Sex Education: The Second Chapter
2008-06-04 16:57:00
Some of you may recall my botched attempt at explaining reproduction to my children. I'm ashamed to report that, over a year later, it's not going much better. If you'd been a fly on our wall, you'd be privy to the following conversation. (Incidentally, you'd also make friends with all the other flies, silverfish and earwigs that hang out on our walls. And then you'd all start a book club.).

GAAHHH! I hate that single-sex education (and its ensuing essentialism) is making a comeback! There's one middle school that does that shit here, and it will not be the one my daughter attends. The rationale here is that boys will have fewer behaviorial problems without the presence of girls. I have a painfully hard time believing that boys educated in an all-male environment are likely to view girls as equals. I have a seriously hard time thinking that they will be open to fully including women in their work environment or social environment. IMO, sex-segregated schools will pave the way towards a reversal of women's gains.Screw that. And screw using my tax dollars to do it.

Sex Education Should Begin At Birth
2008-04-28 17:34:00
One might think that in an evolved, educated, first-world nation, the issue of “sex ed” would have been settled long ago. After all, what could be more important than teaching children about their own bodies, and encouraging each individual to make responsible choices when it comes to reproduction? And yet, the debate continues to ...

Sex Ed Can Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy
2008-03-31 13:47:00
Comprehensive sex education may help reduce teen pregnancies without increasing levels of sexual intercourse or sexually transmitted diseases. So find U.S. researchers who reviewed data from a 2002 national survey of more than 1,700 heterosexual teens, ages 15 to 19.There is ongoing debate about whether abstinence-only education or comprehensive sex education (including instruction in birth control) is best for students. Study lead author Pamela Kohler, a program manager at the University of Washington in Seattle, and colleagues found that about 25 percent of teens received abstinence-only education and about two-thirds received comprehensive sex education. About 9 percent - particularly teens from poor families and those in rural areas - received no sex education at all. The researchers found that teens who received comprehensive sex education were 60 percent less likely to get pregnant or to get someone pregnant than those who received no sex education. Other results - not statisti...

Kate Walsh Talks Sex Education, Looks Guilty As Hell
2008-03-28 01:29:00
The star of Private Practice and fake doctor is seen here at the Stand Up For Real Sex Education congressional briefing in Washington D.C. and was joined by actors Blythe Danner and Suzanne Whang. Also at the briefing were Planned Parenthood doctors, as well as health education experts and teen peer educators. Am I crazy, or is Kate Walsh rocking the side ponytail here? I love it. Incidentally, "Side Ponytail" is also the name of my hypothetical Euro-pop band that I need to remember to start one of these days--once I've finally saved up enough for that key-tar I've been coveting. Debating Sex Education
2008-02-27 07:38:00
What is the most effective form of sex education? Abstinence-only education programs have become the norm in much of America. Its proponents argue that abstinence is the only sure-fire way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Supporters of comprehensive sex education counter that introducing youth to safe sex practices is a more effective method of encouraging sexual responsibility among teenagers. This hotly contested issue emphasizes debates over sex and morality that divide society.

2008-02-17 02:36:00
Well, single-sex education is a big hobby horse for the Right here. Which makes it suspicious from the start for me.I think it's largely an anxiety about young people's (hetero) sexuality. Those oversexed kids, you know. And probably something about boundaries and naturally complementary genders--things were just so much better when boys were boys, girls were girls and no-one was oppressed, apparently. But yeah, "separate but equal" rarely works out that way, so colour me skeptical.
The Parent?s Responsibility in Sex Education

Especially now that there is confusion as to how to teach human sexuality in school, the parents must be ready ...

Sex Education Found to Help Teenagers Delay Sex
2007-12-20 11:14:00
Teenagers who have had formal sex education are far more likely to put off having sex, contradicting earlier studies on the effectiveness of such programs, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday. They found teenage boys who had sex education in school were 71 percent less likely to have intercourse before age 15, and teen girls who had sex education were 59 percent less likely to have sex before age 15.Sex education also increased the likelihood that teen boys would use contraceptives the first time they had sex, according to the study by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health."Sex education seems to be working," Trisha Mueller, an epidemiologist with the CDC who led the study, said in a statement. "It seems to be especially effective for populations that are usually at high risk."Mueller's team looked at a 2002 national survey of 2,019 teens aged 15 to 19.They found teen boys who had sex education in s...

