Silly asthma questions
2009-06-24 17:33:00
As asked by Physicians when I’m in the hospital and ranked in order of dislike. ( I’m sure my fellow lungers can relate) #1) What triggered your asthma attack this time? #2) Why does your asthma get so bad? #3) Do you think anxiety makes your asthma worse? #4) Do you know how to check your peak flows ? #5) What can we do to keep you out of the hospital? #6) Have you ever been intubated for your asthma? #7) Why did you wait so long to come in for treatment? And this is how I usually answer them. #1) I don’t know. #2) I have bad asthma. #3) Suffocating to death tends to make me a little anxious . #4) I know more about pulmonary functions then you can ever hope to know. #5) How about taking care of me when I’m NOT sick. #6) I hold the worlds record. #7) Because I hate answering stupid questions like these. Do you detect a little sarcasm?

Too Serious For The Trib, Too Silly For Catalyst
2009-06-24 15:27:00
Some of the folks in new media land are fascinated by my efforts to bridge nonprofit and for-profit blog worlds, and if that interests you at all then you will want to check out this interview I did at BeatBlogging.org (Russo bringing District 299 to Tribune's ChicagoNow). "While it may seem paradoxical that Russo's work would fit in on a both a serious education site and an aggressive new media site, it's really more a testament to how Russo is able to take a serious topic and make it interesting and conversational." I hope so, but we'll see.  It's only been a few days. ...
Boycott the Census? That's silly.
2009-06-22 15:00:00
We're coming up on 2010 and that means it's time for the U.S. census. But there is a group of evangelical pastors telling undocumented immigrants they shouldn't be counted, according to a recent story in the Los Angeles Times. They are doing this as a form of reverse protest to call on the Obama Administration to push for comprehensive immigration reform.Huh? Yes. That's right. They want undocumented immigrants to have the opportunity to legalize but they don't want them counted in the U.S. census. It doesn't make any sense to me either. So I called up Flavia Jimenez with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and asked her what she thought. She is the coordinator of their upcoming census...

Well, today the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is sponsoring a Day of Silence where at schools across the country, “students ...

AIG Outrage And A Silly Repug (S)Mack-Down
2009-03-18 22:26:00
(Sorry, people ? this is the best I can do without Photoshop.)This story from HuffPo brings us the following from U.S. House Repug Connie Mack The Fourth of Florida?"I've had serious concerns about Secretary Geithner from the moment he was nominated. In the months since, he has shown us time and again why he was the wrong choice for this critical post."This week's news on the AIG bonus scandal is but the latest fiasco under his watch and he has lost the confidence of the American people."Quite simply, the Timothy Geithner experience has been a disaster. The Treasury Department is in disarray. Taxpayer dollars are being wasted. America's economy hangs in the balance. America needs and deserves a Treasury Secretary who can truly lead us forward."Timothy Geithner should either resign or be fired for the good of the country, and President Obama should nominate a new Treasury Secretary with the experience and leadership skills America deserves."Far be it for me to defend Treasury Secr...

They had fun chasing the water and trying to catch it as it jumped from one section to another. Adam gets his hands on the water here. But the silliest monkey of all was grandma, who just had to get in on the action. She finally got a handful of the water. Friday, December 12th, 2008: The second snowfall and buying silly things in
2008-12-12 15:31:00
What I think:The second snowfall, errm, fell on Helsingborg. You may remember my post about the first one of this season. Some mystery joker, who probably lives in the building opposite ours, "wrote" in the snow.It appears that this may now be a regular occurrence, as I just looked out the window a few minutes ago and saw this:Yes, it's the word SEN upside-down. This is a bit more cryptic than the "STFU OMFG" we saw last time. Sen is Swedish for "late", but it's also commonly used as a shortened version of senare, which means later. (Here's a little Swedish lesson for you: sen, senare, senast mean "late", "later", "latest", respectively. Educational blog, or what!?)While I did indeed wonder why someone would want to write "STFU" and "OMFG" in the snow, I could almost see the point. I took as a kind of a "No way! It can't be snowing, get outta here!" type of thing. But this one's got me baffled. Is it some kind of message to one of my neighbours (US/CAN: neighbors) across the way...

How Silly Putty Was Invented
2008-11-20 04:38:00
Silly Putty was accidentally invented by James Wright of General Electric when he dropped boric acid into silicone oil. He was looking for a substitute for artificial rubber. GE supplied the newly discovered dilatant compound to researchers around the world. None found a use for it, but they all loved playing with it. [wikipedia]

Suppliers Silly to Sabotage Standards?

More Silly Bias from CNN

While watching CNN while doing cardio, I noted yet again obvious bias of that “news” network, with Wolf Blitzer dwelling forever on a story that even the network’s own Jeffrey Toobin, obsequious legal court jester to the media elite, dismissed. Silly Monkey Stories - Dova at Miss Liz's Wedding
2008-06-03 01:47:00
Dova's preschool teacher Liz graciously (bravely) invited her students to attend her wedding ceremony.  Amazingly enough, the six kids who attended (3 and 4-year-olds), were very quiet and relatively well-behaved.  There was no talking or running in the aisles.  Of course I had to give a pep talk ahead of time since this was the very first time Dova set foot inside of a church.  And it was a perfect opportunity to practice photography under extremely low light conditions. I got to use all three of my lenses! Just because the kids were relatively well-behaved didn't mean there was no monkey behavior from this girl.  I made up a new saying for it, "You can dress her up, but you can't take the monkey out of the girl."  Here's proof: Using the edge of the pew as a foot rest. Climbing under the pew (see lower left) Climbing up the wrong side of the steps and onto the wall. Dova can't resist a good handrail to climb on. Taking a &quo...
"A Night of Lucha Libre" or "Why am I still just a silly gr
2008-05-31 18:29:00
You would think that after four years I would at least start to "get it". The flow of life in Mexico is very different than in Upstate New York, of course. I have no grand illusions of changing the way things work here just to suit my standards. I have made many adjustments and concessions to my normal and customary ways of doing things. I have learned to be patient. I have learned that only I find value in my time. What I haven't learned is how the heck everyone seems to always know the proper protocol for things and I don't. Our recent outing to an evening of Mexican professional wrestling, Lucha Libre, really drove this point home for me. Our evening of Lucha Libre was a last minute affair "organized" by friends and fellow ex-pats John and Libby. While, the last minute notice made it easy to blow off, I know that this opportunity only comes around once a year, and what the heck, my kids would really get a kick out of it. So, fi...

Webb, Lee have numbers that are silly good
2008-05-16 12:51:00
Your starting pitchers for the All-Star Game? Brandon Webb and Cliff Lee get the early nod. Their numbers are you-gotta-be-kiddin'-me silly. One has won all eight of his starts, and the other has an ERA that's barely noticeable with a magnifying glass according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Things could change, of course. These pitchers could mix in a wild pitch or two in future starts. But for now, Webb and Lee are tops in their respective leagues. Lee entered his last start with an 0.96 ERA. When he was done pitching, it went down. To 0.81. He threw seven scoreless innings - at Yankee Stadium, by the way, the site of this year's All-Star Game - and is 6-0 for the Indians. He has surrendered earned runs in two of his starts. You want command? In 44²⁄³ innings, he has two walks. As in T-W-O. He has 39 strikeouts. He hasn't walked a batter in 28 straight innings. The Diamondbacks' right-hander is the fourth pitcher in history to start two seasons 8-0. But this y...
