2008-06-10 04:43:00 This is a poster I have seen numerous times over the years posted on telephone poles along San Francisco’s Clement Street and the surrounding neighborhoods. I never really spent the time to decipher it’s message and based on the Mumia Abul Jamal look-alike, always assumed it was some badly executed attempt to promote some sad ...
Signs and Wonders: Can You Really Believe Paris Hilton?
2008-04-05 11:01:00 Each Wednesday (okay, this one is a little late), we’ll select an image that gives us some insight on religion in the world today. It’s a complicated subject and so I figured we’d have our inaugural image be on the complicated side: behold Paris Hilton with her guru. Earlier in March, Ms. Hilton — heiress, reality ...
Signs and Wonders - Snakes and Fakes!
2008-03-25 17:23:00 The topic of whether signs and wonders ceased has reared it's ugly head again and after much avoidance, I decided to do my own study. I stated publicly before that I never studied this, and that I was leaning towards 'no' they are not for today but I wanted to be sure. My reason was largely due to the countless false TV evangelists with their false miracles, manifestations, and scandals. Another reason is that I have never witnessed any miracles, not in the way some TV evangelists claim. So, being aware of my bias against signs and wonders, I knew I had to pray that the Lord would remove that bias, forget everything I've been taught or read, to not read into the text, and give me fresh eyes in which to read.Just so I'm clear, I do not claim to have a lock on the truth. I'm simply stating my findings and in the end, what I believe. I encourage you all to do your own study, ask that the Holy Spirit to teach you, and not to listen to me or anyone else.Who are the gifts for?An obje...
In Search Of Signs And Wonders
2008-03-17 16:43:00 Recently in India, as many as 50 people in Kottayam district went blind after staring at the sun for a prolonged period of time looking for an image of the “Virgin Mary”. Believing in false signs and wonders can be dangerous and even detrimental to one’s health as evidenced in the story. Yet throughout generations, man ...

Forcing the Hand, pt. 1
2008-02-01 04:42:00 Will?s not much of a people person. I?ve come to this conclusion after the latest in a series of menacing phone messages in which Will has implicated me as a key figure in a city-wide conspiracy to bury his burgeoning dog walking business by collaborating with the Department of Public Works and rival walking services ...
Forcing the Hand, pt. 2
2008-02-01 04:40:00 The following Sunday, Charles (who?s always game for crazy) and I show up to Gordon?s pet store with photos of our cats jammed in a manila envelope. As promised, Gordon, the last hippie in the Haight, mans the register in loose tie-dye, his thin ponytail crawling over one shoulder like something expecting to be fed. ...
Forcing the Hand, pt. 3
2008-02-01 04:36:00 Several days later another voice mail from Will is waiting on my machine. Clearly unhinged by my bout of self-sabotaging phone calls, he is making it clear that I?ve pressed too hard. ?Listen man,? he cautions, ?tell your lady friend to stop tearing down my signs all over the place, because that shit?s not cool!? ...

2008-01-15 05:29:00 The following Sunday Charles (always game for crazy) and I showed up to Gordon?s pet store with photos of our cats jammed in a manila envelope. As promised, Gordon, the last hippie in the Haight, stood behind the register in loose tie-dye, his thin ponytail crawling over one shoulder like something expecting to be fed. ...

Dixie
2007-11-20 23:49:00 My uncle snapped this marker a few weeks back while visiting family in Mississippi. Blunt, positively artless and shadowed by a snarl of poison ivy, this is about the saddest goddamn thing I?ve ever seen. Share This
Signs and Wonders
2007-10-15 06:27:00 The topic of “signs and wonders” is one that has been intriguing me more in the last year than ever before in my life. I have visited a church where an an older lady of a friend of mine had her lips anointed with oil and then began to speak in tongues and interpret these ...

Forcing the Hand, pt. 1
2007-09-30 03:42:00 So, I’m thinking that Will’s not much of a people person. I’ve come to this conclusion after the latest in a series of slightly menacing late-night phone calls in which Will has implicated me as a key-figure in a conspiracy to sink his burgeoning dog walking business by collaborating with the Department of Public Works ...

BBQ Season
2007-08-26 00:10:00 Saw this on a phone pole across the street from my house. The guy that posted it used to keep this huge oil drum grill chained to a tree in the parking lot of the local DMV until it (the grill, not the lot) disappeared one night. Now he’s pissed and ready to take on ...

Cheesy Rider! Rides Again?
2007-06-28 19:27:00 Following a reported sighting of a new “monkey poster” in the pet portrait series, I happened to stumble upon 2 more broadsides heartily taped to a Polk Street pole. Sadly there are no monkeys depicted. However, we do see for the first time a bear, winged cow, and a biker mouse named Cheesy Rider. What ...
Don?t Let The Tumor Stop Me!
2007-06-26 05:58:00 We’ve been trying to reach the artist responsible for the charmingly awful pet portraits for a couple weeks. However, after numerous unreturned calls, the artist remains an elusive and mysterious figure. Even more odd is the fact that we’ve come across two more posters affixed to telephone poles in our neighborhood. Why would he not ...
I Love My Cat
2007-06-09 01:55:00 I love my cat. She’s small and scrapy (undoubtedly the runt of the litter), has one fang that juts out of her mouth at a fourty-five degree angle, and when I wake up to the sound of her retching up hairballs and Ocean Fish Entre I can almost always be assured that the mess ...
Signs and Wonders
2007-01-26 00:02:02 Just a note to let you know that yesterday I guest posted at Crummy Church Signs, so if you want a quick fix of snarkiness, head over there. I tried my best to provide the same level of withering sarcasm that Joel does on a regular basis, but he's a tough act to follow. Seriously, I think Crummy Church Signs has the highest laugh:word count ratio of any site I've come across. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff these churches put on their signs. In other news, I'm probably going to discontinue the Dispatches in their current form. I think I'm going to try to implement some kind of "thought of the day" like Wolfe's Random Quote. By the way, if you ever wonder what I would blog about if I wasn't crippled by the inability to take anything seriously, head over to Wolfe's Musings. His blog pretty much reflects my thoughts on politics, current events, etc., but he's a little more in touch with reality than I am.Oh, and I'm hoping to make another Important Announcement v... |
