Bio Cafe + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2009-01-20 16:24:00
This is not really about their organic fare or their unique tofu inspired deserts. No, this is about their bagels and how they got them right. Any visitor to Tokyo will know that finding a bagel here, a real bagel for that matter, is almost impossible. Every foreign food has to go through a kaleidoscope filter before it can be served to the public here(mayonnaise pizza donut anyone?). Somehow, Bio Cafe in Shibuya has done the unthinkable in Tokyo and produced an authentic bagel! Not only that, there’s a huge variety of them as well, all made with really nice ingredients(back to their organic concept thing). It’s easy to find too, just walk up Spain Zakka over by La Fabrique in Shibuya, it’s just before the stairs that lead up to the crepe shop. Their flavors may sound odd at first, don’t forget, we’re still in Tokyo, try them and you’ll be amazed at how good they are. There are a few types, my favorite being the kind with the chewy outer skin and...
Shanghai Shokudo Fukuan + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2008-12-25 14:12:00
This is it. At long last, it took me almost 6 years to find this, but I knew it existed. Chinese pop music lightly playing in the background, chefs chattering in Mandarin, crappy decor, AUTHENTIC HOME-STYLE CHINESE FOOD. Don’t let the dirty alley location fool you, this is no hole in the wall to be ignored. At long last there is a contender to China Cafe 8. The menu may be half the size, but the portions are of absurd proportions. There were days when I almost felt like begging for real Chinese food in Tokyo. The smell, the busy kitchen, a restaurant full of Chinese customers! How I tired of ebi chili and mabo tofu, but NO MORE. It’s as though someone in heaven knew my desired meal budget and my desired tastes, and granted my wish. You’ll be hard pressed to find a meal that won’t leave you feeling stuffed to the brim for over 600 yen. That includes a soup, Chinese pickles and the main dish(depending on what you order). My first dish was pork fried rice, an o...
Shibuya 109
2008-09-20 02:02:00
?????Shibuya 109, or just 109 (ichi-maru-kyu, in Japanese), is a landmark for women between the ages of 10 and 30.The cylindrical building stands at a fork in the road just up a slope from the scramble intersection in front of Shibuya Station, in Tokyo.Within its eight above-ground and two underground floors one can find the latest fashions in Japan. In addition, it is a sociologists dream. On each floor, you will find many boutiques, each offering a very defined fashion look. The women who work as clerks in these shops wear the clothes of the shop--and the attitude appropriate to the look. The pinker the fashion, the cuter the look and behavior of the clerks. In the hip-hop influenced shops, the attitude was considerably cooler. In one boutique, the two women clerks flew around the tiny shop screaming "irashaimase" (welcome). They both were deeply tanned, short, cute, and were sporting completely blonde hair, short cotton skirts, and lots of bangles. Across the hall, in a much more su...
Japanese Fashion: Legs and Tattoos
2008-09-17 06:13:00
?????????????On a recent trip to Tokyo, I wandered around Shinjuku, Daikanyama, and the Harajuku/Omotesando areas and was struck by many things. One surprise for someone coming up from Kyoto was the number of tattoos, especially on women. In Kansai, tattoos are still a bit rare. Mobsters, of course, and the occasional college student or artist have tattoos. In Tokyo, however, tattoos were everywhere. And on all parts of the body.We saw countless tattoos high up on the thigh just barely visible under a skirt or hot pants, just next to cleavage, on the back of the neck, the side of the ankle, the shoulder blade, etc.The woman with the Mickey Mouse tattoo--it's real--on her calf was waiting for a train at Shibuya Station. Her exposed shoulders featured elaborate dragons. One sign that tattoos may even be a bit passe was that we spied a woman, in her late 20s, who had the telltale scars on her left arm of tattoo removal. She was feeding a baby in an Italian coffee shop.Another, more attrac...
Kim Kardashian At Shibuya Sushi Restaurant
2008-06-23 02:00:00
Kim Khardashian fans....I saw her Friday night at Shibya, a sushi restaurant a few doors down from her Dash Boutique in Calabasas. I almost didn't recognize her as she was au naturale and and dressed down wearing a black Adidas tracksuit, white t-shirt, black flip flops, and toting around her big patent leather Chanel bag. Kim is a lot more petite in person, maybe 5'3" and yes, she does have a butt and very beautiful. Living in Los Angeles, we all run into celebrities but it's nice to run into them when they are not made up for the cameras. I guess she was in town for her best friend's Allison's bridal shower. And by the way, her Bentley convertible is looking brand new again after the little incident with the motorcycle. There were 2 different groups of people taking photos of her modified car in the parking lot. Who are your celebrity run-ins lately? Do share! My favorite celebrity that I've seen in person is Jennifer Lopez - she's stunning.
Shibuya Crossing
2008-05-11 05:36:00
I was out at Shibuya Crossing the other day and as usual i had my camera with me. Just as well on this occasion, it was hard to miss the group of guys forming on the station side of the crossing, faces painted brown, with gold headwear on ready to do something interesting, so it seemed anyway. They ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Shibuya Crossing", url: "http://neilduckett.com/shibuya--crossing/" });

