Cleveland GM Shapiro Ready To Talk Trades
2008-05-24 17:20:00 The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Joe Maxse writes that Indians GM Mark Shapiro will soon be talking to every team in an effort to upgrade his roster. The Tribe have gotten off to a surprisingly slow start in April and May and currently have a 22-26 record, 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox. While Shapiro concedes that major trades don't usually occur so early in the season, he's already apparently ready to consider all options:"We will get on the phone with every team in the league, although sometimes a trade of magnitude comes down the road. We will explore everything at this point."The question then becomes "What could Shapiro do". The Indians' pitching staff has been fantastic in 2008, only allowing roughly 3.8 runs per game. But the offense has been lacking, scoring 4.1 per game. Thus far, Grady Sizemore has been the only starter pulling his weight offensively. 2008-03-21 01:51:00 Tim at MLBTR reports that Indians GM Mark Shapiro and Omar Minaya met in person yesterday. As I said earlier this week, this is the time in spring training when players are moved. The Mets want to make room in their pen for Steven Register but if Duaner Sanchez is healthy they just don't have the room. Omar has wanted Cliff Lee since he sent him to Cleveland for Colon. The Mets need a right handed outfielder and Franklin Gutierrez would be a nice fit. 2008-03-20 20:42:00 Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that phone buddies Mark Shapiro and Omar Minaya met in person yesterday evening. Any chance the Indians and Mets could match up for a trade? We know the Mets may be looking to move Jorge Sosa and/or Scott Schoeneweis. The Indians are currently trying to decide whether to give their last bullpen spot to Tom Mastny, Jorge Julio, or Scott Elarton; not sure if either Met pitcher would help. The Mets are known to be looking for outfield assistance. The Indians have two out of options outfielders: Shin-Soo Choo and Franklin Gutierrez. Choo is recovering from Tommy John surgery and may have to join the South Korean army. Gutierrez is the frontrunner to start in right field. Theoretically the Tribe could part with half of their left field platoon - David Dellucci or Jason Michaels. Dellucci is shaking off a sore forearm currently.
