Sierra Club Tells Dollar General and Target to Make Change in China
2007-07-30 10:00:00 With the last few months of quality issues focused on individual products: pet food, seafood, toys, tires, etc. However, it appears that the fight has been taken to another level as the Sierra Club has issued a statement that they will hold Target and Dollar General (a KKR holding) accountable for products they have found to have high lead quanities. According to Reuters: The Sierra Club has notified 10 U.S. companies that imported or distributed toys, children’s jewelry and other products from China containing potentially hazardous levels of lead that it will sue after 60 days if the firms don’t file reports with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Why this is important is that this press release, and potential lawsuit, seems to be the first real effort to treat the U.S. firm as the primary bearer of responsibility in their distribution of unsafe goods (This is not Dollar General’s first exposure to products with lead paint issues). In all other cases I ...

Sierra Club fights toxic detergent Ingredient
2007-06-07 04:57:00 Source: Environmental News NetworkThe Sierra Club has just asked the Federal Government to ban use on a toxic ingredient found in detergent. Nonylphenol ethoxylates, or NPE's are suspected to create estrogen in fish causing many fish to be both sexes. The fish are affected in these bodies of water: southern Great Lakes, the Potomac River watershed and the Southern California coast. Apparently these ingredients are far stricter in Canada and Europe. It's time the EPA does its job and heeds the warnings from this environmental group. I encourage you guys to take action and write letters to Congress telling them how you feel about these ingredients. They shouldn't be running off to the water without any regulation in my opinion.Technorati Tags: Water Pollution, Sierra Club, EPA http://www.theenvironmentalblog-.org/atom.xml

More commonly known as the "Open Fields" bill, this important legislation-- sponsored by Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Pat Roberts of Kansas in the Senate, and Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota and Tom Osborne of Nebraska in the House-- would open more than 20 million acres of prime hunting and fishing land to sportsmen."Open Fields" calls for an increase in Department of Agriculture funding to bolster existing state programs that provide access to private lands for hunters and anglers.
