European Union Skeptical of Closure Case In Turkey
2008-05-01 15:49:00
There is growing concern in many European nations over efforts by defenders of secularism in Turkey to use the court system in an effort to destroy the ruling Justice and Development Party(AKP) whose leaders are accused of seeking to impose a strict Muslim code of behavior on the nation. Guther Krichbaum, chair of an EU ...

Skeptical monkey
2008-04-08 11:52:00
Sent in by Ted GoasI hope my testimonial is short and sweet. I was raised by two educated, traditional parents in the New York metro area of the U.S. I was introduced to, schooled in, and eventually confirmed Lutheran. At no point was I ever enthusiastic about my religion or going to church. But like many others I took religious teachings at face value, went through the motions and believed what I read in the Bible. But then I went to graduate school, which turned out to be my turning point. There I learned to question things, filter out bad information, ask for proof, and basically ask “Says who?”During this time I watched a documentary and heard this quote from Michael Shermer: “Smart people come to revisit things they learned for not-smart reasons,” or something to that effect. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.It made me realize that children can’t control how they’re raised. But we can re-evaluate what we were conditioned to think. After doing so, my s...

Is this happiness, I wonder Or just a spell you’ve put me under? Is now the time to sing and smile And leave the bleakness for a while? Be skeptical
2008-03-20 15:52:00
Few days back I received an email claiming link between drinking cold drink after meal and cancer. Another friend did some research and responded with another email claiming the above is a myth.Today I received another email forwarded by a friend on some claims that some hawkers melt plastic such as drinking straws or plastic container into hot oil so as to have fried crispy snacks remain crispy for hours. I didn't manage to find strong arguments that this is untrue, but ... may be that's because it was just reported in a newspaper quite recently, near end of February. Or may be it is true, but I doubt so.I don't mind reading such emails. False information is still a piece of information. However, I mostly don't forward them to others. Especially if the article encourage one to do so.In this information explosion era, we have to be skeptical with all these information. Not only those myth-like information, but also those myth-buster type. Take for example, in the above first ca...
Justices Appear Skeptical Of D.C.?s Handgun Ban
2008-03-19 05:56:00
A majority of the Supreme Court indicated a readiness yesterday to settle decades of constitutional debate over the meaning of the Second Amendment by declaring that it provides an individual right to own a gun for self-defense. Such a finding could doom the District of Columbia’s ban on private handgun possession, the country’s toughest gun-control ...

U.S. reportedly skeptical about the dirty bomb allegation
2008-03-05 22:47:00
ABC News has reported that U.S. authorities remain deeply skeptical about Colombia's charges that FARC was seeking to obtain materials for a dirty bomb. According to ABC, U.S. law enforcement officials want to scrutinize the entire cache of Raul Reyes-related computer documents to assess them for their impact on U.S. drug trafficking cases against FARC. Clearly the U.S. will also want to review the computer data bases to assess for themselves whether the data backs up Colombia's claims about FARC...(read more)

Barbara Walters and The View Skeptical of Sam Lutfi Call, Britney Spears in

This is why I LOVE Barbara Walters. Because, when she got a call from Sam Lutfi (yes SHE got the call, not her calling him), in which Lutfi tells her that Britney Spears is now in “treatment”, guess what Walters says? “I don’t know if anybody is telling the truth or not telling the truth.” Couldn’t ...

Supreme Court Skeptical Of Lethal Injection Challenge
2008-01-07 22:59:00
The Supreme Court gave a skeptical hearing today to lawyers challenging the use of lethal injections to carry out executions in the United States. The lawyers argued to the court that the three-chemical compound used in the injection causes inmates to die a painful death. If these three drugs are “properly administered,” the inmate should die ...
Skeptical Scientists Urge World To ‘Have the Courage to Do Nothing' At UN
2007-12-13 01:38:00
Global warming nut jobs are dealt yet another embarrassing blow. Read the whole thing.BALI, Indonesia - An international team of scientists skeptical of man-made climate fears promoted by the UN and former Vice President Al Gore, descended on Bali this week to urge the world to "have the courage to do nothing" in response to UN demands. Lord Christopher Monckton, a UK climate researcher, had a blunt message for UN climate conference participants on Monday."Climate change is a non-problem. The right answer to a non problem is to have the courage to do nothing," Monckton told participants."The UN conference is a complete waste of our time and your money and we should no longer pay the slightest attention to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,)" Monckton added. You know the good thing about not believing in global warming is similar to the good thing about believing in God: even if you're wrong it doesn't matter. In the case of God - if it did turn out that everythi...
Skeptical: Only 18% Of Americans Believe Intel Report On Iran
2007-12-07 21:07:00
I am glad to see that I’m not alone in my skepticism of the recently released N.I.E. concerning Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The report claims that Iran halted it’s covert nuclear weapons program back in 2003. However, since it took U.S. intelligence more than a decade to discover they had such a program in the first ...

