Bell Peppers - Shimla Baigan Bhartha
2008-05-14 05:46:00
Shimla Capsicum Bhartha, originally uploaded by brinku11.You know, I've got to tell you, I think we Indians should patent the word capsicum, I have so gotten used to saying, "bell pepper" but a part of me longs for that somewhat small slightly spicer and really flavorful capsicum. But, on the other hand, I love colorful red and yellow peppers which you do not find so readily in India. A red bell pepper is amazingly flavorful, especially roasted. Of course, nothing like a smoked eggplant! Mix them together, you get a scintilating mix of taste and flavor.Try this luscious bhartha, which is very simple, just takes a little time to roast the vegetables.Shimla Baigan BharthaServes 4Ingredients2 medium eggplants1 green bell pepper1 red bell pepper2 tbsp oil1 tsp cumin seeds1 onion finely chopped2 tsp very finely shredded ginger1 tsp minced garlic1 tsp minced green chillies1 tsp salt1 tsp cumin-coriander powder2 tbsp tomato paste1 cup frozen green peas (thawed)1/2 cup chopped cilantro leav...

Bharwan Shimla Mirch, or Stuffed Bell Peppers simmered in a rich creamy sauce is a cherished entry on an Indian restaurant menu, and is indeed a favorite with many of us! The perfectly grilled bell-peppers, stuffed with vegetables and sauces inspired me to try my own verison at home. And believe me, I couldn't have been more surprised when I saw that the end product was just as delicious, if not better-tasting that the one we eat at the restaurants! I used spiced onion and potato filling, then... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

Even while her home in Mumbai is being re-constructed, Preity Zinta is dreaming of building a house in Shimla. ?I always wanted a family home in my home town. I?m now going to build a house there. The older one is in a locality that?s so crowded I don?t recognise it any more. Earlier it was just our house and lots of trees,? she shares. Preity has an ancestral land which she has been planning to use to build a dream house. ?Now?s the time to do it. Build a farm house where my kids and my brother?s kids will grow up. It?s a little away from Shimla near the golf course. I want to make it completely eco-friendly. I?m also trying to buy an eco-friendly car. Look at the fumes in Mumbai.??Where does one go in Mumbai to relax? The other Sunday when I had a day off I had no place to go! Either you go to a restaurant or a movie. And it takes so long to get anywhere! It?s very frustrating. When I want to unwind I go out of the country. We need more entertainment and sports centers in Mumbai. ...

Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla gets season’ first snowfall
2007-12-11 08:09:00
The Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla including some other parts received the season’’s first snowfall Monday, as severe cold intensified its grip across the state. The snowfall is considered early as in recent years Shimla has been receiving its first snowfall in January. The tribal areas reeled under sub-zero temperatures as intermittent snow continued to lash the region for the second day today. Kalpa, the district headquarters of Kinnaur, recorded a minimum of - 4.1°C, while Patsio in Lahaul-Spiti shivered at -8.5°C. The rain upset the campaigning for Assembly elections as the leaders could not take the aerial route because of cloudy weather. According to the local meteorological office, the region is likely to receive more snow over the next 72 hours. The snow, which is considered as white manure for apple orchards, brought cheers to the apple growers as it will help provide the minimum chilling hours necessary for a good apple crop.

GUEST COLUMN - The homely Spring fields of Shimla
2007-05-28 11:40:00
By Swarup Kar Purkayastha February 2002. As the cab drives through the narrow, winding roads of Shimla, to Springfields Hotel, it removes us from the hustle-bustle of the city and drifts one into a relatively peaceful realm. It is so easy to get lost as the place opens up and takes one in the warmth of its embrace. Imposing hills climbing high to kiss the sky, even as blankets of dense, white clouds swim in its vast emptiness. The sun is trying to break through the grey, morning mist from behind the hills. And yet it's not easy to get lost. The world, its smell, touches seep into the atmosphere as the city gets ready to wake up to the call of the day. The cold breeze brushes one's heart, birds chirp and kids queue in for schools. The cab screeches to a halt at the threshold of the hotel, situated at the outskirt of the city. I looked out of the window of my car confused as the hotel looks more like a residence. There is no sign of a hotel. No one at the gate. On the other side, th...
