The KSE-100 index traded less an one million shares today! The hired assassin : the Philippine Tariff bill was killed in the Senate February 26, 1906. Published as cover of: Collier's weekly, vol. 36 (March 24, 1906). UNITED STATES OF AMERICA before the SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION SECURITIES EXCHANGE ACT OF 1934 RELEASE NO. 34-58572/ September 17, 2008EMERGENCY ORDER PURSUANT TO SECTION 12(k)(2) OF THE SECURITIES EXCHANGE ACT OF 1934 TAKING TEMPORARY ACTION TO RESPOND TO MARKET DEVELOPMENTS New Short Selling Rules in PDF formatThe Commission continues to be concerned that there is a substantial threat of sudden and excessive fluctuations of securities prices and disruption in the functioning of the securities markets that could threaten fair and orderly markets. As evidenced by our recent publication of an emergency order under Section 12(k) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (1. the ?July Emergency Order?), we are concerned about the possible unnecessary or artificial price movements based on unfounded rumors regarding the stab...

"I remain cautious and largely on the sidelines," says Dennis Slothower (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2337), editor of Stealth Stocks (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2337). However, he is willing to consider several "short" ideas in the gaming and hotel sectors."The fact that the market wasn't able to rally on a declining oil prices shows us that investors are using any rally attempts now to unload stock positions. That doesn't bode well for September, which historically is the worst month of the year."I know this is also an election year -- suggesting the market should do well -- but corporate earnings are very questionable. "For trading speculators I think now is the time to consider shorting the stock market. The gaming sector is one gamble worth considering on the downside. My favorite shorts are Penn Gaming (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=penn) (NASDAQ: PENN (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=penn)),...

Short Selling Hyped Up Oil Stocks: Fieldpoint Petroleum Corp. (FPP) Et Al
2008-05-23 02:35:00
Over the past few days, I’ve had muchas problemas shorting all these hot energy stocks—mostly because I hadn’t taken my medicine lately—when really all I had to do was wait for them to go negative on the day. (late yesterday afternoon, I made my latest tiny-account-so-I-can’t-risk--any-pain-damn-that-really-sucks--for-my-strategy kind of a mistake, shorting 300 PDO at $26.38, since it took out support at $26.50, and while it quickly tanked to $25.50, I wanted more than 85 cents/share profit so I held and it squeezed shorts like me to $29 this morning—I’d already covered yesterday before the close at $27.50, another $300+ loss uhhhhhhh) Today was that day. After managing to only gap a tad bit higher, MXC, FPP, PDO, ROYL and about a dozen other of these highfliers just got absolutely devastated. Normally Supernovas tank just a little at first, but an absolute and immediate wreckage like this—all these stocks are down 15-30% on the day—is very rare. First to go was MX...

PennyStocking DVD students understand worthy trading opportunities only come about every so often—all the normal daily stuff is just too random/unpredictable—so by focusing on these few truly predictable situations, your profitability increases exponentially. If you can keep a cool head when everyone else is going crazy around you, this game gets much easier…that’s right, you 90% of trader losers out there, now is the time to try to recoup your horrific losses! (I’m talking to you, you sad little ETers) I’ve been posting about PDO, MXC and FPP the past few days—even taking quick losses totaling $400 shorting FPP and MXC too early (wisely as it turned out, as those losses would now be pushing $5,000!! Uhh yeah $5k in gains from the long side, if I had any talent whatsoever doing that, which I don’t)—but only after we’ve gotten 3 strong up days are they prime for potentially predictable reversals, the extent of which we’ll have to wait and see…...
How I Broke My Rules And Lost Short Selling A Fraud, Cannon Exploration Inc
2008-05-13 19:18:00
Just about everyone and their mother understands Cannon Exploration Inc (CNEX) is a an outright fraud. Whether you look at PinkSheets.com displaying a skull and cross bones with the tagline ???Caveat Emptor??? next to its stock quote, its now $470 million marketcap (at $7.25 stock price), the blatant pumping by all the usual suspects and the fact that this company has no business of any kind and has now septupled (7x) in price in 5 days all due to a fluffy PR announcing a new website and a sketchy letter of intent to acquire a seemingly real business, no doubt in exchange for pumped up shares. Knowing all that, you might understand why I shorted 600 shares yesterday at $6/share half expecting it to go higher???with the goal of averaging my cost basis up too???but never excluding the possibility of a quick $1-2 drop in price. That???s all well and good, but as a PennyStocker, I have no excuse and my $760 loss (I just covered at $7.20), including commissions, is well deserved. Because...

