Shakespeare and Edmonton School of Ballet
2008-08-17 05:30:00
Having to spend much of the summer in Edmonton to take care of my mother and to attend to my brother?s estate, we tried to make the best of it by registering the girls in appropriate summer camps. The first was Tigana's participation in the Free Will Players "Shakespeare in the Park" week-long, half-day camp. It was well done and we appreciated the attempt to introduce Shakespeare to youngsters. The theme of this year's camp was "Shakespeare's Clowns", with the children doing bits from "As You Like It" (probably a good choice, since the other play they were doing was Richard III.) We all enjoyed attending the matinee performance of As You Like It, which was very well done; I was disappointed by the low turn out for this excellent production, but am told mutinees are often sparsely attended but that night time audiences were quite satisfactory. The second was the Edmonton School of Ballet's intensive summer camps. These ran for two weeks, culminating in a performance at the Meyer...

Romantic Tradition and Shakespeare (with special reference to 'As You Like
2008-03-15 09:23:00
The play ‘As You Like It’ was adapted from a romance in prose called ‘Rosalynde’ by Thomas Lodge. The play was in the romance tradition and at the same departure from it.Disguise and mistaken identity were also the techniques that Shakespeare borrowed from the romantic literature. These techniques brought confusion in their wake and also resulted in humourous situations. They also enabled Shakespeare to focus attention on the theme that in this world appearances are often deceptive.Shakespearean comedy owes the concept of poetic justice to romance literature. Everything according to the satisfaction of everyone --- well-rounded conclusions with only an occasional dissatisfied human being left as if to suggest that life doesn’t lend itself to such cut and dried solutions and cannot be seen in water-tight compartments. For example, Malvalio in ‘Twelfth Night’, Jaques in ‘As You Like It’.The individual additions made by Shakespeare:INTRODUCTION OF SUB-PLOTThe sub-plo...
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

Being so, three playwrights had the ambitious idea of putting all of his works melted in one single play together: tragedies, history plays, comedies and even a few poems. ...First: gather your fellow writers and go over the plays, trying to make at least one sentence for each one of them, cutting out all the boring lines – no exceptions. ...But since humor is a complicated matter even today, when different countries seem to have their own sense of comedy, imagine trying to make people laugh with centuries old jokes. ...The actors did what they know how to do with excellence, the public laughed, but I must say that as I read so many newspaper reviews on this show as hilarious and brilliant, I imagined something more uh, let’s say, classy. I wasn’t expecting to be brought to laughter only for the puking, farting, Beyonce and Britney Spears dancing style imitation and for some tired sexual jokes, but instead I was expecting bright jokes and inspired bridges ...

Shakespeare Sonnet 106
2008-02-29 14:21:00
SONNET 106When in the chronicle of wasted timeI see descriptions of the fairest wights,And beauty making beautiful old rhymeIn praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty's best,Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,I see their antique pen would have express'dEven such a beauty as you master now.So all their praises are but propheciesOf this our time, all you prefiguring; And, for they look'd but with divining eyes,They had not skill enough your worth to sing:For we, which now behold these present days,Had eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise. This sonnet addressed ‘to his dear friend’ is number 106 in sonnet sequence consisting of 154 sonnets. A number of his sonnets are addressed to ‘W.H.’ and others to a mysterious person, often referred to as the ‘dark lady’. W.H. has sometimes been identified with the Earl of Southampton, one of Shakespeare’s closest friends and patrons, to whom this poem is addressed. In this sonnet, S...

William Shakespeare - An Author of the Bible?
2008-02-10 11:56:00
Seems like an outrageous idea — but there are indeed some a strange coincidences involving Shakespeare and Psalm number 46 in the King James version of the Bible. Here s the first: William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564. This tells us that he would have been the age 46 during the year 1611 — for almost 4 months. This was the same year that the King James version of the Bible was published. Secondly, take a look at Psalm 46 from the King James version. What exactly is the 46th word? Psalm 46: To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. 1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the mo...

The Reduced Shakespeare Company (2000)

A.k.a. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). I heard an interview with Adam Long on NPR a few years back, and immediately added the film to my Netflix queue, but only now it arrived in mail. Damn, I have a long queue! The plot: the Canadian trio performs on stage 37 plays by William Shakespeare in 90 minutes. The summary: this is a hilarious show, an attempt to perform all known Shakespeare’s plays in under an hour and a half, engaging the audience (and viewers). The show is outrageously funny. It reminded me of a Monty Python’s Flying Circus episode where Shakespeare’s plays, including Macbeth, were performed using hand-, flag-, light-signals and telegraph without saying a word. Cracked me and my friends up. When the DVD stopped, everybody could not believe that was all - they wanted more. Well, the trio has also released “The Complete History Of America (Abridged)”. There’s a scene where they rap Othello’s monologue. The...

