Wanna be a millionaire ? "Sell Tomato"
2008-06-05 19:33:00 A Jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the floor as a test. 'You are employed' he said. Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start. The man replied 'But I don't have a computer, neither an email'. 'I'm sorry', said the HR manager. If you don't have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn't exist, cannot have the job.' The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10Kg tomato crate. He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with $60. The man realized that he can survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday.Shortly, he...

BirdNote Begins the Week by Making a Short Story Long
2008-05-20 01:50:00 The first BirdNote essay of the week, “A Long Story in a Short Song” offered one of the best concise explanations of the complexity of communicated information to be found in birdsong that I have heard in quite some time. It is indeed fascinating to contemplate just how intricate a system of communication birds have that until only recently was thought by humans to be merely “pretty.”For the remainder of the week the subjects of the BirdNote essays will be:Tuesday - Two Wings and a Tail by Dennis PaulsonWednesday - World of Warblers by Bob SundstromThursday - Stand-still Birding by Ellen BlackstoneFriday - Swallows Swallow by Bob SundstromKPLU broadcasts BirdNote to all those within their broadcast signal radius at 8:58 AM on each of the above days. Downloads of the podcast, as always, can be located on the BirdNote RSS/Podcast link. Additional information on the topics discussed in the programs can be found on the BirdNote website, including a list of additional radio stati...

"Julian's Yearbook" Wins Chapter One Promotions Short Story Competition
2008-05-04 19:40:00 Marianne Moore may have wanted imaginary gardens with real toads in them, but what's even better is imaginary friends who earn you real money. "Julian's Yearbook", a chapter from one of my two novels-in-progress, has won first prize of 2,500 pounds in the Chapter One Promotions International Short Story Competition. In this episode, Julian grapples with first love and homophobia at his Southern high school, while taking steps to launch his career as a fashion photographer. Here's the beginning: Desire smells like acid in the dark. Its face is a hundred faces, rising out of the stop bath, materializing on grey paper like ghosts. Your ghosts and mine; you knew them too. The football heroes joshing in a group shot, a chorus line of manly awkwardness. There's the clown, the golden boy, the dull and violent sidekick. You've got to remember that snub-nosed blonde with too much school spirit, whose mascara you almost forgot to clean off the backseat of your daddy's car. Mem...

A short story on Divinity and ego
2008-05-01 07:50:00 Indian Stories | Lord Krishna | Wisdom | Sage | ego | conditioned mind | Sadguru | Sai Baba |There lived a Sage, who was very pious & was doing penance for the interest of mankind. By caste, he was a Brahmin and was known to Lord Krishna. He was wandering in secluded areas and had no fixed house for him. He had no desire, no lust, no hatred, and no greed & was in different world of his own.Lord Krishna was very happy with his PRAYERS & Lord Krishna showed him His Virat Swaroop & asked him for any boon. Sage Uttanga told Him that he was desire less and he did not want anything, but Lord Krishna insisted for some boon to be granted to him as a reward for his penance. As Lord Krishna insisted, the latter asked for a boon that whenever he was in need of water (and since this area is a desert area) & whenever he felt thirsty, water may be provided to him. Lord Krishna granted him the boon & disappeared. One day, the Sage Uttanga after walking for a long distance in...
Modern Panchtantra Story [IT Humour]
2008-04-23 18:59:00 Once upon a time, there was a software engineer who used to develop programs on his Pentium machine, sitting under a tree on the banks of a river. He used to earn his bread by selling those programs in the Sunday market. One day, while he was working, his machine tumbled off the table and fell in the river. Encouraged by the Panchatantra story of his childhood( the woodcutter and the axe )He started praying to the River Goddess. The River Goddess wanted to test him and so appeared only after one month of rigorous prayers. The engineer told her that he had lost his computer in the river. As usual, the Goddess wanted to test his honesty. She showed him a match box and asked, "Is this your computer ?" Disappointed by the Goddess' lack of computer awareness, the engineer replied, " No."She next showed him a pocket-sized calculator and asked if that was his. Annoyed, the engineer said "No, not at all !!" Finally, she came up with his own Pentium machine and asked if it was his.The engin...

