rizal shrine (calamba, laguna)
2011-12-12 09:47:00
Jose Rizal Mercado was born on June 19, 1861 at Calamba in the province of Laguna. He was the second son and the seventh of 11 children of Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso. He spent his childhood in this two-storey house, located at the heart of the Calamba town center. The original house, howevever, was destroyed during World War II. It was then reconstructed by virtue of Executive Order No. 145 of President Elpidio Quirino and was said to be funded mainly through the donations of schoolchildren. The reconstruction efforts were spearheaded by Architect Juan F. Nakpil. He researched, designed the ancestral house of Rizal to be a truthful copy to the original. It was then inaugurated on June 19, 1950. At the ground floor of the house are various memorabilias, photo displays that show what a typical Filipino house looks like during that century . Visitors would then be treated to the various sections of the house - bedrooms, kitchen and even the toilet. One must not also mi...

rizal shrine and waterworks

The modern steel gate at the Rizal Shrine at Talisay in Dapitan City, is perhaps the only reminder that Jose Rizal was indeed exiled here in 1892. He was sent here because of his controversial writings which sparked the Philippine revolution. Back then, he was free to roam around the town, to teach some local students and even to practice medicine from time to time. Other than these metal bars, there is no other reminder of the exile that Rizal both endured and enjoyed for four years. This beautiful property is located between the sea and the forest. Rizal purchased this estate with the Php6000 Manila lottery prize that he won. He then spent most of his time in this charming, peaceful place. Today, there are replicas of the residential structures that were constructed during Rizal's time. One must not also miss the dam that he himself built which is part of the modern waterworks system that replaced the kilometers of bamboo tube networks. It is evident then that Jose Riza...
Face Piercing at Sam Kong Shrine
2011-10-06 11:38:00
WARNING - Graphic content, blood and pierced faces. May not be everyone's cup of tea :)Every morning for a week during the Phuket Vegetarian Festival there are big street processions in Phuket Town, plus a few local processions near the shrines themselves. I always try to see at least a couple of the big processions. The main crowds are around old Phuket Town, which makes for a big spectacle especially with all the firecrackers, but I also like to get to some shrines before they start walking. Several reasons for this... Photos - it's easier to take a photo when someone is sitting down, harder during a procession when they are moving and there are crowds. Also, on a sunny day, they start early and it's not so hot.. plus if I am working that day, I can get to the shrine and easily get to work on time. Mum and Dad were visiting from England - this would be their first taste of the face piercing. We were at Sam Kong shrine (in the north side of Phuket Town) not long after 6am on Sep...
Sapan Hin Chinese Shrine
2011-08-13 05:47:00
Many times when I take a day off work we just have a very relaxing family day, we don't feel like taking a long drive or a "big day out". We might stay home, just go out for lunch... sometimes I have to remind myself that I'm not a tourist - it's quite normal to chill out at home doing the garden and let the kids play games. Sure sometimes they are very happy to go out, like the trip we took to Splash Jungle recently, or the "adventure" day on mopeds at Koh Yao Noi island. Other days I try to combine relaxation with a chance to take some photos - the Phuket blog needs feeding! So a couple of weeks ago was a "home" day, but in the afternoon, we headed out for some fresh air and a walk. Destination: Sapan Hin, which is a large recreational area, largely built on reclaimed land in the south of Phuket Town, right by the sea. There are often festivals and fairs held here, and its always popular with locals to take a walk, go jogging, sit by the sea. At Sapan Hin there is a Chinese Sh...
Tha Reua Chinese Shrine
2011-07-10 09:55:00
Many posts on this blog relate to the history and culture of Phuket, such as the recent post about the Heroines of Phuket and posts about the Phuket Mining Museum for example. I also like to visit temples and shrines around the island. Phuket has a mix of Buddhist temples, Chinese shrines, quite a lot of Mosques and even a couple of Christian places of worship. In particular the Chinese shrines fascinate me, and in a couple of months (starting 26th September) the Phuket Chinese community has it's biggest festival - the vegetarian festival (see Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2011 Schedule). For 10 days the Chinese shrines are the focal point for celebrations, prayers and bizarre rituals.Tha Reua Shrine is probably the most visible Chinese Shrine in Phuket, since its right by the main airport road just south of the Heroines monument. Any transport from the airport to the main beaches (Patong, Kata, Karon) will pass this way. If you've seen a big shrine by the side of the road, it's pro...