Are Your Customers Scared, Scarred Or Skeptical?
2007-11-28 00:00:00
Whether you are marketing on-line or off-line, your potential customers are scared, scarred, and skeptical these days; meaning they are overwhelmed. Consumers are becoming resistant to sales messages. In the mid 80’s, a store could run a “20% off” sale and people would flock in. Then the big stores got into the discounting mentality. Now it ...
The Media is Skeptical But Paul's Supporters Believe He Could Have a Real S
2007-11-19 00:56:00
Pundits and rivals have dismissed Rep. Ron Paul's presidential campaign as a joke, saying he's a fringe candidate with no shot of getting elected. Dr. Paul indeed may not win the White House, but the plain-spoken libertarian is now laughing ? all the way to the bank. Riding the strength of his zealous supporters, his campaign pulled in more than $4.2 million in a Web-based fundraiser Nov. 5, breaking the single-day GOP record. That record may not stand for long. Dr. Paul's backers plan a fundraising blitz Dec. 16 with a goal of $10 million ? $100 donations from 100,000 people ? in commemoration of the Boston Tea Party, which helped spark the American Revolution. Dr. Paul wants a similar seismic change in today's society. "The message of freedom is powerful," said Jesse Benton, spokesman for Dr. Paul's campaign. "It's unifying. People are getting our message at a time when the government is moving away from personal freedoms." Flush with cash, Dr. Paul now aims to make in...

Despite Gain in Jobs Data, Wall Street Is Skeptical
2007-11-03 18:47:00
A robust employment report offered investors a pleasant surprise yesterday, but some thought it was too good to be true. The economy added 166,000 jobs in October, the fastest pace in five months, the Labor Department said. But anxious investors cast doubt on the report and sent stock markets down much of the day as the outlook for fourth quarter remained cloudy. Analysts said the job gain in October meant that the Federal Reserve would be less likely to cut interest rates again when it meets in December despite fears of rising energy prices, weaker spending and a worsening housing slump. "Sooner or later these big problems out there - credit, housing, and oil - are going to catch up with us," said Nigel Gault, chief United States economist at Global Insight. "We can't keep running forever on this two-track economy, where housing collapses and everything else just carries on like nothing else is happening."

Skeptical About Pennsylvania Foreclosure Homes?
2007-07-31 19:46:00
By the end of 2007, more than one million home owners will lose their homes to foreclosure, adding to the million foreclosure homes recorded last year. This presumption was actually based on the number of subprime loans taken out during the most recent housing boom and with the poor performance of the subprime loan industry; most states are scrambling to reduce the foreclosure numbers.
Addressing Skeptical Concerns

I started answering a comment from Grit on a previous post here, titled “For Some, Doubt Is Enough”, and it grew quite large, so I’m just posting it here: The problem is not with people being willing to accept credible arguments, but, rather, with knowing which arguments are credible. I can accept that. May Tome just has ...

Europeans Highly Skeptical About The iPhone

Reality-Based Community Skeptical of Discovery of Jesus' Tomb
2007-03-08 12:31:00
As news broke of James Cameron's supposed discovery of Jesus' tomb, most in the reality-based community reacted with skepticism. While some Christians acknowledged that Cameron's claim challenged the very core of their faith, most atheist bloggers appeared to regard the news with minimal interest. At first glance, this might appear surprising. After all, wouldn't atheists be expected to celebrate the death knell of Christianity? As you have almost certainly heard by now, the big news involved claims by filmmaker James Cameron that his upcoming documentary on the Discovery Channel reveals the tomb of Jesus and his family. This claim, if it can be shown to be true, would challenge the Christian dogma surrounding the physical resurrection of Jesus. So why are many atheists dismissing this news as being relatively unimportant? I believe the answer lies in our rationalist nature. I'm not here to claim that atheists are necessarily rationalists, but I readily identify myself as such. A...

SHANNON, Ireland (AP) - Americans’ skeptical view of the Iraq war won’t change until they see progress there, but the United States won’t “pull the plug” on the conflict, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said. Rice would not detail any backup strategy if President Bush’s new plan to turn around the war comes up short, or if the Iraq government fails to hold up its end. Full Story Here: Rice: U.S. Won’t ‘Pull the Plug’ on Iraq Well, it took almost 4 years for THIS plan to be hatched, don’t rush ‘em, they’ll think of something, it’ll come to ‘em eventually, it might be called alternate plan ‘B’, version 359 but it’ll happen and right up until the time the movers are there taking his things OUT of the White House, Bush will STILL be telling us how this is going to work and the Iraqis are only 3 or 4 billion dollars and another thousand or so AMERICAN lives away from standing up on t...
Republicans growing more skeptical of the President
2006-09-18 16:09:02
The New York Times had an interesting article on Friday.Mr. Bush has plenty of supporters in this Denver suburb and the surrounding cities, an evenly divided swing district that is a bellwether in the battle for control of the House. But interviews over the last three days here found Republicans, Democrats and independents all expressing degrees of skepticism about Mr. Bush?s motives in delivering a set of high-profile speeches on terrorism and the war in Iraq two months before Election Day.If the Republicans want to chart a new course on Iraq, Chuck Hagel is the the man for the job.