I am sure that you will agree that my record of service has been excellent, my disciplinary record exemplary and my performance statistics at worst acceptable, sometimes outstanding. I acknowledge the extent of the cost associated with my request, but firmly believe I have ample years of active service before me, offering me the opportunity to repay whatever new investment might be needed. In any case, costs incurred can also be at least partially offset by my recovery, should that come earlier than I predict. In my present state, I am nothing but a burden. As you know, my name is Dale, my descriptor 42. I have over thirty years of service and have regularly retrained and re-skilled. Protesters - a short story
2008-04-04 16:26:00 A sharp closing of the door left the two men together yet alone, strangers, introduced merely seconds before. The older, taller of the two seemed to scrutinise the stockier new arrival for a few moments, his penetrating gaze noting the military dress that remained less than a uniform alongside the almost apologetic manner he projected. They had fallen silent after their mutual acknowledgement, the elderly man’s gripped handshake accompanied by a stentorian, lengthened “Hello”, the younger man’s hesitant nod, plus a hand quickly withdrawn. During an extension of that same silence, shared at the room’s edge by its only window, they surveyed the line of protesters below. The quiet that filled the room, a quiet left after the noisy departure of the usher who had just led the younger man up from the street, soon began to fade. Sounds of chanting, angry sloganising, hardly rhythmic from this admixture of universally blue-suited, tone-deaf Englishmen, filtered through the draught...
VALUE HAS A VALUE ONLY IF ITS VALUE IS VALUED
2008-04-02 20:02:00 Well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a Rupee 500 note.In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this Rupee 500 note?"Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this note to one of you but first let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the note up. He then asked, "Who still wants it?"Still the hands were up in the air."Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. "Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth Rupee 500/-. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happe...

Editor: "Sir. It's amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this possible? "Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said:"We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage.Having selected the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different horses. My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was riding seemed to be a crazy one. Don't let the cups drive you, enjoy the coffee instead
2008-03-27 18:46:00 Take a CoffeeA group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: "If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other's cups.""Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and con...

A Close Shave (A Short Story)
2008-02-28 15:27:00 In the quiet of the bathroom, the packet seemed to crinkle like overhead thunder as Peter opened it. As can happen with such things, though, the disposable razor fell out and clattered onto the small tiles of the bathroom floor, accompanied by Peter?s muted curse. As he bent to pick it up, the now discarded plastic packet swept itself off the edge of the sink and followed Peter down, falling past his eyes.?While I?m down here ? ?, he thought, picking it up as well.As he put it down on the edge of the sink and rinsed the inevitable dust from the razor, Peter once again noticed the attention-getting lettering which had made him buy the razor in the first place, despite the fact that it had come from a company he?d never heard of;?A new type of shaving experience!??Let?s hope so?, he thought, continuing his preparations. He mused on the fact that the packed had contained only one disposable razor as he rinsed a face-washer under the hot water then put it over the lower half of his face....
Fairy Tale Inspired Short Story - WEEPING LAKE
2008-02-26 13:18:00 Weeping LakeBy Dorlana VannVivian stood on the side of the lake. Her bright hair waved like the water as the wind graciously blew in from the south. She inhaled and then looked down at her newly acquired engagement ring. She had said yes, but she knew that wasn’t what she had meant. Everyone had been there, watching them, watching her with anticipated excitement. And since she did love and respect Scott, she didn’t want to humiliate him by saying no.But it was just too soon. She didn’t expect to marry the first guy she had fallen in love with. She wanted to love many men. She wanted to experience life and joy and … freedom. She hated — for him — that she wasn’t ready. She easily slipped the ring off of her finger and let the sunlight sparkle off of the massive diamond. A diamond that must have put Scott back a months salary. A diamond that said, “You belong to me.” She only wanted to belong to herself. It seemed to happen all at once: softly she heard her name, a gus...

