Shanghai’s Finest
2008-06-06 00:45:00 Probably one of the best things that the internet has offered to us today is the ability to “travel” to other countries without leaving the comforts of our homes. It can bring us to places we’ve never reached before, can make us buy the products that are not in our local stores and learn things we’ve never known before. All we have to do is go to a website that offers this service and presto, we can already do these things. Just like shangby.com. The website can give you the chance to get to know Shanghai more and also get to know the best products that they are offer. Entering their Personal Shoppers feature can get you the chance to discover the greatest things from this big city in China. Reviewing Live Events at www.Shangby.com can also make you more learned about the different cultures, traditions and ways of life of our Chinese friends. Want to learn how you can possibly and creatively design your own jewelries? Or would you rather learn the right way i...

I cannot say it enough that my taste buds are tired of sesame oil, oyster sauce and soy sauce. But I live in a country where Chinese food is as staple as rice. But once in a while I chance upon a place that serves great tasting Chinese dishes. And I am a hypocrite if I do not admit that of all Chinese edible creations, dimsum is the best. It is also the easiest to imitate. Imagine all the stalls that sell siopao, siomai, sharks fin in all shapes and sizes. Read more… Thanks for subscribing to the PBS feed (P.B.S.)

Shanghai Museum
2008-05-20 16:52:00 Visiting museums should actually be one of the top must see of tourists when visiting new places. You get to sense the culture, history but most of all, you can check out cool artifacts. I am actually fascinated about museums but I seldom go because either no one wants to go with me or it’s really out of the way. When we went to Shanghai, I knew I had to go because the structure itself looks enticing enough. Shanghai Museum is actually a museum of ancient Chinese arts. Featuring a lot of furnitures, art masterpieces, old coins & money, clothes, I pleasantly scanned the interesting pieces. However I still like the feel of going to Forbidden city to glance at “how it was“. I want to walk the steps they took long before and imagine being there. (more…)
Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai
2008-05-19 07:42:00 The Jade Buddha Temple (Jade Buddha Chan Temple) is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai, China. As with most modern Chinese Buddhist temples, the current temple draws from both the Pure Land and Chan traditions of Mahayana Buddhism. It was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Burma by sea. These were a sitting Buddha (1.95 metres tall, 3 tonnes), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing Buddha’s death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Jade Buddha, donated from Singapore, and visitors may mistake this larger sculpture for the original, smaller piece. Chine is best place to travel. GPS vacation destination: 31° 14′ 36″ N, 121° 26′ 25″ E

90 Minutes From Shanghai To Paris (Ningbo)
2008-05-09 07:35:00 Well, not quite, but the Shanghai to Ningbo bridge is the world's longest cross-sea span and it cuts the drive from Shanghai to Ningbo from 400 km to 80km. CLB's own Steve Dickinson just returned from Ningbo, having travelled there from Shanghai to meet with a client who is setting up a manufacturing plant there. I asked Steve what he thought of it and here is his response: The bridge was truly amazing. It is not like a bridge. It is like a very long, straight road. Just like the Beijing airport: the impossible, done quickly and well. Query: why can they do these things and then not be able to put the right paint on a toy? There is reason at the bottom of all this, and I think pricing and profit margins play a role. Anyone else been down that bridge yet?

2008 Shanghai Qualifying Practice Report
2008-05-03 15:41:00 Two things were on everyone's mind during qualifying practice at Shanghai on Saturday afternoon. The first was the weather, the sun making conditions hot and sticky for qualifying, while torrential rain is forecast for the race on Sunday. This left the paddock in a quandary as to how to treat the session, whether to look for a dry race setup which may turn out to be irrelevant, or focus on qualifying as close to the front as possible, and hope it rains. In the end, most teams found a compromise, and split the session half and half. The bigger question, however, was whether Jorge Lorenzo could ride with the fractured ankles he suffered after crashing yesterday, and if he did, whether he would be able to keep his perfect streak of poles alive. Lorenzo answered part of that question in the morning's free practice session, riding 21 laps in 3 sessions, to see whether he was physically capable of riding. Though his times were nothing to write home about, the Spanish rookie showed he w...

