Sketching is Offically Back, Finally
2008-09-17 18:01:00
I have always been saying here on Design Sojourn that sketching is an important design and communication skill to have, I would say even more than any CAD skill of sorts. Importantly, in the last few years, I’ve seen more and more design companies make it a prerequisite in their new hires to have ...

|Muse|um: Sketching in the West Pavilion
2007-11-30 10:27:00
On a bleak January evening, nearly one year past, a modern art survey course brought me to the 19th century gallery of the Getty’s West Pavilion for the very first time. Strolling the parquet floors I made my selection from the works that punctuated the formal walls of forest green. Here are sketches made on that occasion (alongside the originals), as well as an excerpt from the final paper they accompanied.“It is from contrasts that Degas draws an art, translating the society of the late nineteenth century onto paper and canvas. His eye discerns the falsity and irony behind the delicate splendor of Parisian life, with its glittering opera halls, flurried movement, and colorful ballets. His pieces juxtapose ephemeral beauty and grotesque reality; beside the grandeur of flickering stage light and dancers on point are shadowy faces and strained expressions. Degas’ ability to capture these subtleties transcends medium as demonstrated by the sweeping strokes of chalk pastel in Wai...

Espen Sketching Character
2007-11-05 18:46:00
My son Espen is three and a half years old now and is very interested in drawing. I mentioned in my previous post how I like sitting around sketching with my Faber-Castell PITT artist pen. Awhile back, Espen saw me use it and wanted one himself. So I gave him one and he’s been using it quite a bit. Last night, when I was sketching in my recliner, he came up on my lap and took over. Here’s a character he drew. I thought he did a really good job! Technorati Tags: Art, Drawing, Sketching
Sketching With PITT Brush Pen
2007-11-05 04:09:00
I’ve mentioned this before (a long time ago), but one of my favorite things is to sit in my comfy chair in front of the TV, watching a good movie and sketching in my sketch book. I use a Faber-Castell PITT artist pen of the B variety for this. It’s a really high-quality, fairly cheap brush pen with a flexible point to it that that creates very nice line that can be varied from thick to thin like a normal brush. An excellent exercise that I recommend to other artists, is to use this pen to draw things (characters, scenery– whatever) without a pencil sketch underneath. I’ve found that it really increases my precision and efficiency when I then start drawing real projects. I’ve posted a couple of examples above. I usually can’t draw like this (that is, inking directly without a sketch) on real projects because it leaves no room for error. But as an exercise, it’s really useful. And, above all, very enjoyable! One of the things I recommend t...
Sketching on the Cintiq
2007-10-23 04:08:00
I’m really hard at work on my book, so there’s not much time for anything else nowadays. I’m getting really into it, and I’m especially enjoying working on the Cintiq. One of the huge advantages I’ve found in recent weeks as I switched from using an Intuos tablet to the Cintiq, is how much more accurately I can draw now. I save a lot of time not messing around and drawing very precise lines instead. Here’s another panel… Technorati Tags: Art, Books, Children’s Books, Cintiq, Comics, Digital Art, Drawing, Graphic Novel, Tablet, Wacom
Sketching Aloud
2007-10-02 06:50:00
Talking to the ladders. In spits of paint as we reach for the ceiling with dirty brushes. No more mirrors overhead. No more rivers overlooking the ruthless saviors in our pants. We're undone. Woken up from dreams we'll never finish. Tangled in the sails of this sinking boat. Aching arms reaching for the naked spots above us. Arguing with the staircase. In torn sails. The democratic
Good Books on Design Sketching

Good sketching skills is an important design process, truly needed in the design industry today. Creepy Sketching
2007-07-03 04:44:00
I was looking through a few of my old sketchbooks today, and I came across this page:This is by far the creepiest page in any of my books. Want to know why? It's not the eyes, the badly shaded lips, or the hand with the hole in it; no, it's the presence of what appears to be a porn star. Not just any one either, a 1970's porn star. Observe:Of course, being the sick individual that I am, a backstory must be created, albeit a short one.I'm sorry in advance. The year was 1971,Tim Dongnot was then living in a small apartment in Berkley. He had recently been laid off from There's a Book in My Hands!, a small bookstore located in Richmond, after he was found snorting cocaine out of Nancy Drew novels. So, Tim was now going through numerous jobs, in an attempt to find a steady flow of income. One day, while on a pizza delivery call, Tim had sexual relations with a 56-year old heroin addict named Gertrude Yontel. Shortly after this event, Dongnot quit his pizza gig and set out to becom...

Sketching, and Loving It
2007-04-07 05:03:00
The photo in this entry is Splendid Rosy. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. While exploring my options in sketching projects, I have a few ideas formed about what I want to do. Most recently I have been doing sketches of places more than anything, just when I have the opportunity to focus on my surroundings. I've read a book about drawing flowers in pencil as well, but I need to get the tools of the trade to achieve certain effects.I finally finished sharpening all 132 colored pencils in my Prismacolor Premier set. I even went ahead and organized them by color group. Using them is another story. I'm thinking of ways to use them. Perhaps I can use them for coloring books to practice my blending, or apply them to the drawing techniques from the flower drawing book.I have a few pages filled of my sketchbook, some color sketches, others are just pencil sketches I've done with a mechanical pencil. My brother told me that mechanical pencils are the best for sketching. I trie...
