2009-01-18 07:17:00
Listen to a wide cross-section of Indians ? whether Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Parsee, Jain, Christian and so on - and you will frequently find in them a thorough disgust for India's endemically corrupt, gerontocratic and nepotistic leaders right across the political spectrum. In India political leadership, too often, yesterday's men (or mostly men) are still today's men.

Sikh pierde el caso en Canadá
2008-03-06 21:04:00

India must protest French ban on Sikh turban with Sarkozy
2008-01-25 20:52:00
India must strongly take up the ban on Sikhs wearing turban in French public schools during the visit of President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy. It is true that France follows a different secular model. But the Sikh religious identity is also unique and for them turban is an essential part of their identity. Ironically the fact that we have a Sikh as Prime Minister, who may not be able to assert his religious identity because he is on a constitutional post. The government and other top functionaries can make a strong case. But the Sikh community must not be made pay for it. If Manmohan Singh feels uncomfortable, his government and other parties--or a joint delegation, can present the case. It's an emotional thing, which most of us understand. And, at least, the Sikh children who grow up in France, shouldn't get the feeling that their religion is not in sync with rules of the modern world. Sikhs have fought in France in the World Wars and the adherents of the religion are now more spr...

Sikhs : Ceremonial Weapons and Religious Rights
2007-11-04 03:26:00
A delegation of Sikhs in the UK is demanding that parliament give Sikhs the right to carry the kirpan or ceremonial dagger into high security areas, such as the European Parliament. Kirpans aren't simply for show, they are weapons. The size varies but some can be as long as 15 inches. In the past Sikh leaders have made calls for equality. Well I don't mean to rock their boat, but the demand to transport a dagger into high security areas when no Muslim, Christian or Atheist is accorded the same right, boils down to a demand for special privilege. The Sikh argument is that the kirpan is an "article of faith" and has to be carried on the person at all times. However there are N. American Sikhs who wear suits and favor short hair and a clean shaven look. Some take the view that these "articles of faith" are symbolic and that it is unnecessary to carry the actual objects around in order to live up to the values the symbols represent. Some realism is called for on the part of religions th...
