Red Sox Stay in New England, Sign Maine
2012-01-28 03:39:00
Okay okay, it was a bad pun for the title. Just trying to have a little fun here. Boston Red Sox GM Ben Cherington has added some more pitching depth as he has signed free agent pitcher John Maine to a minor league contract. According to the media, there is no non-roster invitation to big league training camp that starts next month. According to Maine's agent, Rex Gary, the Red Sox want to use him as reliever if he were added to the roster. So unless something wonky happens in spring training, I'd expect Maine to start the season with the Triple Pawtucket Red Sox. Maine last pitched in the big leagues in May 20, 2010 with the New York Mets when he suffered a shoulder injury after facing one batter against the Washington Nationals. He subsequently had surgery and was out for the rest of the season. He made 11 starts for the Colorado Sky Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies in 2011. In those 11 starts, he was 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA. He left the team in June. With Maine ...

Red Sox To Sign Cody Ross
2012-01-24 03:46:00
With Carl Crawford possibly out for the beginning of the season and well, no sure thing in right field, the Boston Red Sox had a little bit of a conundrum as far as outfield depth. But now, that doesn't appear to be an issue. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com and confirmed by Alex Speier of WEEI.com and Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, the Red Sox have signed free agent outfielder Cody Ross to a one-year contract. Edes reports that the deal is worth $3 million plus performance incentives. Ross spent last season with San Francisco Giants after joining them in late August of 2010 off of waivers from the Florida Marlins. He played an integral part in helping the Giants win the 2010 World Series over the Texas Rangers. Before the signing of Ross, the Red Sox had only one starter from last year's outfield, Jacoby Ellsbury, healthy. Ryan Sweeney, who came over in the trade with Andrew Bailey for Josh Reddick, along with Darnell McDonald and even possibly Mike Aviles, were also in t...

Shanghai Rego International School. One-Off Or Sign Of Things To Come?
2012-01-19 16:28:00
At least once a month, I get an email from an English teacher in China wanting to start a language consulting business or school in China. I have a form response that summarizes what it will likely take and likely cost for them to do so legally. Virtually none of them had any idea of the difficulties and costs in starting such businesses. My law firm represents a good number of existing international schools in China and we are right now working on at least double the number of legal issues as usual for them. Today I saw a Shanghaiist post on "issues" being faced by Shanghai Rego International School. The post entitled, "Shanghai Rego International School now facing forced relocation," details how the school is being forced to move as its facility is being taken over for a public school: However an official surnamed Hua with the district's Education Bureau said there were no safety issues but said the school probably will have to relocate because the bureau has decided not to le...

At half a mile long and visible from space, the Studebaker arboreal sign outside New Carlisle, Indiana, is certainly the largest artifact of that company's existence, and as such, it's also the one that requires the most upkeep. Yet, surprisingly, the giant landmark has made it through the last 70-p

Red Sox Sign Aaron Cook To Minor League Deal
2012-01-09 17:05:00
As the Boston Red Sox found out during the 2011 season, you can never have enough starting pitching. According to multiple reports, the Red Sox have added some pitching depth by signing former Colorado Rockies pitcher Aaron Cook to a minor league deal. Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports that Cook will make $1.5 million if he makes the big league roster. Cook has spent his entire 10 year career as a member of the Rockies. In that time, he was 72-68 with a 4.53 ERA. He was hurt for part of the 2011 season and only made 18 appearances (17 starts). In those 18 appearances (17 starts), Cook was 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA. If Cook can rebound from his injuries, he could be a valuable addition to the Red Sox staff. At the very least, he could probably start the season with the Pawtucket Red Sox and be one of the first callups if an injury were to happen to any of the Red Sox starters. Angels Sign Jorge Cantu To Minor League Deal
2012-01-07 03:11:00
The Angels have signed Jorge Cantu to a minor league contract, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times (Twitter link).  Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported earlier today that the two sides were close to an agreement. Cantu, who turns 30 on January 30, posted a .194/.232/.285 slash line in 155 plate appearances for the Padres last season before being released and finishing the year with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.  Cantu has played mostly first and third base in his Major League career and is still capable of playing second on a limited basis.  Cantu isn't far removed from a very productive stint with the Marlins (a .283/.336/.462 line and 45 homers in 2008-09) and gives the Angels a more powerful option at third than incumbent Alberto Callaspo.  Cantu could also provide backup for Albert Pujols at first, given that Mark Trumbo is still recovering from a stress fracture in his foot and Kendrys Morales' health is a question mark after missi...

Mets To Sign Ronny Cedeno
2012-01-06 23:22:00
The Mets have agreed to sign free agent shortstop Ronny Cedeno to a one-year deal, tweets Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. The deal is worth $1.2MM and includes many incentives, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Peter E. Greenberg & Associates represents Cedeno, who figures to provide depth behind Ruben Tejada in New York. The Pirates declined Cedeno's option earlier this offseason, after he posted a .249/.297/.339 line in 454 plate appearances. The 28-year-old posted a strong 6.8 UZR/150 at shortstop this past season, though his career mark of -1.6 UZR/150 is slightly below average. The Red Sox and Pirates were linked to Cedeno earlier this offseason, while the Mets had interest in free agents such as Jack Wilson and Ryan Theriot.

Iwakuma spent four days in Seattle back in December according to Baker, during which time he met GM Jack Zduriencik and was shown around town. He didn't speak to Ichiro Suzuki before signing, says Baker (on Twitter). 7:35pm: The Mariners have agreed to sign right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma to a one-year contract worth $1.5MM, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick (all Twitter links). Athletics Sign Coco Crisp
2012-01-06 00:25:00
The Athletics have officially signed Coco Crisp to a two-year, $14MM deal that includes a club option for 2014, the team announced. News of the agreement ended 24 hours of rumors and speculation about Crisp's destination. He decided to return to Oakland despite interest from the Orioles, Cubs, Cardinals and many other teams. The deal will pay Crisp $6MM in 2012 and $7MM in 2013. The A's can exercise a $7.5MM option for 2014 or pay the center fielder a $1MM buyout. If the A's trade the Steve Comte client, he gets a one-time bonus of $250K. MLBTR's Tim Dierkes ranked Crisp 21st among MLB free agents at the beginning of the offseason. The switch-hitter led the American League with 49 stolen bases in 2011, hitting .264/.314/.379 with 27 doubles as Oakland's center fielder. The California native seemed to prefer West Coast teams, but explained in September that he was also looking to play on a winner and find a good "financial situation" for himself. Scott Hairston to re-sign with the Mets
2012-01-05 16:08:00
Photo by Michael BaronAccording to Joel Sherman the Mets have re-signed Scott Hairston to a major league deal. Just like last year Hairston is a solid pick-up, he can play all three outfield positions and hit off the bench for power.  His first season with the Mets wasn't great but compared to what's available he's a solid bench player.  The 31 y/o right handed hitter is a lifetime .244 hitter, he generally hits about 10 home runs and 12 doubles a season.  Last year he was just slightly below those numbers, in 79 games he hit .234 with 7 HRs and 7 doubles. While he's had a few years of 100 games, he's mostly been a bench player and averaged 80 games a season over his 8 year career.  He was known for his clutch hits off the bench for San Diego in 2010.As a reminder here's an interview I did with a popular Padres blog, Gas Lamp Ball last year when we originally signed Hairston...