How To Short Sell aka What Is Short Selling aka Short Selling For Dummies a
2008-04-21 00:09:00
With all the time I spend scouring the landscape for ideal trades, preaching against random market noise and for disciplined trading, I often forget to explain the bare bones basics. Starting now, this will change—every few days I’ll have a detailed lesson. Today, I write about my all-time favorite trading strategy: short selling, which involves betting on a drop in an investment’s prices. So, how does this backwards-sounding strategy work? Ever hear the saying “don’t sell yourself short”? That means don’t believe you can’t succeed at something. Well, in short selling, that’s exactly what you’re doing—betting that xyz investment won’t succeed at increasing in value. Whether you’re betting against a stock, currency or commodity, you’re “selling that investment short.” Short selling is exactly like buying and selling the way that you’re only too familiar with except the order is reversed—you sell before you buy. The old adage “buy low...
Short Selling Stocks
2008-04-14 01:00:00
(http://www.money-zine.com/Cate-gory/Stocks/)The term short-selling stock refers to the practice of selling securities that you do not own. Investors will short-stocks when they believe a stock's market price is going to decline. The process of short selling involves borrowing stock from a brokerage house to sell in the stock market. At a future date, you repurchase the borrowed stock and that step in the process is called a short cover.

Easy Short Plays: Short Selling Hyped Up Failing But Spiking Biotechs The S
2008-04-11 02:05:00
Last night, I posted about how excited I was to short another failing biotech into a ridiculous penny-stock-promoter-fueled price spike. Just like the last time, I wanted a 25% drop in stock price, but I didn’t get that, the price action just didn’t play out as I wanted it to—a decent 8% drop, but no big freefall. I still made $180 today off my wrong thinking, so life could be worse. After an initial 15 cent spike to $4.67—not scary at all cuz it was just one big buy 14k buy order (what is it with these guys, other one at $5 yesterday) that got taken out quickly—the question was could we take out multi-day support at $4.35-$4.40…most of the morning it couldn’t so I covered 700 of my 1,000 shares at $4.40, a disappointing 10 cent/share gain…then it bounced, then very gradually it declined, but still didn’t crack, so I covered my other 300 at $4.37, then gradually…so gradually…$4.35 got taken, then $4.31, $4.25—I re-shorted 1,000 at $4.25 looking for a domino t...

Beware These Toxic Stocks
2008-04-08 16:26:00
BusinessWeek has an interesting story about Toxic Stocks: Beware These 'Toxic' Stocks Bullish noises for the market abound. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke makes it clear that he's prepared to pull out all the stops to prevent economic collapse, and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is talking up broad investor-friendly reforms for market regulators. And, while still behind the fiscal curve, Congress is finally recognizing that emergency measures are needed to help alleviate homeowners' pain and to help prevent a financial catastrophe. With the close of a dismal first quarter, there hangs a faint whiff of optimism in the air over Wall Street. But a warning to investors ready to plunge into the market: Beware of land mines. Even if you think you know perfectly well which stocks are safe, the current market remains a beehive of hazards. Watch out, first of all, for "toxic" stocks that may appear enticing now, but could poison your portfolio at this critical stage of the market. In inve...

Is This The Bottom For Housing Stocks ?
2007-12-29 00:55:00
The housing market is definitely in deep recession. Every now and then pumpers try to convince retail investors that housing has bottomed, and this is the time to start buying housing stocks. CNN Money covers an article stating how experts completely got housing wrong. Another interesting article about the bottom can be found here. The best way to come to a conclusion is to go over some facts.Today sales of new homes plummeting 9% month to month to their lowest level in more than 12 years to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 647,000. This slump was worse than analysts expected.Over the last 12 months, new-home sales nationwide have tumbled by 34.4%, the biggest annual slide since early 1991, and stark evidence of the painful collapse in the once high-flying housing market. The median sales price of a new home dipped to $239,100 in November. That is 0.4% lower than a year ago.Would-be home buyers have found it more difficult to secure financing, especially for "jumbo" mortgage...

More Trouble Ahead For Financials
2007-12-13 02:21:00
Bank of America said its provisions against loan losses would come to $3.3 billion in the fourth quarter amid deterioration in consumer real estate and small business loans. Bank of America's capital ratios continue to decline, and the bank may not resume stock buybacks until 2009. Wachovia, the fifth-largest U.S. bank by market value, said that the Charlotte, N.C., bank is bracing for mounting loan defaults and another round of losses tied to risky mortgage investments. Wachovia, estimated that its provision for loan losses will be about $1 billion more than its charge-offs. Its previous forecast was between $500 million and $600 million. Meanwhile, the bank said its market-related losses -- including those stemming from mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations -- are on pace to exceed the third quarter's. Wachovia's losses on its exposure to collateralized debt obligations and other assets were about $1.4 billion in October and November, compared with ar...
I Like Short Selling Struggling Retailers

