They're not the most economical in the Shure range - the impressive SE210 and SE310s can be had for a reasonable amount less - but they do come up trumps where performance is concerned. They also put all but one or two similar products firmly in the shade. Shure's background lies in the in-ear units deployed by on-stage musicians, and the first thing that hit us was the comfort of the SE420s when inserted into our lug-holes. We've used such in-ear devices before and had to stop after half an hour due to discomfort. Yet we easily got past three hours and counting in one session with the SE420s and still weren't particularly troubled. We found that the modular cable system that Shure employs doesn't offer quite the same level of comfort, but it still wasn't really a problem and it does open up a couple of extra connection options. Not because it makes it harder to steal, but because it seems like a waste of materials and, at times, they are difficult to open. Shure identified this problem and asked Combined Technologies to create a new type of packaging for the Shure Music Phone Adapter. The goal was to reduce the amount of material used for the package while maintaining an anti-theft design. The result is a smaller package that reduces the amount of plastic used without compromising surface area for product presentation. By utilizing Blisterguard, a new pilfer-proof board stock that is very difficult to tear, they were able to design a fold-over, heat-sealed blister card containing a much smaller clam of plastic. But according to a press release that came out today at IFA, these babies will cost $99 when they appear. It's a very low stoop indeed for the makers of ridiculously expensive—but oh-so-sweet sounding—earbuds. Shure has assured us that the SE110 are indeed iPhone friendly, and that the $40 Shure iPhone earphone adapter is not needed.I have used the SE210 for a few months now, and they are great, but at $149, probably still too pricey. I will be a fan of the SE110 only if it comes with the squishy noise-isolating memory foam that makes its predecessors so damn comfortable and peaceful.