The Practice of Safe Sex Education Among Teens
2007-11-26 05:29:00
There are greater calls nowadays for safe sex. People now acknowledge the need to have protected sex with the rapidly increasing cases of unwanted pregnancies and the widespread of various sexually transmitted diseases. Some research efforts have found that kids nowadays have knowledge and exposure to the subject of sex at younger ages of about 12 to 14 years old. This is the age of puberty, wherein both girls and boys start to get really curious about the changes in their physical structures. Because of youth and lack of sufficient knowledge and information, many teenagers fall into practicing pre-marital and teenage sex. Teenagers think having sex at younger age makes them adults. Never do most of them think of the greater responsibilities and risks that come along with teenage, premarital and unprotected sex. Unfortunately, consequences and events can transpire before teenagers realize the danger and disadvantage of engaging in unprotected sex. Safe sex is very important. That...

Boston Legal and abstinence only sex education...
2007-10-17 15:46:00
This subject has been floating around in my mind since I watched Boston Legal last week and I guess I finally decided to take a shot at a post. During the show, attorney Alan Shore (James Spader) takes on a case from a young girl who is suing her school over their sex education stance. Apparently the fifteen year old girl had sex, is now HIV positive, and wants at least some of the burden of this placed on the abstinence only teachings of the school. Some times these sorts of politically charged (hypothetical) cases are in fact based on real life situations, while in some cases I get the feeling that the show is looking to prove a point. Since I have personally not seen any evidence that this exact case has been brought, I figure this example falls into the latter category. Certainly there has been legal wrangling over these sorts of policies in the school and I doubt it will end anytime soon. Now as is usually the case on television, the show can be written to make almost any argu...

Complaints About Single Sex Education
2007-10-12 06:00:00
Ok, I seem to be on a bit of tear this week about single-sex education.  Maybe we should call it a theme instead. So why am I returning to it again today?  Well, having written approvingly about single-sex classes on many occasions (not to mention championing their introduction in public schools), I seem to constantly be fielding variations of the same criticism, and I thought I might take advantage of the chance to reply summarily.  Fortunately, I have this recent Letter to the Editor of the Boston Globe (in response to a Globe article about single-sex classes in South Carolina) that more or less sums up the complaints I generally hear:“It is naive and prejudiced to assume a child's learning style will match a predetermined classification. Do all the males you know fit into the sports-loving stereotype? Do all your female acquaintances thrive on new makeup?“Yet in South Carolina boys are being taught pre-algebra with skateboard parts and girls are learning science b...
Single-Sex Education
2007-10-10 06:00:00
I often take note of experimental public programs that feature single-sex education—mostly in a bid to bring more attention to them and encourage others to follow their example.  (That is, I encourage public school systems to try to incorporate similar experiments in their own schools, and I doubly encourage parents to give them a shot.)  It is my hope that a lot of the nay saying and controversy about single-sex learning will start to diminish once people become a little more accustomed to seeing what good such classes can do.  Today, I have yet another program to add to the list—West Riviera Elementary in Palm Beach County, Florida.  The article describing the new program reinforces many of the reactions and results we’ve seen before: teachers able to find ways to appeal to students’ interests and modify their classes to suit their student’s learning styles; students extolling the lack of distractions in the single-sex classroom or speaking about how they feel ...

Well never fear, Im back and Ive got dick jokes, everything will be ok.So im having a conversation with a Swedish friend the other day and we start talking about school and then onto sex education in schools and I start to have a very strange flashback to my own experiences in the New South Wales public school system. HEALTH: No Sex Education Please - We're Indian
2007-08-30 17:22:00
NEW DELHI, Aug 30 (IPS) - Though adolescents are said to be at the centre of the AIDS epidemic and India has the largest number of infections in Asia, this conservative country continues to shy away from incorporating sex education in school curricula. As many as 11 of India?s 29 state governments have either banned or are in the process of dropping sex education from school programmes. Education and health are state domains in India?s federal system. Such a state of affairs recently prompted India?s outspoken federal minister for women and child development, Renuka Chaudhary, to remark that India seemed to her like ??a nation of hypocrites". Among major states that have banned sex education in state-run schools are western Maharashtra and Gujarat and central Madhya Pradesh. Among grounds cited were overtly explicit teaching modules and pictures that were too graphic. Private schools are continuing with lessons, but many have watered them down to avoid controversy. Other states expec...
Teenager Sex Education
2007-08-23 09:55:00
This morning as I drove my children to school, I heard this week?s ?Edu-talk show? on the air. The topic was ?The teenagers? sexual issue?. It reviewed an alarming statistics. In recent survey to local secondary schools (I didn?t catch how many of them), they found that:13% teenager students are sexual active4% of them who do not use any contraceptive measures.... The main show carried on talking on how to make ?sex education? more effective, in other word, how to teach more students to use more contraceptive measures. When asked why the students are more liberal and opened minded towards teenager sex, one of students in discuss panel answered: ?The media influence?. How true it is. The bombarded, massive ?media influence? on TV, movie, computer game and internet has subtly disarmed our moral standard in our society. Teenager sex is no longer viewed as moral disgrace, but accepted as a life style. The lust replaces the love, the very thing a virgin treasures before ...

