Russian Man claims Jesus of Siberia
2009-08-29 15:54:00
The beard and long hair are both present and correct. And with his flowing linen robes and beatific smile he certainly does a fine impression of a holy man.But to his believers in this remote corner of Siberia, Sergei Torop, a former traffic policeman, is the literal reincarnation of none other than Jesus Christ.Russian ex-traffic cop Sergei Torop sits on his wooden throne during a meeting with his followers in the remote village of PetropavlovkaTorop, 48, is the spiritual leader of at least 5,000 devoted followers, among them intellectuals, artists and professionals who flock to worship him in the small isolated village of Petropavlovka - more than 2000 miles from Moscow.Torop was ?reborn? as ?Vissarion? in 1991 just as Russia was facing a crisis of confidence following the collapse of the iron curtain. He is just the latest example of Russia?s predilection for 'personality cults' - a national obsession that leads back all the way to the days of Rasputin. Both Lenin and Stalin tapp...

From Guantánamo to Siberia
2008-03-06 16:56:00
The Fordham University website reports a recent talk by the author Mary Higgins Clark where she stated:The author said that her religion and her Jesuit education have contributed to her decision to keep graphic sex and violence out of her work, yet not abandon passion and suspense."I think Alfred Hitchcock movies were classics of suspense, yet nobody was blown up,” she said. “And books like Wuthering Heights throb with passion. You can have passion without the graphic descriptions that make you feel as if you’ve stumbled into someone’s physical exam.” (Janet Sassi)If some of the first reviewers of Wuthering Heights knew now that Emily Brontë's novel would qualify as the embodiment of the good taste, they simply wouldn't believe it. But they would probably be even more shocked by the following news published today in The Independent. The context? An interview with Moazzam Begg, ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee: In Guantanamo, I asked the Americans if it was possible to study b...

Will Legend of Ahhhs make it to the silver screen?
2008-02-04 21:13:00
It's been almost 20 years since the debut of the ski film that changed the way we as skiers and riders truly viewed "ski porn." From the depths of almost absolute obscurity, Greg Stump has re-emerged and will put out his first film in 10 years, "The Legend of Ahhhs." Unfortunately there will be no new skiing or riding footage, but instead, this will be more of a documentary about the business of revolutionizing the ski movie industry. With the help of old friends, Glen Plake, Scot Schmidt, and Mike Hattrup, Stumpy has stepped up to the plate after several years of part-time work, so to speak. And after watching "Siberia" a few weeks back, I know why he did this. No. Of course I don't know why, but I have a better idea of why he stopped making ski films. First, I think he thought he'd done all he wanted to do in the ski film industry with the completion of a "Fistful of Moguls," (Some of which was shot in the Blue World, FYI) the passing of Craig Kelley may have been one of the big...

Happy Anniversary! (And some Siberia stuff)
2007-08-03 16:56:00
I have been in Korea for a full year now! I can hardly believe it - time has flown! It seems like just the other day I was in Russia... and now I have been here for a full year. Wow.Speaking of Russia, owing to the popularity of my Siberia photo (er, see the previous post if you're confused), I've decided to submit a Siberia photo collection and essay to the Passport theme at JPG Magazine. Sadly, you can only submit 10 photos, so I decided to limit my photo-essay to Lake Baikal and Olkhon Island. Please check it out - and don't forget to VOTE! (Remember, you must be registered/signed-in for your vote to count, but registration is free and easy.)I would still like to submit a single photo to the Passport theme as well. I'm not sure if I should submit one of the Siberia photo-essay photos, or if I should submit something different. Please let me know what you think - your advice will most definitely be appreciated!