Shakespeare by Bill Bryson
2008-01-19 08:07:00
At the start of Shakespeare Bill Bryson apologises for the fact that there is not much to tell. Every aspect of the bard’s physical presence on the planet seems to be shrouded in doubt and mystery. We don’t even know what he looked like. We don’t know much about where he lived, or what he did with his time, apart from write and act. And, though we think we know a reasonable amount about what Will wrote, we know next to nothing about how his works were performed, alongside zero about what role the writer, himself, performed. So, having apologised for presenting a non-book with a non-story, Bill Bryson proceeds to fill two hundred pages with pure, unadulterated delight. The text provides context, detail and background. It is less than adulatory on the surface, apparently determined to stay within the bounds of the known and the probable. But when Bill Bryson does offer opinion, he reveals a clear and deeply felt love and admiration, almost worship, for his subject. The book is an ...

The poem 'Blow! Blow! Thou Winter Wind' :Blow, blow, thou winter wind,Thou art not so unkindAs man's ingratitude;Thy tooth is not so keen,Because thou art not seen,Although thy breath be rudeHeigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly; Most friends is feigning, most loving mere folly:Then, heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly.Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,That dost not bite so nighAs benefits forgot: Thou thou the waters warp,Thy sting is not so sharp As friend remembered not.(Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act III, sc. ii)The poem entitled ‘Blow! Blow! Thou Winter Wind’ is a song sung by the character named Amiens in the drama written by William Wordsworth. Amiens is one of the lords who have by their own choice come with Duke Senior, who had been banished by his brother. Amiens sings this song commenting upon the ways of the world, and human ingratitude which is more biting than the piercing cold winter wind. The poet in the very beginning addresses the winter wind...

'Fear No More' - from 'Cymbeline' by Shakespeare
2007-12-29 15:08:00
‘Fear No More’ Fear no more the heat o' the sun,Nor the furious winter's rages;Thou thy worldly task hast done,Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages;Golden lads and girls all must,As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.Fear no more the frown o' the great;Thou art past the tyrant's stroke:Care no more to clothe and eat;To thee the reed is as the oak:The sceptre, learning, physic, mustAll follow this, and come to dust.Fear no more the lightning-flash,Nor the all-dreaded thunder-stone;Fear not slander, censure rash;Thou hast finished joy and moan; All lovers young, all lovers mustConsign to thee, and come to dust. The poem ‘Fear No More’ appears as a song in Shakespeare’s play ‘Cymbeline’. It is a song sung over the supposed death of Imogen, the central female character of the play. The central theme of the poem is that death overpowers all and that all men are mortal. The speaker in the poem says that the dead must not have any fear about the heat of the Sun and the chilling ...

Dear readers,I am delighted with the great response to this segment. Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I hope you will return and share the various feelings and thoughts that the poems have evoked in you. I would also love to receive your suggestions for the next week's poem.Sonnet 55by William ShakespeareMy choice this week may seem as an obvious, even corny, one. Old Bill has become a standard and a beacon in our culture. The longevity and extent of his influence on all of us and his continuous presence in our modern lives often amaze me. However, I also feel that, to some extent, the meaning, soul and philosophical nature of his work is lost because we are so used to them.I have first encountered Sonnet 55 at a very young age and it struck me as presumptuous and boastful. With time, I myself became a writer and have come to find such confidence in one's own work as rare and admirable. Could it be that it was just that that had brought Shakespeare his eternal acclam? Is...

2007-11-19 06:26:00
My class managed to do a Shakespearian tragedy every year in high school. I mean reading one, not acting in one! Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and MacBeth. I aced Hamlet without studying, since my mother read it to me when she was in college. I went on to read King Lear and Othello in college, but that’s about it for my Shakespeare experience. Oh, I saw a few plays, too. But my most vivid Shakespearian memory is how “MacBeth doth murder sleep”... you betcha, when you stay up all night cramming for an exam! Dad was afraid to let me drive to school the next day, but a few cups of coffee kept me going, and I aced the test. It was the last exam of my high school career. Altogether, I'd have to say MacBeth is my favorite Shakepearian tragedy. I love freaking the kids out with long memorized passages, especially the witches' chant. And it's fun to let the dog out while saying "Out! Out, damned Spot!" Plus, I'm a sucker for a man in a kilt. ...