Doug Aldrich: metal shrine interview
2011-02-23 10:19:00
When did you start writing for the album? DA: We started? well, really I started at the end of 2009 working on ideas on my own. David had said that he might wanted to make a record and maybe it could be more acoustic based. I started working on a lot of acoustic stuff and the first song we wrote was in January in 2010, which was ?One of these days? which is kind of acoustic based and then little by little we started getting into some heavier stuff. Somebody else told me that maybe the record´s not quite as heavy as ?Good to be bad?, but they enjoy it more, so I think that´s kind of how I feel too. http://metalshrineblogg.blogspo-t.com/2011/02/intervju-med-doug--aldrich-i-whitesnake.html

Hot Photos: Dwele's 600 Concert-Goers at The Shrine
2010-11-29 22:38:00
For the first time in two years, R&B singer Dwele performed a live set in Chicago's south loop entertainment district to a packed crowd of more than 600 VIPs and fans.  Produced by Christi with an Eye, the sold-out event brought hip-hop/soul artist Pennjamin Bannekar, DJ Major Taylor and R&B band Verzatile as the show's opening acts, promoted by Lucid Entertainment.   The concert was hosted by a great battle-of-the-sexes banter between author Zondra Hughes of M.O.O.D. Lounge and comedian and radio personality Leon Rogers. Fase2Fase.com, the world first social networking website for minority small businesses and retailers, and WorldWideWaddie.com sponsored the Dwele concert, whose set began with a medley of hip-hop soul tunes spun by DJ Rahsta Roots.   Fans...

Early Morning at Kathu Shrine
2010-10-25 09:33:00
I always try to visit my "local" shrine in the morning when they are doing their street procession as part of the Phuket vegetarian festival. Kathu is (so the history books say) where the festival originated and the local community take a lot of pride in the festival and their history. I already blogged about our visit to the shrine on the 7th for the opening ceremonies of the festival. I also headed to Kathu a couple of times during the week for food, as I tried very hard to stick to the vegetarian diet for the duration of the festival. On Friday 15th the idea was to be at the shrine nice and early, but the morning looked so grey. I did not rush, got to there at about 6:30am, a bit late to watch face piercing. I had been earlier last year and had some piercing photos like this one. Last year the morning was bright and sunny.Seemed to me that with approaching rain the participants in the procession were keen to get moving. They walk all the way from Kathu to Phuket Town, through tow...
Bang Neow Shrine - Street Procession in Phuket Town
2010-10-20 15:39:00
October 13th was the day for devotees from Bang Neow shrine to strut their stuff. Bang Neow and Jui Tui shrines have the 2 largest processions. I had been to the Jui Tui procession last year, which was huge, and very crowded around the shrine. The weather thus far in the festival had not been great. I'd been along to 2 shrines (see previous blog entry) in the morning of the 10th and 11th under grey skies, and when I woke at 6am on the 13th, the sky looked heavy. I almost headed straight back to bed, but after a coffee, I decided that fortune favours the bold (Latin lesson: fortuna audax iuvat). And, fortune did indeed smile on Phuket Town that morning. It turned out to be a sunny, hot morning. Great for photos, maybe not to great for walking 5 miles with swords in your face under a burning sun.I was there before the procession hit the old town - they first walked south to Sapan Hin, then back up towards to old town. The procession route was shown on a map from the TAT office so I h...
Mactan Shrine: Magellan and Lapu-Lapu in Battle of Mactan
2010-10-18 06:59:00
Mactan Shrine in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines is where the battle for supremacy and freedom took place between Ferdinand Magellan and Lapu-Lapu. Because of the success in Christianizing some native, Ferdinand Magellan a Portuguese explorer crossed the channel to Mactan Island in the hope to spread Christianity in the area. But even before reaching the shore, Magellan along with his 49 Christian soldiers were defeated by the chieftain of Mactan, Lapu-Lapu, along with his approximately 1,500 warriors armed ...

Sapam Chinese Shrine (Kuan Te Kun)
2010-09-26 05:54:00
I had meant to visit the Chinese shrine at Sapam for ages. Sapam is a village about 7km north of Phuket Town. Just south of the village is Wat Sapam which I have visited before. The village is/was a fishing community. The access is just off the main road between town and the airport, about 1.5km south of the bypass road. The Chinese shrine is right at the corner at the entrance to the village. The village road is only about 500m long before you hit the sea on the east coast of Phuket.Although the shrine is commonly called "Sapam Shrine", or "Sanjao Sapam" (Sanjao is the Thai word for a Chinese shrine), the actual name is Kuan Te Kun - the sign above says Sanjao Kuan Te Kun, and I guess says a similar thing in Chinese. I wanted to visit, as this is one of the participating shrines in the Phuket vegetarian festival, and this year (2010), the first main street procession of the festival will start at Sapam shrine on Saturday 10th October (see the schedule). I intend to be there nice an...