VIRON + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2008-04-29 13:20:00
Having eaten only the breakfast and never bothering with their lunch or bakery should set off warning signals that I should stop writing his review here and now. That said, there’s really no stopping me from gushing about possibly THE best breakfast in Tokyo, hands-down-try-to-beat-this. Viron’s breakfast is a test. How long can you muster restraint before stuffing yourself stupid with infinite French breads and jams and a bottomless cup of coffee? Leave your carb diet at the door, there’s no turning back once seated in their little upstairs French cafe. Don’t even bother with the alternative breakfast offering, you eat a salad and an egg at the Wendy’s next door, you came here for the 1260 yen bread and spread deal. Viron’s staff will first bring over a giant basket of croissants, buns, and sweet rolls from which you can select two. Then they sit a basket of French breads of varying grain which you are allowed an infinite supply of. Once the brea...
Kuritorisu
2008-04-19 06:26:00
????It?s a balmy spring Wednesday night outside. I?m in Kuri to Risu (?Chestnut and Squirrel?), a lesbian night held every Wednesday at a bar in Shibuya (kuri-to-risu being the katakana form of the word 'clitoris'). I?m talking to Fumi-san, a through-and-through Tokyoite in the sense of knowing what?s what. Pizzacato Five. Wolfgang Tillmans. A soul DJ by the name of Takahashi. How China?s mentality is too staid to really lead the 21st century and how it will be a conglomeration of China, the US, India and the EU. How places such as Canada, Scandinavia, and New Zealand, where I?m from, have been identified from statistical research as the very places where the degree of social freedom breeds the kind of creativity that having a voice in the 21st century will require.I?ve had a couple of bourbons and am onto a G&T Vicki bought me. She ordered the barwoman?s special ?Chuocide,? a reference to Tokyo?s most suicide-prone Chuo railway line. There?s a little African boy running round...

Shibuya-kei
2007-12-11 21:23:00

Japanese gal chronicles: Para para and the Shibuya connection
2007-10-11 10:07:00
The Japanese gal (gyaru) subculture has its roots in Shibuya. Young ladies darken their skin and apply various kinds of thick make-up on to their faces. According to this video, this culture of skin darkening has nothing to do with these girls trying to imitate black or African culture. Anyway, groups of gals usually meet ...

Shibuya and Karaoke and Thai
2007-07-30 11:12:00
The next day in Tokyo. Slowly arose in such a way which like atmosphere. Because air was not so damp, no, the city won at a character. Tokyo is not large as, as always accepted. If one speaks of Tokyo, then one means rather the accumulation of grown together cities to a large urbanen metropolis. Thus there are many city centres, so that it light, as if the center of Tokyo is eternally large. Thus there are many new large multistoried buildings however between them many small older little houses and business, which work a little gammelig. Between them again many small and large temples and shrines. Most modern architecture, adventurous house forms beside old traditional huts. One knew the small place, which see tiny area of the course or of bridges, then again shopping centres, with 11 floors. It was the day, on which I the first time mean foot into a Karaoke bar set. The bar was large for Japanese conditions. Not there to alltoo much guests were. Somebody sang already, it sounded on...

[Download] - Olivia Lufkin Live at Shibuya O-West
2007-02-14 22:02:00
It was held on 25th July. Douzo.

saya + SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2007-02-11 08:06:00
When you travel from city to city, no matter where you are in the world, there will always be chain restaurants ranging from cheap to luxury. You will consistently find the same bookstores, cafes, and blinking lights. With so many similarities, what truly makes a city special? Not so much the degree or size of these chain establishments, but the hidden gems hiding in their shadows. Just a short stroll across the street from JR Shibuya station will take you to a spot untouched by the busy commerce of Shibuya crossing. Down this little alley, huddled together, are tiny bars and restaurants offering respite from the relentless push of modernization. Along these few lantern lit streets are treasures long kept secret and hidden by their low key exteriors. Within these little establishments you’ll find Japanese standards like yakitori(grilled chicken skewers), oden(assorted boiled tofu, meat and vegetable dishes), and plenty of sake. Recently though, a few newcomers have arrived wit...
Hong Kong Roji+ SHIBUYA, TOKYO
2007-02-03 05:41:00
Whether a ploy to avoid too much attention or just too busy to care, Hong Kong Roji does not exude either class or cleanliness. It does, however, exude a delightful aroma of classic Chinese fried noodles and juicy steamed dumplings into the street to catch pedestrians passing by. I stumbled upon this restaurant entirely by accident. Simply looking for a quick bite, I discovered what would become a monthly habit of great fried noodles and hot rice soup. Hong Kong Roji has two locations, both in the Shibuya area, cozy and little. Expect to wait in a short line around dinner time. You’ll notice immediately that all of the staff speak Chinese to eachother, the first good sign of an authentic(well, semi-authentic) Chinese restaurant. Hinderances to it becoming truly authentic are the use of Japanese rice rather than Chinese rice in their dishes. Though not completely detrimental, I would prefer actual Chinese rice with it’s dry, flavor absorbing texture rather than the sweet ...