I Like Short Selling Struggling Retailers
2007-11-30 00:00:00
I enjoy short selling struggling retailers. There’s just something about them that excites me. Maybe it’s because so many investors buy stock in brands they know and they form emotional attachments with these investments. Disgusting. No matter how poorly their stock performs, these investors hold onto a dream. This kind of thinking epitomizes the stupidity of investors and represents everything I hope to change. Ashworth (Nasdaq:
Will Beazer Survive ?
2007-11-28 07:01:00
Beazer Homes (BZH) CEO Ian McCarthy anticipates 2008 to be another difficult year. He says the Atlanta-based builder is focused on managing issues that have surfaced over the past few months, such as a recent financial restatement and an internal investigation concerning compliance. The company also is installing a downturn management plan that will focus on cash savings across the board.Beazer's latest battle plans were announced today. The company also revealed some of its fourth-quarter results. Beazer is in a restatement period until May 15, 2008, so the quarterly results were incomplete. The most telling figure from the report was the cancellation rate, which logged in at a stunning 68 percent.Leslie Kratcoski, Beazer's vice president, says that "headline issues" had a significant impact on the percentage. Federal, internal, and local investigations, top executive firings, default notices, and heavy losses have kept the builder mired in controversy this year. And McCarthy say...
Short Selling is helping relieve Mortgage Woes
2007-11-23 12:58:00
The so-called “short sale” of a home can be a viable alternative to foreclosure and will become more prevalent as millions of adjustable-rate mortgages reset over the next 18 months, real estate industry observers say. Short sales, an agreement that allows a home to be sold for less than the amount owed, have been around for a long time, but have come to prominence lately because of the unprecedented increase in foreclosures, said Arthur Marvin, broker for Wingate Mortgage Group in Las Vegas and class instructor on foreclosures and short sales. He said there are 3,350 homes listed as short sales in Las Vegas, more than double the number from four months ago, and 1,450 of them are vacant. That’s a good indicator that many of the short sales are investor-owned, Marvin said. “That’s a lot of homes that are short sales and every one of them is overencumbered,” he said. “It’s grown exponentially since last year and it’s going to keep on going. Just a reminder — there ...

What is "Short Selling" or "Shorting a Stock"?
2007-09-14 05:39:00
There are a few variations of terms associated with this concept so first let me throw out the common  phrases and then explain what it actually is..."Short a stock" (Short is used as a verb)"Short position" (Short used an an adjective)"Short Selling" (Short used as an adjective)...are the three most common uses of the term "short" as it relates to investing.  Okay great, but what the heck does it mean?!Shorting a stock means selling shares of a stock THAT YOU DO NOT OWN. You would only do this if you expected that stock TO DECREASE IN VALUE. Eventually you have to "cover your short position" by buying the stock later (hopefully at a lower price than what you sold it for). This is a backwards way of buying low and selling high in that you actually start out by selling high and then buying low. Confused yet? :) Keep reading...Let's use an example: Let's say that company ABC's shares are trading at $50.00 per share today.&...

Short Selling: Squeeze, Short-Interest, Short-Interest Ratio
2007-05-31 07:08:00
In general, people think of investing as buying an asset, holding it while it appreciates in value, and then eventually selling to make a profit. The exact opposite of that is short selling. You make money when the asset falls in value. Let us take a quick look at what is short selling.A Review of Short SellingWhen you sell X number of stocks that you do not own, but you promise to buy it back in future is called short selling. So how can you sell a stock you do not own ? Basically your broker will lend it to you. Sooner or later you must buy back the same X number of stocks (covering) and return them back to your broker. When you buy back the stock at the lower price than you sold earlier, you obviously made a profit on the difference. However if the stock price rises, you end up losing money. Most of the time, you can hold a short for as long as you want. However, you can be forced to cover if the lender wants back the stock you borrowed. This is known as being called away. If the...
What is Short Selling?
2007-02-24 16:00:27
Short selling is another stock trading strategy that some traders follow. A short seller makes profit from the fall in the price of stocks. Short selling is a complex process and requires precise market timing.A short selling trader trades stocks of companies, of which he/she expects a price fall. They usually burrow stocks of these companies from others through their brokers on contract that they will return them later. The trader trades the stocks instantly for the present market value and later when the price drops, he buys the shares for lesser amount and returns to the original holder. So the profit is the commission and burrowing fee deducted difference between the prices of individual stocks multiplied by the number of stocks traded.Short selling is only for experienced traders having the ability to find overpriced stocks and dooming companies. Short selling involves higher level of risks. If the prices of stocks increase, rather than decrease, the trader can face unlimited l...