The Changing Fortunes of a Student in Crisis - A Short Story
2008-02-03 16:47:00 It has been raining since this morning. But as is usual of that month, it suddenly ceased. The brilliant sun then sets in radiating its rays across the city. Despite this, rain still seems to be threatening to burst angrily from the sky. Oblivious of all this, the long meandering traffic flows defiantly on. Dead asleep in a low wooden black-painted house at Fourah Bay Road, is John Abiodun Thompson. Outside, other school-going boys and girls with their parents are shopping in preparation for their return to school. The weather is unable to disrupt this usual animated scenery. In previous years, John had been a part of it at the start of September. He and his mother had often gone to town at a time like this to fight with many others at the bookstores. Late in the day after hours struggling in a long queue, they would visit BATA Shoe Company to pick their choice of shoes and satchels for the coming school year. But, today, John is still lying flat asleep on a bare mattress, covered ...

Short Story Roundup
2008-01-23 20:59:00 This is needle in a haystack territory, but I'm trying to remember the titles/authors of two short stories that I read as a kid -- I seem to recall that they were in an elementary school or junior high classroom anthology, though both seem a bit morbid for school.* two guys are in a car, fleeing a bank robbery (and possibly on drugs). They enter a tunnel, and find themselves deep in gridlock -- and the tunnel never ends, and it turns out they were actually in a car accident, and are now in Hell or something to that effect.* a woman is approached by a stranger, who gives her a box with a button on it. He tells her "if you press that button, someone you don't know will die, and we will give you a shitload of money." She takes the box, thinks about how horrible it is, thinks about how great the money would be, and finally, after a few days, presses the button. She waits, and gets a phone call: "hey, someone pushed your husband in front of a train." The stranger shows up with a big ba...
Rumpelstilzchen inspired short story - Of All the Luck
2008-01-23 18:06:00 Of all the LuckbyDorlana VannGood Luck is an illusion. I had to learn the hard way that there are only three types of luck: Extreme, Medium, and Weak. Of course there are different degrees to each of these. I used to fit pretty close into the Medium.I walked through the front door a little after midnight. Jana sat on the couch in the darkness, the images of the television reflecting on her solemn face. “Oh, you’re up,” I said as I gave her a kiss on the cheek.“I want to talk to you, Trevor.”I caught a glimpse of deep concern in her eyes. I immediately thought something had happened to the baby. “Is Chad OK?”“He’s a handful to deal with by myself… but he’s fine.”“Good… good,” I said. That’s all I needed to know. I could go on to bed because anything else could wait until morning. “Well, goodnight.” I turned and walked down the hallway.I didn’t get very far. She yelled after me: “I hired a P.I.!”“You did what?” I stormed back into the room...

2008-01-12 05:35:00 Pervaiz Munir AlviPurDil Khan had been under a lot of pressure lately. Even before the month of fasting had started his wife was nagging him on a number of issues. She wanted his help to stock essentials like sugar, rice, flour and ghee before the prices would shoot up for the holidays. She also wanted him to send for their elder daughter Gul Jan and her three little children to spend Ramazan and Eid with them. The three grand children must have new clothes and shoes for the Eid and the time was really running short. But PurDil Khan thought there was still enough time for these things and wanted to postpone addressing them for few more days if not for few weeks. More pressing on his mind was what was going on at his workshop and the situation that he might have to face at the mosque. Sitting on his lathe he thought of the days when his worries were much less and simpler to handle.Six years ago his elder daughter Gul Jan was only sixteen when his brother SherDil Khan surprised him on...

RANDOM THOUGHTS
2008-01-04 05:06:00 Happy New Year!!! I read my email real fast last December 31 just before midnight. I saw a message from Nise' and it says I won a book by Sharon Dunn, Death of a Garage Sale Newbie on her book giveaway. Yey!!! Thank you, Nise'. It was like this story was written for me. I'm sure you can also relate. Very inspiring. Here goes:The Tea CupThere was a couple who took a trip to England to shop in a beautiful antique store to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They both liked antiques and pottery, and especially teacups. Spotting an exceptional cup, they asked ?May we see that? We?ve never seen a cup quite so beautifu...

