Another Green Party U- Turn
2007-10-11 20:16:00
Being in government can do strange things to people. Prior to the General Election the Green Party were very vocal in their opposition to the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military, the co-location of private hospitals on the grounds of public hospitals, the destruction of the Tara Valley and the use of electronic voting machines to name but a few. All of these policies fell by the wayside in their pursuit of the ministerial bicycle. Now the latest principle abandoned by the Green Party is their opposition to the use of incineration as a means of waste management. The latest announcement by Green Minister for the Environment John Gormley that Ireland will need two incinerators to deal with its waste must surely rate as another complete u-turn of Green Party policy. This ongoing failure of the Green Party to implement their pre election agenda must surely be an opportunity for the Labour Party.
This is more like it Eamonn

Today's statement from Labour Party leadership candidate Eamonn Gilmore that he wants the US military out of Shannon Airport is more of what we expect from our party leadership. In a straight talking, straight to the point speech Eamonn said "I want to see the US military out of Shannon and I do not want to see any Irish facility used for the conduct of the Iraq war" He can't be much more clearer than that.It is refreshing to hear this type of unambiguous statement from a potential party leader. Issues such as the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military do matter and we must take the lead in the campaign to bring this to an end. The Labour Party has been to the forefront of the campaign to end the use of Shannon by the US Military. And now with the sellout by the Green Party on the issue we must continue to lead this campaign. Keep it up Eamonn.
Crocodile tears being shed for Shannon - Heathrow flights
2007-08-20 00:35:00
Recent protestations by Ministers O'Cuiv and O'Dea regarding the decision by Aer Lingus to terminate flights from Shannon to Heathrow are nothing short of political opportunism. I am not surprised however to see government Ministers and politicians all running for cover following this latest decision by the board of Aer Lingus. Indeed words such as "rebellion and split" as reported in this article are not what you associate with one of the most conservative political parties in Ireland. So when I read of this latest "rebellion" in the cabinet on the Aer Lingus issue I take it with a pinch of salt. In the months preceding the privatisation of Aer Lingus the Labour Party repeatedly warned of the consequences of selling one of our national assets by this government. I don't take any great pleasure in saying "we told you so" when speaking of this latest debacle.
Shannon Airport - First real test for Green Party
2007-06-12 13:40:00
On 15 February 2003 over 100,000 people marched through Dublin city centre to protest against the war on Iraq and against US military flights refuelling in Shannon Airport. I marched that day along with members of the Labour Party to express our disgust at this war. Also on that march were prominent members of the Green Party. Since the outbreak of the war the Green Party along with the Labour Party has been consistent in its condemnation of the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military and about the role of the United States in Iraq. Now it is time to back those words with action. There is a unique opportunity now for the Green Party to put their mark on the proposed new government and to ensure that the ending of the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military is part of their Programme for Government with Fianna Fail. Or will this be the first principle to be sacrificed in the quest for the ministerial merc!!
Shannon Airport and the US Military - March Online Poll
2007-03-02 12:39:00
This months online poll asks the question whether it is time for our government to withdraw the use of Shannon Airport from the US Military. The phrase "troops out" long associated with Northern Ireland, has certainly taken on a new meaning in the last decade. Shannon Airport has been used by the US Military to refuel its aircraft for nearly ten years now. In 2005 approximately 330,000 US troops travelled through Shannon on the way to Iraq. It has also been estimated that in total more than half a million US military personnel have been through Shannon. All of this has happened without a proper national debate on the issue and in my opinion the Irish government has no mandate to continue its policy of assisting the US Military in this way. Cast your vote and let me know your thoughts!!
