The Bush Terrorism? Strange Tale of Shiraz Explosion
2008-05-29 18:17:00 The Bush Administration has been building a black operations network in Iran since before the Iraq war, now it has made the news. Informed Comment: Global Affairs ...it may be that the Iranian government has decided that the public statement taking responsibility for an attack that killed 14 people and injured many more provides it with enough leverage to expose what it considers American double standards or hypocrisy regarding terrorism.

2008-05-04 06:00:00 Respect for Chickens Day - Normally, I don’t think much about chickens - unless I’ve got a penchant for some chicken noodle soup, or a chicken and veggie stir-fry. Homage to Pinotage
2008-04-06 20:48:00 *Disclaimer: I received this wine as a sample from Bottlenotes.Or rather, to a Pinotage/Shiraz blend. I received this wine quite a while ago as a part of a blogger trial of Bottlenotes. For the trial, I was given a credit at Bottlenotes which I could use to try out any of their wineclubs. I chose the Dinner Party club, and received this Pinotage/Shiraz in a shipment along with a bottle of Petite Sirah Port that I have yet to try.The wine was a 2006 Seven Sisters "Dawn" Pinotage/Shiraz from South Africa. It can be purchased from Bottlenotes for $14.99. It had a real cork closure, clocked in at 14.5% alcohol by volume, and was a blend of 60% Pinotage/40% Shiraz. This wine was honestly fabulous. It's been a few months since I drank it, but I can still remember what it tasted like, and what an incredible value it was. I'd never had a Pinotage before and I was happy to try one and was delighted to find a new grape to love. I will certainly seek out Pinotage again. The nose of the wi...

Black Swan 2006 Shiraz-Cabernet Australia
2007-12-30 20:27:00 It?s a much better effort than their Chardonnay, which should be avoided at all costs. But this one is a nicely drinkable wine, and maybe even good for dinner too. An even better buy if you can get it on sale (like I did). read more

Nine Stones 2005 Shiraz
2007-10-06 02:16:00 Hilltops2005 ShirazAustraliaMight drink again. As I was doing my "photoshoot" for this blog, I opened the wine to pour into our two glasses and went to work shooting some pix. The entire dining room filled with this wonderful, strong fruit scent while I took shots. I started salivating anticipating what the wine would taste like. The color was really dark purple - almost like ink.The taste was bitter first and tasted a bit like Robitussin cough syrup, then very spicy and peppery and dry. Slight fruit with a short finish ended it.I was disappointed based on how wonderful the initial room-filling aroma was. The taste didn't hold up to what I smelled. It definitely tasted better after having sat open for half an hour. It's a good wine for the price and would probably do best as a drinkable one to have on hand for casual entertaining. I bet it is a wine that will definitely improve with age.7.5 out of 10$11.99 / 750 ml14% alc. by vol.I received my "Wine Enthusiast" mag this afternoon a...

Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigio and Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz
2007-06-25 23:21:00 Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigio2005ItalyShiny green motionSun passing through summer treesDancing in the breezeA little Haiku, for you, prior to my wine review :)Would drink again. We taste-tested this at Olive Garden. I liked it - slightly drier than I normally prefer, but very good flavor and balance and I think with the right food pairing it would be excellent. I probably should have had it with my meal (linguini, garlic, basil and tomatoes), but I opted for the Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz (review next) because I love reds so much (plus the antioxidant level in reds is far superior to the practically non-existant levels in whites).7.5 out of 10 (could definitely be an 8 with food)Not sure of the alc. by vol.Approx. $18.99 - 21.99 / bottleTrentino-Alto Adige RegionPenfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz2005AustraliaDefinitely will drink again.I ordered this at Olive Garden and really enjoyed it before my meal, and with my calamari appetizer. Sufi Story | from the life of Hafiz of Shiraz
2007-06-13 19:12:00 Earlier in his life, Hafiz was a drunkard having little to do with religion. One day, he was staggering across the street, he saw a piece of paper in the gutter among the filth. Curious, he picked it up. The name of God was written on on it."Woe that I should see Your name fallen into such places!" Hafiz cried, brushed it off, and handled the paper with reverence. That night he had a dream. In the dream, a voice told him: "Hafiz, you have raised my name from where it was, and I shall elevate your name among human beings." This is how Hafiz began his career as a sufi (mystic) saint and still today he is one of the greatest poet of all time.- Quoted from the book, The Black Pearl by Henry Bayman. This story touches upon the sufi concept of courtesy or adab. Courtesy contains: harmony/ gentleness (hilm), reverence (burmah), purity (safiyah), tranquility (sukuun), sincerity (ikhlas), modesty (tawazu), solitude (halwat) and spiritual poverty (faqr). Sometime courtesy in the path is also r...

Houghton Cabernet Shiraz Merlot
2007-05-20 03:13:00 I look to the stars and then to the moon,Longing for the straightforward life of June.Residing within the reach of chaos awaiting a sign,I relinquish to a blend of Cab, Shiraz, and Merlot wine.Houghton2004Cabernet 71% Shiraz 20% Merlot 9%Would drink again. This evening's selection was enjoyable. The Houghton blend was nice on its own. The alcohol content is on the higher side, but the berry and oak combo persevered. While the berry bouquet was strong, the initial taste I experienced prior to swallowing was eucalyptus. I made lasagna and the Houghton lost something - it tasted "thinner" with the meal. However, upon reintroducing last night's Zinfandel with the meal, the Zin was better matched. Overall though, the Houghton was good.7.25 out of 10www. houghtonwines.com14.5% alc. by vol.Western Australia$14.99 / bottle (I bought on sale for $11.99)Wine Fact care of Kevin Zraly: "Most Cabernet Sauvignons are blended with other grapes, primarily Merlot. Double Post: "Two Buck Chuck" Shiraz and Chateau Peyfol 2003 Red Bordeaux W
2007-05-14 05:46:00 Reading last night's post, it seems like I went off a bit on an unrelated tangent. However, the point I was trying to make was how, just like food, environment can play into one's wine experience. In my case, I was melancholy from the music I'd been playing and feeling blessed looking and listening to my children while thinking about my past and their future all rolled into one. The wine enhanced that feeling and created an overall nostalgic experience. Whereas the night prior, I was in a different emotional state and was listening to classical music and even though I drank more of the wine then, it didn't seem to enhance my mood. It's the same thing as going to a great restaurant and thoroughly enjoying the food and the company you're with and ordering a wine that tastes great. I've done that and left deciding I've got to go buy a bottle of that great wine. I've bought it, brought it home, and it just doesn't taste the same. As a matter of fact, I've wondered what the he...