Big new music update for ya led by some high quality recap footage of Lupe Fiasco's performance at The Shrine. The angles from the back of the stage are awesome with the lighting reflecting as well. Some Photos from Kathu Shrine - Vegetarian Festival
2009-10-22 03:56:00
The vegetarian festival is underway, there have been a couple of the street processions in Phuket Town already, I have been eating the special Jae diet for 4 days now and driving home last night past the Phuket Brewery I was gagging for a beer.. but part of the festival is purification, cleaning the body.. so no beers until next week.Would have uploaded a few photos earlier, but the Gremlins struck twice this week. Our wireless internet modem at home suddenly stopped working, and then.. as I was taking photos at Kathu village shrine on Saturday 17th October for the opening ceremony of the festival, my EOS 20D decided to **** up. I got some photos of the people as prayers were said, incense was burned and the Go Teng pole was blessed, and then just as I hoped to get some action shots of the pole being raised, I got "Error 99". Won't bore you with details... looks like a lens issue, so the lens will need fixing. Oddly, it was working just fine a couple of days later.. but can't be 1...
Common, The Roots, Heavy D, and Jeremih LIVE at the Shrine
2009-09-14 03:57:00
The Hennessy Artistry tour came through to The Shrine in Chicago last night for a very memorable and lively performance! Common and the Roots headlined the show with amazing collaborative artistry that produced a powerful soul sound keeping the Shrine crowd dancing throughout! I was really impressed with the eclectic lineup, which included Zoe Kravitz, Colin Munroe, Jeremih, Heavy D, Common, and The Roots! The unique combination of powerful veterans, and talented new blood provided a really fresh overall performance. Even the structure of the show was really successful as The Roots and Common would play multiple times throughout and in between the other artists' sets in order to keep it fresh and always lively. The show was also...

Shrine of the Serene Light
2009-04-26 17:05:00
Phuket Town is full of history, full of interest. I keep stumbling upon new places... I wish there was more time to explore and less time in the office! On Friday I headed into the old town before work, in search of a Chinese shrine called the Shrine of the Serene Light or Ting Kwan Tang. There's not a huge amount of information about this shrine online, and if you are walking around old Phuket Town, as I have done many times, you'll probably miss it. The shrine is on Phang Nga road, just a hundred meters west of the On On Hotel... but it's well hidden. There is an entry off the road leading to a narrow alleyway. The shrine is not yet visible. If you were passing, you'd see the entrance, but the alley does not look like it leads to anything exciting... I read about the shrine on the "Phuket Town Treasure Map" which you can pick up at various locations around the old town. The main office that produces this map is on Soi Romanee. I was happy to know that there are always som...

North Carolina: Jihadist Sympathizer Happy Jihadist Bombed Sufi Shrine In P
2009-03-07 01:52:00
Thanks to Jihad Watch:Rusty over at the Jawa Report has kindly sent me notice of North Carolina jihadist Samir Khan's reaction to this story:"Militants bomb ancient shrine in Pakistan," from AP, March 5: PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A bomb exploded Thursday at the mausoleum of a 17th century Sufi poet in northwestern Pakistan, underscoring the gulf between hard-line Muslims and those in the region who follow a traditional, mystical brand of Islam. A letter delivered three days before the attack to the management of the mausoleum of Sufi poet Rehman Baba on the outskirts of Peshawar warned against its promotion of "shrine culture," said Sahibzada Mohammad Anees, a top government official in the city. The letter also noted that women were coming to pray at the shrine, he said....(It's hard to tell whether or not this is an account of the same incident.)Anyway, here is Samir Khan's reaction: AllahuAkbar, this is great news. The Mujahideen are cleaning up the Shirk in Pakistan. ...
Jui Tui Shrine (Phuket Town)
2008-10-05 15:40:00
Yesterday afternoon I took a walk around the streets near Jui Tui Shrine, one of the largest Chinese shrines in Phuket Town. It's just along Ranong Road road from the old market (which has now been demolished and a new building looks like it will be complete sometime soon - great! No more smelly old market!) - easy to find, and certainly worth a look if you are in Phuket Town. Ranong road near the market is busy enough at the best of times. The local buses leave from and arrive at Ranong road. From here you can get a bus to most parts of Phuket island.During the vegetarian festival, much of the road is packed with food stalls and little restaurants selling Jae (vegetarian) food. I parked a couple of blocks away and wandered along Ranong road. Half close your eyes and ignore the mopeds squeezing through the people, and the road has a very old feel...And if you look the other way ... a traffic jam. I mean, these people must know what's going on down here. There are plenty of other r...
Kathu Shrine
2008-10-04 16:31:00
Well Friday night was a bit disappointing! I guess I should have checked local sources (like the schedule posted on the wall of the shrine), but instead believed the festival schedule on the "official" vegetarian website that I copied on this blog.. but there was no bladed ladder climbing or oil bathing at Kathu shrine on Friday night. And there were lots of other similarly confused people there too! I met a big group of tourists who'd come over the hill from Patong. Well, hope you at least enjoyed the local atmosphere. I like Kathu village. I just posted about a walk in Kathu village, now a few more pictures of the shrine.Compared to the big shrines in Phuket Town like Jui Tui and Bang Neow, Kathu is much quieter, yet it's an impressive building for such a small local community. You have to remember that Kathu was where the festival originated, and it seems the whole village takes part. Hardly anyone around not wearing white, young and old. Kathu village and shrine is worth a vis...
