Best Ever Skeptic Comment Against Alien Life
2008-06-03 02:56:00 This is a real zinger...In 2000, a group based in the Cardiff Centre for Astrobiology in Wales declared they had found alien microbes in a Leonid fireball based on an infrared spectra of the organic material. Skeptic Matt Genge had this to say:The infrared spectra of the Leonid meteors are not evidence for bacteria, norare the infrared spectra of comets," Genge said. He added that the data show afeature that is common in all organic material."If you took me, put me in an oven, dried me at 300 degrees and then took myinfrared spectra, I'd have [this feature] too. This would certainly not beevidence that you'll find Matt Genges on comets.SOURCE: Space.com

Real estate skeptic helps stop Michael Jackson ranch foreclosure
2008-05-12 01:45:00 Long-term readers of this blog will recall much discussion two years ago or so about investor Tom Barrack’s late 2005 interview with Forbes magazine. In the piece, he thought real estate was pretty much toast, saying, “There’s too much money chasing too few good deals, with too much debt and too few brains.”) Well, guess who’s back dabbling in high-profile, California property? Read this press release … Michael Jackson today announced that the foreclosure sale of his Neverland Ranch property scheduled for this week has been cancelled by Colony Capital, LLC, which just acquired the existing loan on Neverland Ranch from an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group. Mr. Jackson said, “I am pleased with recent developments involving Neverland Ranch and I am in discussions with Colony and Tom Barrack with regard to the Ranch and other matters that would allow me to focus on the future.” Need background on the...

Book Notes: Letters to a Skeptic
2008-01-21 19:44:00 Letters to a Skeptic: A Son Wrestles with His Father's Questions about Christianity is a solid little book of Christian apologetics by Dr. Gregory A. Boyd, an evangelical theologian, and his father, Edward K. Boyd. It reproduces their correspondence over a three-year period, during which the elder Boyd asked his son nearly all of the basic questions that potential believers face (e.g., why would a good God permit suffering? how do I know the Bible is true? how can Jesus' death atone for anyone's sins?). At the end of the process, his father became a Christian. Though lacking some of the personality of C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, still the gold standard for popular apologetics in my opinion, Letters to a Skeptic covers an enormous amount of ground in less than 200 pages, and its conversational tone makes it a quick read. I would definitely give this book to anyone who is interested in following Christ but stymied by intellectual objections. The Boyds' dialogue starts wit...

If you missed the previous parts go here.Orange: RibbingGreen: Gavin1) "Green-house effect"I am pleased that you now agree that a cloud is not a green-house gas. A progress in contrast to your initial statement:"While the dominant greenhouse gas is indeed water vapour, CO2 is asubstantial contributor. The rough proportions are 50% WV, 25% clouds, and 20% CO2 (with other small absorbers like O3, CH4, N2O, aerosols etc.making up the difference)"The statement you quote was in response to a question about the'greenhouse effect". I am disappointed that you choose to playsemantic games instead of simply accepting that your original claimwas baseless.More important for me is that I have heard prof. Global Warming Skeptic Invades the New York Times
2008-01-01 20:15:00 John Tierney has written a great article on the coming year of global warming alarmism. He claims that whatever happens, In 2008, a 100 Percent Chance of Alarm: Today?s interpreters of the weather are what social scientists call availability entrepreneurs: the activists, journalists and publicity-savvy scientists who selectively monitor the globe looking for newsworthy evidence of a new form of sinfulness, burning fossil fuels. A year ago, British meteorologists made headlines predicting that the buildup of greenhouse gases would help make 2007 the hottest year on record. At year?s end, even though the British scientists reported the global temperature average was not a new record ? it was actually lower than any year since 2001 ? the BBC confidently proclaimed, ?2007 Data Confirms Warming Trend.? I shall use the same order, but I have a feeling thatit is really the second issue that is our bone of contention.1) The relative roles of water vapour and carbon dioxide. The dipole moment of the water molecule is unusually strong (1.85 D) and the CO2 has no dipole moment, so it only contributes to IR-absorption by vibrations. Thus one H2O absorbs IR radiation much stronger than one CO2. Furthermore, under normal conditions close to sea level, there are about 100 times more H2O:s than CO2:s.Admittedly this proportion is reduced with altituded, over deserts etc. From this starting point I claimed that 20% from CO2 is too high.As I mentionened in my previous mail, it is basically wrong to include clouds as a GH agent. It is not a gas, and their chief effectis to cool. Yet, if officials of UN have decided that clouds are a green-house gas, wh...

What will take to convince a skeptic? Part 2
2007-12-14 21:15:00 In What will it take to convince a skeptic?, I presented an email debate about climate change between two scientists. Here their discussion continues. Dr Gavin Schmidt from RealClimate comments further on physics professor Carl Gustaf Ribbing's previous remarks.Orange: RibbingGreen: GavinAn indication for this is that people have been doing atmospheric heat transfer calculations for 50 years or more. In these calculations "Model atmospheres" withdifferent amounts of water vapour have been used, but to my knowledge no alternative CO2-content has ever been used. That's because people know pretty well what the CO2 content is at any one time. 50 years ago it was 315 ppmv (now it closer to 385 ppmv of course). In contrast, the distribution of water vapour is both more uncertain and much more variable at any one point. I'm not sure this is at all relevant to the point at hand though.I therefore insist that that the contribution of CO2 is less than 20%. I have a transmittance spectrum fo...

