their findings appear June 6 in the peer-reviewed journal Science. Serotonin has long been associated with social behavior, and low levels of serotonin are associated with depression and anxiety, but its precise involvement in impulsive aggression has been controversial. Though many scientists have hypothesized a link between serotonin and impulsivity, this is one of the first studies to show a causal link between the two. The findings highlight why some of us may become combative or aggressive when we have not eaten. The essential amino acid necessary for the body to create serotonin can only be obtained through diet; our serotonin levels naturally decline when we don’t eat. The research also p...
LSD and Serotonin
2008-02-10 21:50:00
Early psychedelic research on alcoholism. What did LSD do to the brain, exactly, in order to set off the fireworks that so fascinated brain scientists, hippies, and government spies? And why, after years of massive, unauthorized field-testing, so to speak, was there so little evidence implicating LSD as an addictive drug? Powerful as it was, LSD did not show any of the classic attributes of addiction, such as withdrawal or craving, although it was possible to build up a tolerance to its effects with repeated dosings.Another novel brain chemical, discovered less than a year after Albert Hofmann's discovery of LSD, proved to be a crucial piece of the puzzle.According to an early theory, the aberrant mental functioning produced by the tiniest dose of LSD was due to interference with normal levels of serotonin in the brain. In 1954, chemists D.W. Woolley and E. Shaw had published an article in Science strongly arguing that serotonin was the likely biochemical basis for major mental diso...

Serotonin and Dopamine: A Primer
2007-09-21 16:45:00
The Molecules of Reward Serotonin and dopamine are part of a group of compounds called biogenic amines. In addition to serotonin and dopamine, the amines include noradrenaline, acetylcholine, and histamine. This class of chemical messengers is produced, in turn, from basic amino acids like tyrosine, tryptophan, and choline. The amines are of great interest, because both mood-altering drugs and addictive drugs show a very straightforward affinity for receptors sites designed for endogenous amines.Addictive drugs have molecules that are the right shape for the amine receptors. Drugs like LSD and Ecstasy target serotonin systems. Serotonin systems control feeding and sleeping behaviors in living creatures from slugs to chimps. Serotonin, also known as 5-HT, occurs in nuts, fruit, and snake venom. It is found in the intestinal walls, large blood vessels, and the central nervous system of most vertebrates. The body normally synthesizes 5-hydroxytryptamine, as serotonin is formally known,...

You Jump Start My Serotonin
2007-06-14 09:15:00
And as my other self does the business; pushes the keys and fills the tank; I wonder whether perhaps we?d all be insane if it weren?t for the voices in our heads; the black and white beads of silicon reeds that connect our ears to inner eye via leads to the machines in our pockets stitched delivering the goods from creation?s microphone to cathartic limbic zone through traffic bars and subway stars; through mothers? arms and superstitious charms; voices uplifted to create or destroy our joy; our preconception; our childhood toys by rust consumed.Perhaps we are all insane and that roaring in our ears is no traffic jam but rather the void calling us to awaken from where we sleep at the wheel of that awful leviathan cliff edge bound. These thoughts bring heavy weight to the one who pays the bills and bites his nails in financial angst while his limbic self flies free on the wings of the shamans? wailing through stereophonic filtration and digital delivery from all that is mundane to all...
Serotonin and Depression: A Disconnect
2006-05-29 21:33:00
Well if anti-depressants, in particular SSRIs work, how do they help? Contrary to the ads you see on television, we don't really know. A recently published article outlines the issues. Although SSRIs are considered ?antidepressants,? they are FDA-approved treatments for eight separate psychiatric diagnoses, ranging from social anxiety disorder to obsessive-compulsive disorder to premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Some consumer advertisements (such as the Zoloft and Paxil Web sites) promote the serotonin hypothesis, not just for depression, but also for some of these other diagnostic categories [22,23]. Thus, for the serotonin hypothesis to be correct as currently presented, serotonin regulation would need to be the cause (and remedy) of each of these disorders [24]. This is improbable, and no one has yet proposed a cogent theory explaining how a singular putative neurochemical abnormality could result in so many wildly differing behavioral manifestations. In short, there exists no...
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor discontinuation syndrome: a randomiz
1970-01-01 00:59:00
Recent reports describe discontinuation-emergent adverse events upon cessation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors including dizziness, insomnia, nervousness, nausea, and agitation. We hypothesized that interruption of fluoxetine treatment would be associated with fewer discontinuation-emergent adverse events than interruption of sertraline or paroxetine treatment, based on fluoxetine?s longer half-life. In this 4-week study, 242 patients with remitted depression receiving maintenance therapy with open-label fluoxetine, sertraline, or paroxetine for 4?24 months had their maintenance therapy interrupted with double-blind placebo substitution for 5?8 days. The Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), the Discontinuation-Emergent Signs and Symptoms checklist, the 28-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and the Montgomery?Asberg Depression Rating Scale were used to assess somatic distress and stability of antidepressant response.
