‘Musharraf blindly toeing anti-Pakistan US policies’: Sharif
2008-02-03 12:27:00 Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has accused President Pervez Musharraf of ‘blindly toeing US policies which have pushed the country into its worst crisis.’ Addressing supporters in Taxila on Friday, Sharif predicted that the Musharraf-backed PML-Quaid (PML-Q) would suffer a humiliating defeat in the February 18 elections. “I had received three phone calls from the US president (Clinton), but ordered six atomic blasts in reply to five Indian nuclear tests. On the contrary, Musharraf gave up on receiving just one call from the US Secretary of State (Rice),” The Daily Times quoted Sharif, as saying. Those ruling the country for the last eight years have even plunged it into crisis after crisis, the PML-N chief said. “I hope that people of Rawalpindi will again show confidence in my party and reject the turncoats who secured vote in my name but later changed their loyalties,” he said. Benazir was inclined to boycott polls: Sharif
2008-01-29 12:23:00 Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif has claimed that assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto was inclined to boycott the general elections that were originally scheduled to be held on January 8 this year. Addressing a seminar organised by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) here on “the health future of Pakistan,” Sharif said his PML-N had decided to take part in the election under protest. He also revealed that he had held discussions with Benazir Bhutto to boycott the polls, but the late PPP leader had told him then that she was inclined to boycott, but her party had reservations. He claimed that had the opposition remained united and unanimous about the poll boycott, the decision could have forced President Musharraf's ouster. He warned that unless an acceptable rule of law prevailed, key issues like health, social upliftment and environment would never be addressed effectively or efficiently. Charging Mu...

Sharif's Boycott: Policy Implications
2007-12-29 00:12:00 Sharif says his party to boycott Jan. 8 election. This could help him take the lead in Pakistani democracy movement by taking such a hardline, but it makes you wonder, who will take over on the political front? I see two viable candidates: Bhutto's husband, and one of Bhutto's political rivals that I still cannot remember the name of.More importantly though, you can see why this complicates the U.S.'s anti-terrorism interests there. Sharif's boycott will totally undermine the elections unless a new, strong leader emerges from the PPP, Bhutto's party. Undermined elections = undermined Musharraf, and Musharraf will be weaker than ever.
