Tribes by Seth Godin... and the Activerain Tribe
2008-10-07 14:51:00
Several months ago, Seth Godin started a new social network called Triiibes. He used the social network of Ning.com.   Becoming a member of Triiibes was by invitation only, and in order to get in you had to purchase an advanced copy of Seth's new book Tribes.  Since I love Seth, have read all his books and follow his blog, there was no problem in doing this. There are 3,637 members of Triiibes from every industry imaginable. Yesterday my book arrived and in it was a note; this was a FREE copy, not the one I bought. Seth told us to read it and then when the copy we purchased comes, to give it away.  Wow, viral marketing at its best. In Seth's book The Purple Cow, Seth talks about being remarkable, doing something different, standing out in the crowd. Seth sending out his new book Tribes and then asking us to pass on the book we bought is remarkable in my opinion. Starting a social network, invitation only at first, prior to the book is also remarkable. Seth is pretty...
Great advice from the master (Not me, Seth Godin)
2008-06-30 17:48:00
Seth Godin had an absolutely fantastic post on his blog yesterday about pursuing low hanging fruit. It’s a quick one, but eye-opening to anyone that’s ever struggled with trying to decide exactly how and where they should focus their business development (or overall business strategy) efforts. When you stop and think, it really is a lot ...

There are some people you trust implicitely. And there are some people that make so much sense, it’s not even about trust, it just makes so much sense that you take their advice. Seth Godin is one of those people. Maybe it’s because i’ve read all his books. Maybe it’s because i saw him speak, live, ...

Starting a Conversation: The Art of Comment Fetching

Photo by Mia Mia Everyone measures the success of their blog in different ways - but when it comes to measuring engagement, comments and trackbacks are what really count. Granted there are other ways of measuring engagement, such as Sphinns or Diggs - but let’s be narrow minded for a moment Seth Godin pointed out ...
Managing urgencies (Seth Godin)
2008-04-01 13:58:00
Do you have a plan? A long or medium term plan for your brand or your blog or your career or your project? You can have grand visions for remodeling your house or getting in shape, but if there's a fire in the kitchen, you drop everything and put it out. What choice do you have? The problem, of course, is that most organizations are on fire, most of the time. I gave a talk the other day, all about the unstoppable slow decline of interruption (traditional) media and the opportunities for rethinking how we communicate with people. At the end of the talk, someone came up and had very nice things to say about what he'd learned. The he leaned over and asked me to help him brainstorm about his brand's upcoming ad campaign, because it was due to his boss on Friday. Add up enough urgencies and you don't get a fire, you get a career. A career putting out fires never leads to the goal you had in mind all along. I guess the trick is to make the long term items even more ur...
Seth Godin's Internship Program
2008-03-29 23:55:00
Seth Godin recently announced on his blog that he was looking for interns, I read right over it but Brandon Laughridge decided that it was the internship for him. What did he do? Started an advertising campaign, obviously. Brandon created http://www.sethsfavoriteintern.-com/ and has done pretty much everything else he can think of to show Seth that he is the best candidate. As my buddy Willy wrote on his great site,  Brandon's efforts are a great example of the showing off necessary in a job application. Willy wrote, "instead of telling a company that you???re qualified, show them that you???re qualified. You can fake a resume, but you can???t fake something like a Search Marketing and Social Media campaign. If Brandon put on his resume that he was able to convince bloggers to write about him, it wouldn???t sound very impressive. If he aggregates all the posts about him on his site and makes it easy for Seth Godin to find them, that is impressive." I think it's...

Gracious Seth Godin Shows Up Knol
2007-12-18 19:50:00
In a social web, social skills are very much required. While Jason C at Manalo leaves a lot to be desired in that respect, Seth Godin has given us his usual and gracious response and created an insomnia page that is simply much better than Google's. There is one other factor overlooked by Squidoo's competitors, and that is: FUN!Squidoo is fun. It is fun to build pages, fun to be in that community, fun to read pages, fun to parody Squidoo, fun to build your little empire. It is a fun place to learn internet skills and to social network. Its a fun place to share, to help, to promote, to make friends. Its a real community. Its a fun place to care about and rewarding. That kind of fun is spirit, something natural that can't be duplicated no matter what size of a corporation likes your ideas. Corey, Megan and Gil are fun to be around, keep Squidoo fresh and exciting, and they care very deeply about the members of their 'community' and the experience they have with it.While...

Seth Godin Answered, ?When To Quit and When To Stick??
2007-08-04 04:47:00
It’s been my eternal question to decide when to quit and when to stick. Yesterday, I posted Jack Canfield’s answer. Programmers versus Marketeers
2007-07-11 08:51:00
Marketeers have been cursed for a long time by programmers now Seth Godin the marketing guru wants to have a word with programmers He has listed ten things programmers might want to know about marketeers now programmers are likely to disagree with it but the marketeers won't.The ten things are:Marketing is not rational. Programming is. Works the same way every time. Marketing doesn't, almost in a Heisenbergian way. If it worked before, it probably won't work again.Marketing is even more difficult to schedule than bug fixes. Marketing expenses are easily timed, of course, but the results are not. That's because there's a human at each end of the equation. Most marketers have no clue whatsoever what to do. So we do unoriginal things, or stall, or make promises we can't keep.Just because Sergey is both a brilliant programmer and a brilliant marketer doesn't mean that all brilliant programmers are good at marketing.People often prefer things that are inelegant, arcane or even brok...
If Seth Godin had hair...
2007-07-02 06:50:00
Okay, so I was chatting with an old college buddy tonight over Yahoo Instant Messenger and somehow we got to speculating about what Seth might have looked like when he had hair. Since we are both old photoshop hacks we pinged these pics back and forth. The one on the left belongs to my buddy and my attempt is the one on the right...I think the one on the left is a pretty convincing Top Gun...and I have no idea what I was going for.So which one do you think Seth most looked like pre-Kojak? Or if you think we missed the mark entirely, send in your own renditions! And if anyone has a real pic...we can put the speculation to rest.**Updated**We can put the speculation to rest! Can you find him in the line up?Thanks to Seth himself for commenting with the link to the image!
Behind the Numbers and Hype on Social Networking (Web1.0 vs Web2.0)
2007-06-23 13:47:00
Everybody wants to build a Web2.0,Social Networking site these days and get as many users on to it as possible but is that what you want just traffic then think again its the quality of traffic matters not quantity. What is the model do you intend to follow while building a website just placing ads and hope to start making money but not everyone can be a Google it manages to make so much money out of advertising because it is a behemoth and commands an enormous amount of market it may also be enough for bloggers but it is not easy to run a company out of revenues from purely advertising. Even the biggies are grappling with this question and the focus of Venture capitalists are shifting back towards sites which have a model of monetizing there traffic or to put it are more Web1.0 in nature.Recently I came across a hugely popular post by Marketing Guru Seth Godin wherein he questions the kind of traffic that we need to measure take a look So, here's y...

Seth Godin on Success
2007-02-13 18:18:02
Seth has a thought-provoking post today about how we measure ourselves against this idea of “success.” I agree that often we don’t put much time or thought into defining exactly what success means to us. I always liked coach John Wooden’s definition of success, and it’s what I use for myself: John Wooden on Success Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming.