Lately I haven't seen too much of her as she's hooked up the Internet. Actually not many people at all have seen her recently; she says she's working on a big project. Now that she's got the Internet she reckons she can focus a lot more on her work without distractions. She doesn't 'waste' time doing grocery shopping anymore. Now she orders all her food and household items. She says if she's extremely busy, her weekly list is saved into the computer, and she just clicks on 'order' and the usual stuff is delivered to her door every week. 2007-12-20 16:00:00 By Alan GableThe best song ever, "The Godfather" theme, was playing over the slightly muted intercom. I was suspended by the velvet rope and pleasant sign that politely requested for me to stay put until the next cashier became available. My hand was sweating, but only my left hand which held a paperback penguin classic copy of Jack Kerouac's On The Road. The cover was made of some type of shiny insulated plastic, undoubtedly a NASA spin off and it was making just the one hand clammy. Both cashiers were occupied. The one to the right was busy explaining the "Member's Club" card application to an apparent octogenarian. The other cashier was a thin silver-haired woman. Her spaghetti lumbar-length hair was a structural microcosm of her linear figure. She felt compelled by her jovial nature, and her employer's commitment to customer service, to make awkward smalltalk with each customer. Her current target seemed to be receiving an earful of biographical info about some obscure...

Rhamba
2007-12-12 22:53:00 In a land rather far away from here, there lived a princess named Rhamba. It was widely believed that she possessed the secret of eternal youth. Many had tried to gain this knowledge by means devious and otherwise, but none had succeeded so far. Rhamba had not aged a day past her sixteenth birthday. Several generations ...
A POEM FOR ME...
2007-12-11 08:52:00 A dear friend of mine, Yvette, made a poem especially for me. Thanks, Yvette!Wipe away the tears in your eyes,There is hope in the deep blue skies. The eyes of God are here to see,To lead your life in victory. You cry, O God, I submit to you,Everything that I must do.In pain Your mercy for me abounds,Your love is great as I have found.Yes, wipe away those many tears,God is in control of our living years. His promises holds forevermore,A road that leads to an open door. She wrote me this poem and sent it to me last Saturday. We were together the night I walked out of our Christmas party. I was so sad...

The Indian hell...........
2007-11-13 18:44:00 A man dies and goes to hell. There he finds that there is a different hell for each country. He goes to the German hell and asks, "What do they do here?" He told, "First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in and beats you for the rest of the day."The man does not like the sound of that at all, so he moves on. He checks out the USA hell as well as the Russian hell and many more. He discovers that they are all more or less the same as the German hell. Then he comes to the Indian hell and finds that there is a long line of people waiting to get in. Amazed, he asks, "What do they do here?"He told, "First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the Indian devil comes in and beats you for the rest of the day. "But that is exactly the same as all the other hells - why are there so many people waiting to get in?"********Because mainten...

New Addition
2007-11-12 18:49:00 The last couple of weeks I've been thinking about creating another blog for all my short stories. I feel if I leave my thoughts and experiences on Maple Takedown and create stories on another blog, everything will be organized and neater. I still haven't decided of a name or started the construction for the site, but hopefully by the end of the day I will have the blog up and running. The stories won't be any longer than a few paragraphs, but some of favorite short stories are by J. Robert Lennon. He writes short short stories that are little anecdotes comprised of no more than a few sentences. I wrote the following story in junior year of high school and none of my newer stories are quite as good. Here goes:R. had a beautiful tie he would wear to school every Wednesday. M. loved the tie and would gawk at its array of colors and patterns. Every Wednesday, R. and M. had gym class together meaning they would have to change into athletic wear. M. decided he couldn't go a...