2007-07-24 16:01:00
At last night's CNN / YouTube Debates Senator Barack Obama said in response to CNN;s Anderson Cooper's question about his views on teaching age-approrpriate sex education to children and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney's criticism of Obama on the matter, "Well, Mitt Romney supported age-appropriate sex education, so I don't know what the problem is."Well, I do. Romney either forgot he did in 2002, or figured that no one would catch him telling a fib. That's a big mistake in an Internet society. According to Jonathan Martin over at Politico.com, Romney "himself once indicated support for the same sort of sex-ed approach -- "age-appropriate" -- that Obama backs." Martin reports that, "In a Planned Parenthood questionnaire he filled out during his 2002 gubernatorial run, Romney checked 'yes' to a question asking, "Do you support the teaching of responsible, age-appropriate, factually accurate health and sexuality education, including information about both abs...
Romney's Response to Obama's Sex Education Plan
2007-07-21 04:45:00
After Barack Obama announced his belief in age appropriate sex education for children, Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, took the chance not only to attack a possible general election opponent, but to gain political points. Here is what he had to say:
Barack Obama is not a smart man Part 1-sex education
2007-07-20 09:28:00
First, ABC News' Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do." "I remember Alan Keyes . . . I remember him using this in his campaign against me," Obama said in reference to the conservative firebrand who ran against him for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Sex education for kindergarteners had become an issue in his race against Keyes because of Obama?s work on the issue as chairman of the health committee in the Illinois state Senate. "'Barack Obama supports teaching sex education to kindergarteners,'" said Obama mimicking Keyes' distinctive style of speech. "Which -- I didn?t know what to tell him (laughter)." "But it?s the right thing to do," Obama continued, "to provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools." Questions for Obama: Why is it "the right thing to do?" What does anybody need t...

Obama, Romney, And Sex Education
2007-07-19 23:04:00
Earlier this week, Barack Obama told a Planned Parenthood forum that age-appropriate sex education should be available for kindergartners. "You, as a peer, can have enormous power over your age cohort but you've got to have some support from the schools. Keep in mind: I honor and respect young people who choose to delay sexual activity. I've got two daughters, and I want them to understand that sex is not something casual. That's something that we definitely want to communicate and should be part of any curriculum. But we also know that when the statistics tell us that nearly half of 15 to 19 year olds are engaging in sexual activity, that for us to leave them in ignorance is potentially consigning them to illness, pregnancy, poverty, and in some cases, death," Obama noted. (Video link)Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney picked up on the statement quickly and told an audience in Colorado Springs, "I heard an interesting quote today from Barack Obama which puzzled me. He...

Salmon When the Rev. Evelyn Perez describes the strong feelings sex generates to the Latino teens in her church sex-education classes, she uses the metaphors of their cultures. Sex, she tells those whose families come from Mexico, "is like eating a jalapeño -- it is hot!" For her Puerto Rican students, she relates it to the weather in their families' homeland: "You know how hot it gets." The students, ages 13 to 17, understand instantly, she said. The conversations are part of the transformation of a faith-based sex-education curriculum designed for black youths. Sex Education Creates Storm in AIDS-Stricken India
2007-07-15 13:34:00
MUMBAI, May 14 (Reuters) - Moves to bring sex out of the closet in largely conservative India have kicked up a morality debate between educators who say sex education will reduce HIV rates, and critics who fear it will corrupt young minds. It's an emotive issue pitting modernists against conservatives in a country with the world's highest number of HIV cases at about 5.7 million, a figure that experts say may balloon to over 20 million by 2010. Biology teacher Thelma Seqeira infuriates conservatives in India every time she tells her students about masturbation, condoms and homosexuality. Seqeira is doing exactly what India's federal government wants the country's 29 states and seven federally-administered regions to do -- fight the exponential spread of HIV/AIDS with information on safe sex. "Sex education is the best way to prepare my students for adolescence and protect them from HIV/AIDS," said Seqeira, who teaches at a private school in Maharashtra state, western India. But ...

Sex Education: The First Chapter

The following conversation represents my childrens' first inquiries into the mechanics of reproduction: Zach: Mommy, was I in your tummy once? Me: Yes, you and Sarah both were. Zach: (staring intensely at my mouth) Did I crawl up your foodpipe and out your mouth? How big can you open your mouth? I curse myself silently for reading my kids that damn book about the digestive tract. Me: No,