Honda Doesn't Have Pneumatic Valves At Shanghai
2008-05-02 13:09:00 The speculation over over the past few weeks had been intense: would Honda risk their untested pneumatic valve engine at Shanghai, to take advantage of the added top end power it should provide? Now that practice has started, the answer appears to be "no" at least according to Spanish sports daily AS.com. AS asked Dani Pedrosa whether he had the air valve engine, and Pedrosa answered that they did not. "The engine isn't here. It's not ready," the Repsol Honda rider said. "I asked to have the engine once it is ready and working, so we don't have to put it to the test. For the moment, we will have to work with what we have. No deadline has been set, and I don't know when it will be ready. We were supposed to have it to test after Estoril, but there were a few problems which meant it wasn't there". So it looks as if the Repsol Honda men will have to make do with the conventional steel spring engine. That bike isn't doing too badly so far: Although the RC212V was 9km/h slower tha...
2008 Shanghai FP2 Times Day 1 - Stoner Back On Top, But Only Just
2008-05-02 11:11:00 Casey Stoner was the fastest man on track during this afternoon's session, returning to familiar form. But his lead was small, and he had Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa snapping at his heels. The lead swapped several times during the session, but the Australian World Champion eventually came out on top. Further down the field, several riders made remarkable improvements. Biggest surprise so far was Shinya Nakano's 4th fastest time, the Japanese rider really starting to find his feet on the Bridgestone-shod Gresini Honda. Some of the Ducatis showed an improvement as well, with Marco Melandri finding a couple of seconds and getting closer to contention. But it is Toni Elias who has made the biggest jump. At previous races, Elias had been running round at the very back of the grid, but the improvements the Spaniard found in testing at Estoril is starting to pay off, with Elias setting an 11th fastest time. James Toseland also made a big step forward, taking him up from 16th to 13t...
2008 Shanghai FP1 Times Day 1 - Rossi Leads, Lorenzo Crashes
2008-05-02 10:07:00 Valentino Rossi was fastest in this morning's first free practice session, but the big news was Jorge Lorenzo's crash. Lorenzo had a huge highside, more reminiscent of a 500 cc two stroke than a modern electronics-packed MotoGP bike. As a result of the crash, Lorenzo has fractured an ankle, and is not taking part in the second free practice session. Doubts remain as to whether he will reappear during the remainder of the weekend. The speculation about Marco Melandri has intensified, after Melandri finished the first session nearly 5 seconds down on Valentino Rossi's time. 146Valentino ROSSIYAMAHA1'59.906 21Casey STONERDUCATI2'00.3180.4120.412- 32Dani PEDROSAHONDA2'00.8190.9130.501- 44Andrea DOVIZIOSOHONDA2'00.9741.0680.15-5 521John HOPKINSKAWASAKI2'01.1531.2470.1-79 665Loris CAPIROSSISUZUKI2'01.2491.3430.0-96 75Colin EDWARDSYAMAHA2'01.2871.3810.038- 869Nicky HAYDENHONDA2'01.4191.5130.132 956Shinya NAKANOHONDA2'01.5131.6070.094 107Chris VERMEULENSUZUKI2'01.5881.6820.0-75 111...
Is China Going Green, Part XIV -- Leading Shanghai Environmental Lawyer Pro
2008-05-02 09:03:00 Charlie McElwee of the China Environmental Law Blog did an interesting post analyzing a Xinhua article on increased enforcement of China's environmental laws and on Chinese companies' growing realization that going green means making more green. Though Charles is an environmental lawyer based in Shanghai, unfortunately, he does not provide his own assessment on these issues. My own personal data base is not large enough to venture an opinion regarding enforcement of China's environmental laws, beyond stating that it is getting increasingly tough to secure Chinese government approval to form high polluting WFOEs (Wholly Foreign Owned Entities). I can also vouch for the fact that green marketing is on the rise in China and I have to presume this would not be the case unless money is being made by doing so. Certainly, this green marketing is more apparent in Shanghai and Beijing than in the second tier cities. What are you seeing?

Spiderman window washers in Shanghai
2008-04-29 05:59:00 Given the same pay, I'd seriously consider becoming a window washer if I am also required to don Spidey suits, like these guys washing the Sheraton Hotel in Shanghai. From the Shanghaiist: The idea came up in a brainstorming session with housekeeping staff, possibly taking inspiration from the human Spiderman who climbed the Jinmao last year. So far Spidey is receiving a thumbs up from the boys in the suits and guests alike, so if you live in Hongqiao, it looks like your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman is here to stay!

Shanghai Spring Rolls
2008-04-28 04:26:00 I didn't realize how truly cool one of our Shanghai lunch (and cooking class) stops was until I got back and read how truly cool it was. I did learn from Michelle, our superb guide, that the Whampoa Club is in a most noteworthy building, which includes Jean-Georges’ Shanghai outpost. It’s at No.3 the Bund and was built for an insurance company in 1916 and is China’s first steel building. Its award winning renovation by Michael Graves (his first project in China) was finished in 2004.A particularly interesting thing about this building is that it is the only one in Shanghai that is owned outright by a foreigner, Chinese-American Handel Lee. All the rest are leased by the government. A BUILDING may owned by the homeowner, but the LAND that it sits on is leased from the government for up to 70 years. CUR-RAY-ZEE!!!So after our walk around the Bund, we went to the Whampoa Club for a cooking class followed by lunch. Wow, what a snazzy building. Very Art Deco. Even the bathroom w...
Beautiful Buildings In Shanghai And Pictures That Should Have Been
2008-04-26 17:58:00 It’s not often (actually, it's never happened before) that I stay away from blogging for so long, but this Asian cough or whatever finally did me in. Just don’t get too close to the screen and you should be fine.My Shanghai adventures included a wonderful tour by an expatriate art expert, Michelle, who took us to see the Bund, Shanghai’s most famous street and district, and gave our little group an excellent historical, artistic and architectural appreciation for the area. In some ways, the history of this one street is really a microcosm of Chinese history during the late 19th and 20th centuries – from the Opium Wars through the Cultural Revolution to China today - and it is fascinating. We took a local ferry to get there, which I admit I was a bit apprehensive about. Gosh, are you lucky that I wasn’t blogging when we went to Hawaii and took a catamaran to Lanai. I hung off the edge during our 2 hour return trip. My kids pretended not to know me and H wasn’t much better...
