2008-05-09 07:32:00 The Yuan Also Rises blog has a nice post up on China's current visa situation (at least as of this week). The post is entitled "Clear as Mud," and, among other things, it notes of reports that China visas may be easier to obtain in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand than in England and Hong Kong. I used to almost always get my visa in Seoul by going to the Chinese Embassy there in the morning, producing an airplane ticket showing my flight leaving that afternoon, and pleading rather nicely for a visa before my plane would take off. I think the longest I have ever had to wait was one hour. Maybe I will have to go back to that when my multiple entry visa expires in September or maybe the tightened requirements for visas will have ended by then.

Nightengale also has a comment from Mariners President Chuck Armstrong, who admitted he'd like Griffey to retire a Mariner. Griffey makes $12.5MM this year and has a $16.5MM option for '09 with a $4MM buyout (much of the money is deferred). It's unknown whether Griffey would require that the '09 option be exercised in the event of a trade, but that wouldn't be surprising. But he's been just as bad as Gagne, posting a 5.51 ERA while allowing tons of baserunners. Two veterans remain with acceptable ERAs - Salomon Torres at 2.95 and Guillermo Mota at 2.40. Torres seems much more likely to become the fill-in closer. He holds a big WHIP advantage, 1.36 to Mota's 1.53 (not that 1.36 is good). This leaves the Braves with question marks in the rotation beyond Tim Hudson, Tom Glavine, and Jair Jurrjens. The fifth starter job is often in flux for a lot of teams, but it seems the Braves need to figure out one more long-term starter for the year. The Braves do have some arms to bring up from Triple A, namely lefties Jo-Jo Reyes and Chuck James. Reyes has a 1.17 ERA in five starts. In my opinion, the Braves need an innings eater if anything. Two trade possibilities come to mind: Joe Blanton and Kevin Millwood. I wonder if Billy Beane would demand top prospect Jason Heyward.
