2008-04-07 11:30:00 Martin indeed scores easy!Those of you who are into anthropology might be enticed by this falsely advertised Martin Scorsese flick as a Rolling Stones documentary.Don't get me wrong, I love The Stones. I adore The Jagger. I think he's the coolest granddad on Earth. I might be convinced to get jiggy with him given the appropriate amount of alcohol. But I digress.Shine A Light is no documentary. It's a two hours concert in some small venue in New York, with about 20 songs played live by the band. There is a small intro, where we get to see another famous musician, Mr. Clinton avec La Madame, who happened to pass by the backstage. From time to time there are some short intermezzos with pieces of interview given by the lads in the seventies, but that's all you get. I honestly hoped it would be something like No Direction At Home, the real documentary about Bob Dylan. No way!I saw the Stones live and I had the time of my life. 2008-03-28 03:37:00 I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to Shine A Light or not. As you can see from my lack of updates, I may have burned out on the Stones temporarily. Also, the madness surrounding the Led Zeppelin reunion last fall sent me into a vortex of Zeppelin material from which I am only now emerging. So having burned out on my obsessive tracking of the Bigger Bang tour, I'm uncertain about revisiting it, although the Beacon shows filmed for Shine A Light are clearly out of the ordinary. First of all, the setlist is something we haven't seen in decades. Because I am rather oblivious to the illegality of it all, I downloaded the soundtrack this afternoon and had a listen. I need more time to digest it though. It sounded totally different than Live Licks, but maybe this is a good thing? More ragged, more strung out. On the other hand, I had a creeping fear that perhaps the band itself sounded played out. Is it possible? I need more time. In any case, I'll be out next weekend to see the fil...

No lip syncing, no tape loops, no guys walking around pumping their fists, and saying "What?" sporadically. I haven't thought of the Stones as a contemporary band, in years. Well, Martin Scorsese has filmed a series of small concerts, with just the Stones and some special guests. Shine A Light looks promising. Marty did a great job with the Last Waltz, and the Blues series on PBS, so I think he'll deliver on this. It's nice to be reminded that there's a reason that the Stones still tour, and it's not (all) about money. They can still rock. That's refreshing in this day and age. The Stones are honest in their music. Take it or leave it, is their attitude, still, five decades later... and they can still pull it off.
