Instead, you get a calculator that evaluates expressions and remembers what you enter for later use. Like my Stopwatch gadget, it's no frills and to the point. Here's a screen shot. Like I said, not the most exciting interface, but what it lacks in style it makes up for in usefulness. The settings dialog gives you a good idea of how to use it. There are other shortcuts as well. For instance you can enter 0x20[enter] and it converts it to decimal (32). What I find it useful for is adding up long lists of numbers like: 10+12+24+17+4+30+11[enter] Now of course you can do this with other calculators but you enter operations one at a time. But what they probably didn’t think of is that this mobile-friendly version can also be loaded in the Firefox sidebar, just like we learned last week from the guys over at MozillaLinks. If you want to add Google Reader to your Firefox sidebar, simply open the bookmark manager (Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks) and create a new bookmark with the Google Reader for iPhone URL. 2008-04-13 23:52:00 Vista has gadgets similar to what is found on the Mac and in Yahoo Widgets (formerly Konfabulator). For some reason, they have not been well received which (again) is a bit puzzling to me since they work quite well and are easy to author. The quality of a gadgets themselves is not always up to par with their Mac and Yahoo counterparts but that's not a limitation of the platform. My favorite gadgets are the NPR Listener, AdSense Monitor and Wireless Status Meter. Gadgets are really easy to write. There's no compilation and the installation is as simple as placing the files in a special folder. To illustrate the point, I wrote a simple stopwatch gadget. The gadget is simplicity itself. Click to start, click to stop, double-click to reset. No buttons or countdowns or lap times. Nothing to confuse a user like myself. Sean Lyndersay, ironically a former Microsoft IE developer (now Live Search), has developed a rather ingenuous solution to display WebSlices on the desktop using a very simple Sidebar gadget he calls the ?WebSlice Viewer Gadget?. It?s still in alpha so it?s all Microsoft?s fault if it breaks. In a nutshell, because WebSlices are actually stored as feeds inside the native Windows RSS platform, desktop applications including Sidebar gadgets can very simply fetch and display the data without much hassle. In this case, it couldn?t be any simpler to pick the WebSlice you want to display in the gadget, and have it appear in a simple frame on the desktop.
