I often forget though, that while most chronic lungers know what this stuff means, a lot of people who visit my blog probably don’t.  So, if anyone is interested, here’s a little explanation of what all that junk means…. Instead, you get a calculator that evaluates expressions and remembers what you enter for later use. Like my Stopwatch gadget, it's no frills and to the point. Here's a screen shot. Like I said, not the most exciting interface, but what it lacks in style it makes up for in usefulness. The settings dialog gives you a good idea of how to use it. There are other shortcuts as well. For some reason, they have not been well received which (again) is a bit puzzling to me since they work quite well and are easy to author. The quality of a gadgets themselves is not always up to par with their Mac and Yahoo counterparts but that's not a limitation of the platform. My favorite gadgets are the NPR Listener, AdSense Monitor and Wireless Status Meter. Gadgets are really easy to write. There's no compilation and the installation is as simple as placing the files in a special folder. To illustrate the point, I wrote a simple stopwatch gadget. The gadget is simplicity itself. Click to start, click to stop, double-click to reset. No buttons or countdowns or lap times. Nothing to confuse a user like myself. Indexer Status Sidebar Gadget for Windows Search
2008-04-11 08:47:00 Brandon Paddock, who works on the Windows Shell Team here at Microsoft, wrote a Windows Sidebar Gadget that displays the status of the Windows Search Indexer. Download the Indexer Status Gadget here. I don't know about you but I think it's kind of neat being able to see how many files Windows Search has indexed on my PC right from my desktop. For folks giving the Windows Search 4.0 Preview a try, you can enable "Index Now" functionality (which is reflected in the above screenshot). Brandon Paddock developed this gadget on his own time and isn't officially supported by Microsoft. Brandon also developed the Start++ search add-on for Windows Vista.

Sidebar gadget brings WebSlices to the desktop

Sean Lyndersay, ironically a former Microsoft IE developer (now Live Search), has developed a rather ingenuous solution to display WebSlices on the desktop using a very simple Sidebar gadget he calls the ?WebSlice Viewer Gadget?. It?s still in alpha so it?s all Microsoft?s fault if it breaks. In a nutshell, because WebSlices are actually stored as feeds inside the native Windows RSS platform, desktop applications including Sidebar gadgets can very simply fetch and display the data without much hassle. In this case, it couldn?t be any simpler to pick the WebSlice you want to display in the gadget, and have it appear in a simple frame on the desktop.