What will take to convince a skeptic?
2007-12-12 21:35:00 A friend of mine who is a scientist in Uppsala recently composed a rather provocative letter to the editor in the local newspaper. In his letter, Tor Kihlberg claims that he has encountered a considerable amount of people in the scientific community of Uppsala that are still denying the threat of climate change. Their denial, he claims, is based on psychological mechanisms and not on scientific facts. He turns to the skeptics and asks them what kind of proof they would require to be convinced and if they finally were, would they then be ready to change their lifestyles. A bunch of distinguished professors took the bate and wrote angry replies. One of them was Carl-Gustaf Ribbing. Tor didn't confront Ribbing's arguments upfront, instead he rather slyly challenged Ribbing to send his statements to the IPCC crew of RealClimate. Ribbing took on the challenge and wrote to RealClimate. Climate scientist Gavin Schmidt was very quick to respond.---------------------------------------...

Thik Chicken-Hole Friars Download
2007-11-22 20:04:00 Today begins the official holiday season. Which means in-laws. Which means that, to deal with in-laws, I will get drunk tomorrow morning around 9 and hopefully not meet back up with sobriety until January 1st.Here's another great one from the 90s to hold you over on your holiday weekend. Thik Chicken were a Birmingham band, so I'm obligated to stick up for them. Maybe it's just the holidays and Chicago's too fucking cold so I'm thinking of home. Thik Chicken were considered a "File 13" band ("File 13 is just a name for music from a certain group of bands from Birmingham, Alabama. We used it to put out our own tapes and records and what not. Since we never made any money to speak of, you wouldn't call it a business"), along with Lamenstra, the Dougs, and a few others. The most recent incarnation is Skeptic?, who were featured on the last podcast. The band had a demo tape before this that I've heard but don't have, and this 7" was the last thing they recorded. Call me a skeptic....
2007-11-19 14:57:00 Synthesizing reams of data from its three previous reports, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the first time specifically points out important risks if governments fail to respond: melting ice sheets that could lead to a rapid rise in sea levels and the extinction of large numbers of species brought about by even moderate amounts of warming, on the order of 1 to 3 degrees. So a change in temperature of 1 to 3 degrees will wipe out large numbers of animal and plant species (there is some suggestion that it would be up to 1/3 of all life)? Now I am not a scientist... but it is these sorts of statements that actually solidify by belief that these people are out of their minds with exaggeration and sky is falling paranoia. Again... one has to only go back to the historical temperature charts that were available less than a decade ago to see that these same scientists believed that this planet had sustained long periods of time with average temperatur...

Senator Boxer will be heading the congressional "fact-finding" trip to ostensibly see first-hand the alleged effects of manmade global warming on Greenland and how it is going to theoretically cause catastrophic sea-level rise in New York, Florida, and other coastal areas. My name is Grindy and I approve this message! I've noticed fashion goes to some interesting sources for inspiration. I'm a big believer in "Nothing new under the sun" and think it's, "All been done before." So Fashion has gone to the Military ad nauseam, they've tapped into skilled trades and fairy tales. So where next? Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Ninjas. I know what you're thinking... Ninjas and fashion don't mix. I disagree, they were probably the first people to really go out on a limb with the "basic black", perhaps they took it a little too far but I digress. Regardless, I think Tabi are going to be the next big thing! The separation of toes 1-2 and 3-5 (3-6 in the south) will be all the rage! 2007-04-06 21:36:00 Author: Eric Subject: Easter Prime Marketing Time for Skeptics Posted: Fri Apr 06, 2007 2:36 pm (GMT -5) Easter Prime Marketing Time for Skeptics By Rachel Zoll It's a predictable part of the Easter season: The period of reflection on the Crucifixion and Resurrection has become a popular time for marketers to roll out works — from the scholarly to the sensational — that challenge Christianity's core beliefs. In the last several years, churchgoers have been hit with a steady stream of claims that Jesus didn't die on the cross, that he had a wife and kids, and that the Bible is a fraud. Christians across a broad spectrum of belief are angered by the trend. They accept the freedom to question religion, but wonder why the assaults come during their faith's most sacred days. "Why are they doing it now and why are they doing it in such a provocative way?" asked the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit writer and author of "My Life With the Saints." "...

Less Despair, but More Skepticism
2007-03-16 21:50:00 My most recent post on the Cardinals‘ prospects this season has generated a fair amount of hate mail. Most of it was focused around my claim that Walt Jocketty “allowed the Cardinals to bleed talent when they desperately needed to add it”. The “talent” the Cardinals lost this winter was pitching talent — namely Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, and Jason Marquis. You might assume that I was suggesting that Jocketty needed to do more to replace that pitching talent, but in fact that isn’t really the case. I’m pretty comfortable with not paying the markup for pitching this winter, and I’m pretty comfortable with how their rotation is shaking out. In fact PECOTA projects the Cardinals to allow the second-fewest runs in the National League, behind only the Padres, who have their huge park working for them. The pitching is fine. But I think Jocketty desperately needed to add some offense. Here’s the thing. If you’re going to go wi...

Skepticism & Despair: St. Louis Cardinals
2007-03-16 08:47:00 So now the word is out that two-thirds of the Cardinals‘ starting outfield — Jim Edmonds and Juan Encarnacion — is likely to begin the season on the DL. I don’t want to make too much of this. Neither player is expected to be out for all that long, though you have to wonder about Edmonds, who is recovering from two separate injuries (shoulder, foot), is 37 years old, and is no stranger to the Disabled List. Still, these injuries are going to expose just how top-heavy the Cardinals are. The story I linked to above suggests that the Opening Day outfield might be Chris Duncan in left, Preston Wilson in center, and Scott Spiezio in right, which is not only a below-average offensive trio but might be the worst defensive outfield since the 1997 Oakland A’s. I don’t know whether injuries tend to snowball, but I do know they’re a bigger problem when neither your bench nor your farm system is ready to produce adequate replacements. From my point of vi...
