Coalition govt most likely in centre and three provinces
2008-02-19 16:25:00 CNews ISLAMABAD: In the backdrop of the election results thus far, no party could obtain clear majority and the alliance governments in centre and three provinces seem imminent, while the Pakistan People?s Party (PPP) has attained the position of forming its own government.Unofficial and provisional results showed that PPP has achieved the edge by obtaining maximum number of national assembly seats totaling thus far 88. Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) with 65 seats occupies coveted position, while the former ruling party Muslim League-Q could not obtain clear majority and it has bagged 37 seats. Among other major parties of the national assembly, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) secured 19 seats, Awami National Party 10, Muslim League (Functional) 4, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) 3, independent candidates and other political parties 27 seats.Among the provincial assemblies, PML-N has emerged as the largest party in Punjab assembly by securing 102 seats, PPP 78 and PML-Q got 66 seats....
Taliban rise due to failed Pak policy: Sherpao
2008-01-29 12:22:00 Former Pakistan Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao has said that the rise of the Taliban can be attributed to the failure of not taking “swift and decisive action” against them. “The police are scared. They don’t want to get involved,” Sherpao told the New York Times. Sherpao warned that there is a risk of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) being totally Talibanised, as the Taliban is well-financed, skilled at propaganda and paying political opponents to stay away from elections. “Unless you involve political parties, civil society, (and) religious leaders, this is not going to make any headway,” Sherpao added. He said about 450 innocent people had been killed in suicide attacks in the country this year alone.
